(That's not how it works, he wants to argue, it begins with the rattle of bars and a raspy voice and coarse sand in his mouth and then the gradual heat overtaking him again—) (Don't be a downer on your ******** wedding night.)

"Let's not," he said, trying to force those thoughts away. "Sorry. You gonna sleep in that dress?" Because he certainly wasn't wrinkling his suit, and he began to undo the buttons.

"Yeah who cares?" she said with a yawn. If he'd moved she hadn't noticed, only falling back to the pillow and resettling.

She really was tired, despite her efforts to keep the conversation going for him. "S'the only time I'll wear it anyways." A wedding dress wasn't exactly like a suit after all; she couldn't wear it another time without getting many odd looks.

"Just curious, Mrs. Hawthorn." He smiled to himself as he slipped the jacket off and stripped his layers until it was just the boxers and socks, at which point he forced himself to roll towards the cabinet to grab a different shirt. Luckily for Chel, he had already gotten his photo bonanza finished during the party, so she wouldn't be bothered by the sound of snaps.

"We did good," Jack announced as he flopped on the bed, as if that wasn't obvious yet. Jokingly he added, "Mission complete. I'll make sure to say in the report that you were amazing out there."

"Not yet, love," she told him, adding a new pet name without meaning to. There was, in fact, consummating the marriage. That was going to have to wait until she could do more than mumble into a pillow though.

"Is Mrs. Hawthorn the new babe?"

"Mm..." The beginnings of a lazy grin were seen. "You want it to be?"

"Chel's good," she told him, the same as when anyone asked what she preferred to be called. She knew he wouldn't stick to it, but it was her response regardless.

With a kiss to punctuate, he replied, "Chel's perfect."

"Gross."

---

It was not often that Chel got the opportunity to say sunlight streaming through a window was what woke her up. It was still early certainly but one of the few luxuries a hunter could get was the right to sleep in.

Even better to say sleeping in with her husband. Chel didn't open her eyes (if you wake up, will it be a dream?) but ran her hands down his back. It was the same as it had been on many mornings and that was what mattered to her. Stability, the reassurance he would be there.

Jack stirred slowly, having been dead asleep up until then; Hunter instincts to get up for in cases of were hard to shake off, even after an eventful day and night. He relaxed again and exhaled loud enough through his nose to signal he was awake without opening his eyes. Over them was a patchwork of her dress and the blankets, comfortable and warm.

Blindly he made sure his arm was over her body before tucking it in and making a noise under his breath that sounded suspiciously like a whiny not now before he turned his head away from the sun.

Chel let out a breathy laugh, quiet and personal. It had taken her a moment to register that this was not just a normal morning; this was a day off and their honeymoon.

And if you didn't think Chel was going to start it with a literal bang, you were wrong. In a bit they had an entire days worth of stuff to do, as she'd planned it out, but right now was spontaneous and belonged to them. So she left him close his eyes again but her hands wandered and trailed from his back to his sides. Not urgent or forcing, but the opposite; loving and gentle. Thumbs pressed into his sides and she put a kiss on his collarbone with eyelashes tracing along his skin. Good morning.

It still hadn't quite hit him what today was supposed to be, but even if it had, it probably wouldn't have been enough to make Jack forsake staying cozy in bed a little longer. Still, the affectionate attention wasn't blotting out the sun, so he temporarily let her go to grope for the sheets to tug over them before sliding his hand up her spine again, idly scratching the back of her neck. Jack had an unfortunate issue of having trouble going back to sleep once he had awoken, but damn it if he wouldn't keep his eyes closed for as long as possible anyway.

The kisses continued slowly along his neck, lips pressing in small motions along his arterial vein. It somehow made it more special that she could take her time appreciating him; not just a hurried, passionate mess like usual, but something more intimate, quiet. Tame, even.

She put her head on the pillow beside him and opened her eyes to see him. Still stubborn; knit eyebrows and pure refusal. Her lover, her soulmate (at least, she thought so despite any alternate universe or dream vision she could be shown. Maybe not despite, but because of. Like she had something to prove; one more act of rebellion against things that were out of her hands). She ran one hand to the back of his head and scratched lightly, pushing his cheek against the palm of her hand for him to lean into if he wanted.

Even in his stupor it was hard not to take notice. One of the most private hunters alive offered his neck willingly, sleepily tilting his chin up with a murmur of approval. He managed to pull one eye open, unfocused and full of shadows until definition and meaning returned, and a lopsided smile began to form. There was something childishly charming about them just hiding under some blankets from the light.

"Buttering me up for something?" Jack asked. Not that he was stingy about it, as he leaned into her magic fingers as usual.

Truth be told, Chel didn't like small spaces. (Bathroom floors and quarantines and pillows pulled over her head). She wasn't afraid here though, under a veil not unlike one she would have worn if they'd had the time or money. Not when she was surrounded by such a flurry of pride and adoration.

"Depends f'it's workin'," she murmured as her thumb stroked along the arch of his ear.

"Hmm..." He feigned consideration as he pulled her closer. (Read: half scooted himself.) "Not sure just yet," he reported back. "Lemme just..."

Being half asleep didn't allow for much room to be clever, but he tried. Jack pressed a slow, warm kiss to her, not looking to instigate but to share in a lazy morning between just the two of them while it lasted. (Or afternoon. Who knew right now?)

"Mmmmmight be working~"
