Rep gave Jordan a slightly exasperated look, but it was softened by playfulness. "Aye well they don't get used on much else, no much to think about on this ******** island. It's no exactly mastermind."

He inclined a brow at the other man. "I guess the 90s mibbie. It's no my fault the other decades have all been shitty and boring. Things were ******** better when I was a wee boy, everything was more edgy and pure hilarious when I was out with my mates, in our berghaus jackets and s**t like that man. Here I cannae even get good fancy s**t to wear cause it gets ruined." he waved a hand. "I spend half my time just cleaning and repairing my ******** uniform coat." Jordan was one of the few people on the island he would even admit that he made any attempt at all to maintain his coat, seeing it as a way of making an impression as much as a practical part of his wardrobe.

The glass got pilfered immediately and the drink downed.

"A house?" he said. "Sounds cool. I wanted a house like, I wanted to be a part of towns. I just like, after America went away like, what's the point? I'd just ******** bring s**t down, you know? I want it to be good. I have the bar and that's enough I guess. I think you'd make it nicer."

"One of these days you're going to run out," and Jordan took the glass back, taking the remaining few drops of liquor. "We all are. Guess it won't make that much different, for most."

"I made some pretty dubious fashion choices in the 90s. In my defense, though, most kids make dubious fashion choices." He leaned on his elbows on the table and quirked a smile. "It's a good thing the coats are well made, as much abuse as we put them through."

He swirled the ice in the glass, watching and listening to it clink against the sides. "Just wanted some more space, and it'd be a good project to keep busy with, you know? I don't know where yet or anything." A small shrug. "If enough of us build something, maybe we can get something rolling, something else to do besides inter-division sniping. Also, less muffled yelling through the walls after midnight." He didn't sound entirely convinced, perhaps talking himself into it as much as explaining his motives.

"I liked the fashion in the 90s." Rep said earnestly. "There was a lot of s**t I really wanted but couldn't have because all I wore was like, second hand s**t. Old out of date football strips from years before and stuff. I can wear what I want now so I kind of do I guess" he smirked. "And aye, I've learned more than I'd ever ******** admit about repairing coats from this shithole."

"I think the best like, thing I could do all in all for a community, would be to stay out of it, if I've learned anything in my time here. The bar is ok, but I don't know about much else."

"Making up for lost time," Jordan nodded. "I got more secondhand stuff after we went to live with my aunt. I was old enough to pick my own then, though." He half-shrugged. "I liked those layered hooded shirts and s**t."

"The bar's a good thing. I think pretty much everyone's here once in a while, at least," he said. He didn't have much of an argument for the rest of it; Rep tended to be aggressive and stir things up, and to ignore or deny the negative consequences those traits reaped would be willfully ignorant and would insult Rep's intelligence. Sometimes Jordan thought that the disagreements and outright fights Rep caused must satisfy some hidden need for his - not his lover any more, he had no more right to that title, and wishing things had worked out otherwise was both selfish and unreasonable, after he'd so thoroughly failed to earn it. Friend; they were still friends. "That's a contribution in itself."

His glass was empty. He looked out across the bar to catch the eye of the kid who was doing serving tonight. At some point, he realized, he'd started thinking of trainees as kids, even though some of them weren't that much younger at all.

"We used to get most of my clothes out of a place called the Briggait where people'd just sell second or third hand clothes, all of which smelled like ******** dampness. Sometimes the clyde salvage too. Meant nothing ever really ******** fitted. Maybe its why I don't care all that much about clothes now, it doesn't need to look good, it just needs to fit and keep me from being cold or ******** naked." he sighed. "I'm no rich enough to wear whatever I want." and the not female enough went unsaid.

Rep was quietly hurt by Jordan agreeing with him, it was a valid agreement really but in his core he had been wanting to hear some sort of reason why he should go ahead with a house anyway, that he was as valid as anyone else. Apparently even Jordan agreed with the others that the main thing he had to offer was booze. It wasn't unexpected and he'd asked for it but it hurt all the same. He didn't mention that he wanted to have a house, for the first time in his life to feel like he was a normal person and a part of society, he just shut the thought down and put it back on the shelf. "Aye." he said. "Everybody needs a place to escape to."

But something of the enthusiasm in him had gone out of him.

"Thought you liked being naked," Jordan said, quirking a small smile.

"Where would you build something, if you were going to build something?" he asked. It was mostly just an extension of the conversation. It hadn't really occurred to him before that Rep might want to have a place separate from the bar, not when there was some living space in the building; he'd meant to offer the idea, had expected it to be a surprise. "Around here, or somewhere else, to get a break from it?"

Maybe the hoard was Rep's escape, still, he thought, and looked away. He had never felt welcome there anyway.

"Around people I trust, sure, around people like the bitches on this island I want a lot of ******** layers between us." He didn't elaborate about why he went shirtless so often or what it was meant to prove.

"Nowhere." he said grimly, clearly having shut down on the whole idea of a house or of having any additional places to go. "The bar is fine."

"Oh, I see," Jordan said. "Can't have too many wandering eyes, that makes sense."

He looked silently at Rep for a long moment. "You wouldn't ever have wanted ... ?" There was a strange look in his eyes, a kind of tired disappointment. He had given the idea up, but the thought that it had been impossible to begin with was still depressing.

"It doesn't matter what I want." he said. "It matters what other people want and other people don't want me around." Besides he told himself, if he had a house at some point someone somewhere would try to take his hoard away, he wasn't allowed to have too many good things at any one time, someone would always in the end try to steal it away to spite him.

"It just doesn't matter what I want at all."

"It matters what you want," Jordan answered, quiet and serious. "It matters."

Rep snorted. "It disnae really. If I had my way I'd be part of it all, I'd be part of a town that was like a real ******** town. Like the ******** world I was never a part of. I never owned a house, I never settled down, I never did anything, it was always someone else's s**t. I hold onto my own s**t as best I can and that's all I can do."

He stood up. "It's no something I can have here either. With America I was like maybe, maybe it'll happen, but then that selfish ******** Taym came along and it wasn't about the ******** island anymore. It was about him. And now he's dead and so are her ******** dreams and so are the towns."

PostPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2016 2:11 pm

"I'm still going to look for a house," Jordan said, with a small sigh. "Even if she's not pushing to get a community started any more. Guess we're a bunch of antisocial people." He didn't comment on Taym; he'd held a lasting and bitter dislike for the man by the end, but he had sympathy for America, for the depth of her loss and the ragged edges of her emotions. He wasn't at all sure he'd do any better, given a similar situation.

He lifted a hand as Rep stood, reaching to brush his arm but not to hold him back. "Hey," he said. I miss you, I wanted, I want. I can't give it to you. Don't go. Don't give up. "Thanks," he said instead, not entirely sure what he was saying it for, but meaning it anyway.

"Good." Rep said. "You'd make a community nicer I'm sure, you are the kind of person a town could really use." And he did support the town becoming what it could be, somewhere safe and warm and a support system for people to come back to. He just knew fine well that sort of community didn't need him. He didn't even need to try half the time to destroy people's fledgeling dreams, capable of drawing shame out of even the most innocent of aspirations. Jordan was the opposite, he was agreeable and reasonable and encouraged people to do what they wanted to do in a sensible way. He was a better person without Rep looming over his shoulder, and a freer person. Even Rep knew that.

The contact made him pause, a deep twist of emotion and longing which stopped him in his tracks. It couldn't work and it hadn't worked but that didn't change anything about how he felt. He wanted to see Jordan be what he could be, without desperate broken claws pulling him down every time he tried to climb up.

"It's nae bother." he said with a vague sort of hand wave.

Jordan didn't try further to stop Rep from leaving; the conversation was stilted, too full of all the things they were avoiding and too awkward. Maybe it had been a mistake to come down to the bar tonight. He didn't really feel like being drunk tonight, he decided, and got up also, turning toward the door. "I'll see you later, then," he said. He wouldn't avoid the bar forever, but maybe for a while longer. Just until it wasn't so raw, just until it didn't hurt so much to see them.
