The next time he looked over his shoulder he watched as a giant hammer swung down and sent the girl flying a feet from where she'd been standing when she set off the trap. He swore under his breath as he backtracked again; it was instinct at this point, to never leave a person behind. His coach drilled it into him that they lived and breathed as one body, played as one body, bled as one body. He was part of a "team" now, a huge one--an organization, really--and Shu was part of that team, so.
He wasn't about to forge ahead and knowingly leave her on her own.
Rhys raced to her unconscious body and scooped her up easily, then hurried back down the steps. As he'd done the last time. Zephira was out and being brandished against the shadows that tried to get at them again, until finally he pushed past one final wave and back out the doors of the Miss Taken Tower.
Carefully he set her down and collapsed beside her, breathing heavy as he desummoned his weapon. She was nagging the whole time, but he didn't care. They could try again another time...
"You okay?" he asked after some time passed. He wasn't sure if she was awake yet, but he didn't bother to look. If she was then he would get a reply, if she wasn't then he wouldn't. Simple, and he didn't need to move at all.

It was rather dizzy after being hit that hard, if not the bonding with Z, she guessed she might have some of the ribs broken. "I'm okay," pressing against her head, she sat up with Rhys's assistance. "Sorry for the trouble, I didn't expect it to be like this. I guess.....I'm not in my best performance today, Milo would be much better than me." Shu looked at the hunter with an apologizing smile and lowered her head, hands squeezing the fabric of her clothes. "We'll have to try again next time." She paused, feeling the awkwardness and opened her mouth to clear the dead air. "The death training course is much more deadly than this, thus we're asked to do it in golems instead. There are arrow shower, sharp pendulum, laser, bomb, sharp pointy needle mountain etc." She nervously laughed, "I better train my stamina and swinging Z in small narrow area." She gave Rhys a glance, "How do you find this place, Rhys?"

It was indeed still hard to believe that getting hit that hard by something that large didn't result in more serious injuries, though it was probably something he ought to be grateful for considering he'd be using this training course (along with all the others) quite often in the weeks and months and maybe even years to come. Once Shu was up on her own Rhys fell back onto his elbows, relaxing some after the grueling attempt through the tower.
"Definitely," was his simple reply, and he waved off her apology and comment about Milo. People had s**t days; he understood at least that much. He wasn't too thrilled about it, but he did understand.
As she listed the obstacle in the Death training course the more right it sounded, name-wise, and he groaned and let his head fall back, a 'tsk' sound coming from him a few moments later. They really weren't going easy on them, he thought. He heard Zephira snort but ignored her as best he could. A question popped up about golems when she mentioned them that demanded more of his attention, but he pocketed it for now and sat up properly to answer her question initially with a shrug.
"Tough," he then said flatly. "Like a ********' bootcamp, except maybe a thousand times harder and with s**t-ton of paperwork." He recalled the conversation he had with Leslie in that cramped pod and scowled. "Least that's what I've heard. Is it true?"

She simply wished the fact that their bodies were altered by the bonding didn't startle Rhys, sometimes it was easy to forgot they are different from normal humans. The cute band-aid she brought was useless, initially it was difficult to get used to seeing the wounds closed up like fast forward movie, she couldn't adjust her mind to catch up with the lingering pain. Like every hunter, Shu believed he would accustom to it, those changes on his body and what he would have to face in the future. Maybe failing the tower wasn't that bad, she thought, she can set an example. "It's not hard to understand why they insist on we have to make use of golem, right?" She smiled. Those training courses prepared them to face stronger enemies, let their bodies memorize how they should deal with dangers. She recalled that promotion mission and many class A missions that she almost at the cliff and involuntarily twitched. She wished he was strong enough for what was going to be on his shoulder, those nightmares, those critical moments he would be so close to death and might be facing someone die in front of him. Waving off the melancholic thoughts clouding her mind, she cracked a laugh. "After all, it's a job with salary. With the power given to us comes a responsibility, Mist isn't the division getting the largest amount of paperwork though. It's a rather free division, you play sports right? It's like role of Libero in many ball games, you go wherever need you." She listed an example, mostly heard from her sister who loved sports, she was a little admirer of her. "By the way, have any Mist taken you under their wings?" The petite girl asked, leaned back for a more comfortable pose. Path would be much easier if you were lucky enough to grab a mentor to guide you. Depends on the luck one has, they could get a mean grumpy one or a sweet helpful senpai.

He shook his head. No, it wasn't hard at all to understand why they were given golems to use for training purposes, especially considering what was being done during said training sessions. If it meant survival when the real deal came, though, he would take his beatings. He was strong enough to take it, at least in practice. Far as he could tell, if dying was involved, then only time would tell if he could handle what was really in store for him on this island.
His ears perked at mention of salary, and he smiled the smallest of smiles. "Salary, huh?" he asked, leaning forward and resting his arms on his knees. "Do we all get the same rate or is there a raise as we go up the ranks?" It was hard to believe he was getting paid to do half the things he was doing, but he wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. He was legitimately making a living, then, and for the first time in a while he felt himself kind of swell up with a sense of pride. The pride of being employed, which was small, sure, but it was something.
Certainly better than nothing, right? And his smile only widened when she said that Mist was the one given the least paperwork between the divisions.
Her next question had him shake his head again, though by now he was certainly more relaxed and relieved than he had been earlier. "Nope, none so far," he replied as he gave her an inquiring look. "Why, should I find someone? Is it a requirement or something?"

Shu wasn't surprised his reaction when she mentioned salary, but it was still amusing to see him lean forward and be more attentive. "Yes, salary. As I told you, Deus is akin to a military institution, so when the soldiers could get paid, so we do." That Shu believed the organization was still kind enough to give her a second home, a second chance. "That latter," she giggled, "as you move up along the rank comes more work and more dangerous missions that you might be backed into a corner - In short, the amount of salary indicates how much work you're taking care of. If you need money for a month, you might also request more work, like how part-time works." "Hmph," The petite girl nodded at his reply, Rhys missed the division meeting earlier. It was the best chance to know about the leader and his crew as well as hunters from the same division. "It's not required but recommended. Your weapon would help you, but your seniors who stayed in the division for a longer time will provide you with valuable experiences and wisdom." She fiddled with her shirt before she continued. "Even in the division meeting, the leader would encourage that. For instance, I learned a lot of techniques about wielding a hammer from a Sun hunter, I went to external mission with a former Death hunter." As she talked about the senior hunters, her eyes widened with admiration. "In game language, if you obtain good mentor, your exp will be doubled! A status effect added to all aspects of your stats." She reached out and gestured a "two" at Rhys, reflecting she was into games. She leaned back and raised her head at the sky, people said the island was used to surround by thick dense fog. It was hard to imagine when all she saw was a full canvas of blueness. "Of course, if you believe and you're confident in yourself, you can leave that out." She crossed her hands and stretched, the migraine became lighter in the rest. "But it's still suggested that when you do external missions or tasks, it's the best you at least go in two." "How're you and your partner? Do you two get along?" Lowering her head to look at him with a relaxed smile, Shu asked. He was the first one she woke up, of course she would take good care of him. < Or the other way round.> She knew she probably didn't leave a very good impression but she didn't appreciate Z's harmless mocking.

It was a little hard to take all the information in, but he did his best. It'd benefit him, anyway, and at some point he'd have to know all of it so better sooner rather than later. Rhys was more than relaxed by then as he nodded along, and by the end of her spiel about mentors he was a little surprised to note her gamer language. It was only vaguely familiar to him; he didn't have the luxury, and he didn't care for sitting on his a** for too many hours of the day, anyway. Still, he'd played his fair share before and he kind of understood what she meant.
"Got it," he said with a nod as he tried to mentally bullet her key points for future reference. He doubted it'd be possible, but at least he tried. He didn't exactly want to go and die right away, so maybe a mentor might be a good idea. Not that he said anything to that effect, he simply nodded along until she asked him another question.
"Me and Zeph?" he asked first, not sure how he wanted to answer. Honesty wasn't his best trait but he didn't really have anything to hide, either, so he continued after a beat. "She's got a mouth on her and we get into it sometimes, but we do okay. Better since the first day, anyway."
He nodded back toward her. "How 'bout you and your partner?"

Luxury, maybe? Despite her pitiful childhood, Shu tried her best to live to its fullest. Her childhood couldn't be said happy, if not her siblings were so supportive. The petite girl had tried to overwrite her sadness with happy memories thus she gave herself many entertainments, games and cosplay were a few of her favourites. Shu wondered how much he was able to get from her swift words, but she was going to say more if he didn't have any questions to ask her back. "That's not bad," she said genuinely. "One hunter told me it takes some times for both him and his partner to polish each other's edges." The girl smiled as her partner was being asked while the beast snorted and warned Shu not to tell too much. "Z and me? He growls at me a lot but he also gives me a lot of advice and calm me down in crisis. He's a mythical beast in Chinese mythology, so we talked in Chinese sometimes. It eases my home sickness, what was Zeph?" _ p a o cx Shu asked about what Zeph was in the past, do you wanna add the reply to that? :3

At least he didn't have it wrong when he decided that time was probably the more important aspect when it came to coming to an understanding with your new partner. He didn't let his relief show too much this time, reflecting it in only a nod before he stopped bobbing his head to listen to her answer to his question.
"Sounds a little like Zeph," he said with a smirk when she was done. "She nags all the damn time, and sometimes I have to beg her to shut up."
A groan escaped him as Zephira's voice filled his mind, and he dropped his head. "Like...right...now..." he sighed. He really didn't have too many quiet moments anymore, and it wasn't too unlike his time back with his Anne except he could at least escape from her. Zephira was almost always with him, and there was next to nothing he could do about it.
He found it a little curious that Shu and her weapon had another language in common, something common to bond over...which was good. Her question got only a gently shake of his head. "She hasn't shared that much with me, but I'm guessing something with a feather?" A hand went to the feather on his necklace, extending it only slightly to show her. "She doesn't actually talk about herself that much."

"Beg her to shut up....that sounds so much like Z." She stifled her titters, recalling when Z roared at her, Zeph would be nagging Rhys. It would be such a funny scene if drawn in chibi style. She enjoyed doodling in her little journal sometimes. She was surprised how much Zeph was hiding from Rhys while they were tied in the same chain. Shu guessed maybe his weapon had thought about it too simple like even Rhys died, she would wait for another hunter. Yet, thing didn't go that easy. When a hunter died, it's most likely the weapon would die. It was one of the reasons why Z growled at her stupid moves all the time, because they were two ants tied on the same rope, one drops into water, another might be pulled in as well. "Hmm," she frowned and tilted her head. "It's better if you two get closer, it will strengthen your bonding but you still have time. Getting some spars to start with would be good for developing chemistry."

He tried not to think about it all that much, if he were being honest; about his and Zephira's current "partnership" of sorts. Partly because none of his thoughts were ever truly his own anymore, but also because everything was still so new, so fresh. He hadn't had enough time to process everything, to get himself completely settled and at home. Or...well, as at home as he was gonna get here. Her suggestion did get a little nod out of him, and his gaze dropped to the necklace.
"Yeah," he sighed, "we'll be workin' on it, probably. Got time, provided I don't die sometime later today." A quick glance up with the grin that split his expression should have conveyed that his words were made in jest, though he knew that the threat of danger was very real. Probably real enough that he shouldn't be joking about it, but right then? Right there?
It didn't seem like anything was gonna kill him, so why not?

Didn't seem to notice his joke, the hunter nodded. "Hmm, it seems rather peaceful lately. I guess no need to sorry that much, make some friends and chill to prepare yourself. Netflix and chill, they love to say. Though internet isn't quite possible but Mr. Dwight has a lot of movies, you can find friends to watch some with." They'd better lived their lives to the fullest before they perish and reduced the unnecessary stresses accumulated from missions. Netflix and chill, huh? Not a bad plan, though he would have to meet this Mr. Dwight and make some friends before he'd be able to take advantage of the plan she was offering. "Sounds like a good idea," he started to say though, since it was. "I'm still picking things up as I go, skills-wise, so maybe I can do the whole 'Netflix and chill' thing after I get the hang of a few more things."
Rhys cleared his throat and shot his eyes up to the sky, wondering briefly what else he had to do later on in the day before his gaze returned to Shu. "I work out," he said simply, "or free run, or skate. Something that keeps me moving without the risk of death, I guess?" There was a hint of a smile in his tone. It really did, staying with others helped her to drive the loneliness away. She was quite independent, but if she was given the choice, she won't hesitate to cling to someone all the time. Shu enjoyed the feeling when she's with someone she likes, the affection and emotions induced were essential to her. She knew she wasn't normal and something was going wrong, thus she tried to live every single day awaiting. Eyes closed and opened and a new day started, every morning when she opened her eyes to the dim low ceiling, she was glad but helpless. Day after day and month after month, she acted like a cheerful person. When Rhys asked his question, Shu noticed her thought strayed away too far. Not the first time, she sighed internally. "Eating," a simple and direct answer out her parted smiling lips. She raised a finger, "Isn't there a saying sugar helps alleviating pressure? I like eating cakes, desserts or candies when I feel down or sad. Wailing helps too, can only do it in room alone though." Her eyes squished thinner into curves, "I can imagine it, throwing everything behind the wind when you run." Closing her eyes, she envisioned a breeze sweeping across her face, bringing her dark hair up in the air. _ p a o cx It's fine, you're the only one that would reply me now anyway /hugs
