Merope paid again, taking place next to Em as he stared in dismay at the plate before him. "It starts like that," he began, "But then --" he reached out and snatched the first piece on his plate, shoving it into his mouth and chewing it before he could think otherwise. "One down. Are you ready for the next?" The reaper behind the bar spoke up. Merope flashed him a quick grin. "I figure my mouth's already burning, so it's unlikely I'll set it on fire again yeah?" In a moment the undead twitched, then writhed as the heat kicked in. He managed to fall off his stool backwards in a spectacular fashion as he flailed on the snow, shoveling another handful of the stuff into his mouth. "Ah --" he began as he stood up. "I was wrong. It is possible to set it on fire again." Piece: 1 Endurance: 13/17

"After!" Em promised about the other sushi. "Burning first." Because it was a challenge, and because it had put Merope on the ground in snow-eating agony (she was quite proud to actually know what snow was now!). It wasn't until Merope paid for his that Em even thought to do the same, and she paused in her endurance test just long enough to count out the seeds necessary for self-inflicted challenge-pain.
"I think I see smoke." She joked, grinning as Merope shoved more snow into his mouth. When it came time for her second piece, she shoved it into her mouth as quickly as the first one, still doing her best to not chew.
Some of the spices still managed to catch on her tongue on the way down, and she let out a hiss of discomfort, not yet in enough pain to start chomping on snow.
"It's....good...." She whined, opening her mouth to fan her tongue.

Merope blanched at the mention of smoke. "Eeugh. I'd have preferred steam," he added with a whine, "Smoke stinks and comes from things that burn. Like my throat." "I said steam." Em stared at him, blinking behind her dark goggles. Wasn't that what she said to begin with? While she continued to stare at him, she ate another piece without batting an eye (or a fin, really.)
"Can we have water?" She asked Shun next, for no reason at all.

Merope shrugged, shoveling the next piece into his mouth. "Why water?" He asked between bites, "There's a lot of sn-oh. Right." He swallowed the piece of sushi, glancing around the booth. "Riiight I kind of. Ate a majority of the snow already. Sorry 'bout that." He suddenly began to shake and shiver, reaching down to snatch a handful of snow to shove down his gullet. Shun just sort of stared at the masochistic duo, watching them eat spicy piece after spicy piece. "You do realize water typically makes the spice worse, right?" he replied. He did suppose he could offer milk or something along those lines. That almost felt like cheating, however. Perhaps it could be offered after a challenge attempt, rather than during. He considered his options.

"It's okay." Em nodded a single nod after also taking a look down at the clear patch of ground around them. With his next mouthful of snow, the ground became a little more visible, which was something rather fascinating to her. Up until Merope attempted whale again, which had her head snapping up to stare at him, an awkward little grin on her face.
"Better! Much better." She pat his shoulder, tapping lightly and lazily.
"...Wait what?" Water made the spices worse? How could water make anything worse?! Water was the best! "That sounds wrong." The Mermaid stared at him almost stupidly for a time or two, before slowly turning her head to look back at Merope. "Maybe you should stop?" She suggested, though she didn't quite sound terribly convinced. Perhaps this grumpy looking Reaper was lying?

Mahlan was strolling around the booths since the game itself hasn't begun yet. She looked while wading around the crowd of boils that.... "Fngh!" She sneezed without even trying to hold back, causing the sap globules sticking on her skin, frozen from the temperature to be flung like catapulted rocks. After a bit of apologizing to the victims of her...shots, the plant spirit continued to walk around... ...uh, why's these boils eating snow? Don't they know that eating snow can get them stomachaches...Mahlan looked at the stall ripe with...boils with strangely red faces and enlarged lips. She looked at the brightly-colored announcement on the wall: Crazy 8 challenge, win a 50-silverseed gift card. The entry fee's 5 seeds. Should she try this one? A plant spirit's tongue's kinda...numb, anyway. She can try excreting more sap than usual too. "I wanna challenge the menu!" Mahlan said, pulling out her seedpouch and putting 5 seeds at the register. Soon, one Reaper gave her what looks like...pain in physical object. Why the heck are the sushi all emitting red aura. Heck, there's no way to back up. Since eating them one-by-one will only prolong her...guaranteed pain, Mahlan compressed all the sushis into one huge ball (well this is kinda...no, it's outright bad manners) and ate it in frenzy! The first bite encompasses the mass from 2 sushis, and she can feel something's burning her mouth from within. On the second bite she consumed a 3 pieces' worth, and the sap began to flow freely from her eyes...izzat tears? No, it's sweat obviously! The third bite causes all pores on her face to open and a thick mask of sap oozes. Mahlan proceeds to ate the balled sushis without pausing, not giving enough time for the taste to be registered...she chomped the last bite and gulped down! She managed to finish them all! She won- *fade to black* "...what...?" And she found herself waking on the nurse's office. The nurse said that she got severe indigestion from eating and shock from the spices being too hot for her stomach to handle. Aw. sweatdrop Spicy Endurance Endurance = 17-(17) = 0 LOL

"If water makes it worse, then what stops the burning?" Merope asked Shun, his head tilted to one side as he stared at the reaper. "I mean, you throw water on fire right? And burning comes from fire, so it should work... I mean, it still kind of burns here," he tapped his throat for emphasis, "But I'm starting to get used to it. It's really weird, being able to, to, I guess feel it?" Merope shrugged, then warily picked up the next piece of sushi. "I've come this far," he told Em, I don't think I can back down now." "That particular heat does not come from fire. But an oil. And well... water does nothing to oil."Shun gave a shrug as he watched Merope eat in agony. "Scream based products help alleviate it."

There was something important to reading menus and directions and thinking before stuffing six pieces of sushi into your mouth. Something.. Magda could not quite put her finger on at that moment.. She started strong, popping them like candy and squealing every time the spice burned her tongue and made her eyes water. She took her eyephone out around piece 4, and stuck her tongue out to take a picture (she saw red, even if it wasn't really there). She sent it off to Malik with the words I'm burning, send the fire department! and immediately popped in another piece. At least they were tasty. Or they were.. when Magda could taste them. By piece six, she'd lost that ability, as well as the ability to continue eating. Five seeds, lost forever! She smiled at the host, handed back the unfinished sushi, and then promptly passed out on the ground. opticpeach just bc she sent him a selfie

Em watched the exchange between Merope and Shun like she would a tennis match. Her deep sea friend had a great point, but it seemed the Reaper had a reason for it. She hummed, her voice thrumming thoughtfully in her throat, before the sudden thud of Merope's fist on the table started her out of her thoughts.
"You are a treasure." She complimented Merope's ability to withstand this challenge - especially since he had only done it a second time around for her. Before she ate her fifth piece, she looked back towards Shun. "Do you have any of those?" She asked, meaning the scream based products.
Though as she bit into her fifth piece, and the burning oils not only got on her tongue, but ended up between her teeth and cheeks, her eyes started to water behind her goggles.
"Mrrrraahhhhhh" She hissed uncomfortably, rolling her tongue out of her mouth with more uncomfortably, vaguely whale-like noises.

If he had any common sense, he would have waited for Shun's reaction before popping the fifth piece into his mouth. Since he didn't have any of that sensibility, it was crammed into his mouth and chewed. "I think," he announced, "My taste buds and throat have been killed a third time." "Is this what death feels like?" Em whined, her words thick and garbled as she tried to talk with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. The sympathetic pat only made her whine louder, and she licked her own arm, as if that would transfer some of the burning oils onto something else instead. Obviously, it didn't work.
"Why do landers do this?!" She demanded in misery, shaking her arm as that too began to burn.

Merope's eyes went wide as he watched Em lick her arm. "Did that help?" He asked eagerly. He was about to try it himself until Em's reaction suggested otherwise. His fins drooped as he idly poked the last three sushi on his plate. "I... I dunno why creeple would do this," Merope admitted, shivering. "All I know is that I'm not looking forward to trying to finish this, but --" He shrugged, snatching a piece up and shoving it into his mouth. In his haste he missed, hurriedly peeling the rice and fish from his face to properly cram it into his mouth. "Can't sink a ship just sittin' here y'know?" He announced between mouthfuls of sushi.
