Delilah gave a soft whinny, shifting a little as her hooves clomped on the ground, hay underneath rustling and sliding. She seemed unconcerned with the fact that someone was petting her, and instead just lowered her head in a docile manner over the stable door.
Basil was rummaging around in a bag and was now pulling out a handful of carrots.
"They don't mind the stables," he said, separating them. "They prefer the outdoors, where it's much more open, but we keep them in stables when it gets dark out so nothing tries to attack them, or whatever. Wolves and wild dogs, you know."
He offered Sergei a carrot.
"She'll like it, it's okay."

Sergei took the carrot but he was so enamored all of the sudden with the mare, that he kept petting her.
Like Basil had said, She was gentle and he didn't seem scared. But curious.
"Do I just..." He held it out for her and she nibbled all the way down his hand till the carrot was gone. She left a bit of drool which was fine and he wiped his hand off.
"How long have had horses?" He looked at Basil, "Do they always like treats?"

The horse seemed perfectly content to allow Sergei to continue stroking her. She stood demurely in her stall and gave a whinny every so often, her long mane needing brushing, but Basil would get to that eventually. Right now, he was just curious about this man and his dog.
"See?" he said with a nod. "Not that bad."
He shifted from one foot to the other. "A long time; since I was a kid. But it's been a while. And yes, they do; horses are really easy to placate with food and snacks, they love to eat."
Basil gave a nod to Sergei's dog.
"How long have you had her?"

Sergei's continous pet of the horse happened as the conversation turned back to him and he nodded.
"Just much bigger dogs. Smarter dogs." He added, in case the horse would be offended. Noel certainly didn't seem to be.
Once attention was give to her though, she walked closer to the pair of men and leaned on her master.
"Just a couple of months." Sergei reached down with his free hand to pat her. "Rescue from pound, they thought to..." He snorted through his nose, "Dispose of her because no one adopt. So I adopt."

"Well," said Basil, "That's one way of putting it, yes. Larger and smarter dogs. Though dogs are pretty smart as well," he added politely, with a glance down at Sergei's dog. She wagged her tail at him and he reached down, patting her head a after Sergei had.
"Well, she's beautiful," Basil offered. "I'm glad you got her, that's why I have Pasha as well. They thought she was lame, I got her as a filly."

"You are good man." Sergei noted and then looked at the watch on wrist. "Ah, Basil. We will...Can we come back?" He fumbled around in his pockets before pulling a note pad out.
"This is my number. If okay, I will bring Noel and we can learn more about you and your mare?" He smiled a bit. "And perhaps, riding lessons? Vill think of good trade vhy I wait?"

He gave a nod, though really, privately, Basil was concerned that Sergei's idea of a good man was someone with a large doghorse. But he accepted the number nonetheless, glancing down at the paper in his hand.
"Yes, that's a good idea. I wouldn't mind teaching you at all," he said, sticking the paper in his pocket and then holding out his hand.
"It was a pleasure to meet you, Sergei."
