Greta looked at the two answers and sat there, staring at the paper. She wasn't sure which she would choose. Both ended in death, one before the other.
Quote:
Greta: I would stay alive and try to get myself as far away from other people as possible so that when I turn, assuming that I would turn, I have to travel farther to hurt the people I've been working to keep alive.
She passed the papers on. It wasn't that she had any particular sentiments for any of them other than Monica and Corgi, but she had always tried to do more good than harm.

At least they all seemed more or less to have thought about the problem which was probably a good thing, considering. Austin fidgeted a bit, rubbing at his throat [not quite at his jaw] as he wrote down the next question.
Quote:
5) What use do you personally think you have towards your faction?
And it took him a moment to mull over his reply.
Quote:
Austin: I'm smart, and I don't hesitate to take action.
It was kind of weird being the only one who had the ability to say anything. Wataru didn't like the quiet, because it meant that neither of the other two would miss anything he said. But damn - it looked like this Austin guy actually had some function that wasn't sitting around and telling people what the best shortcuts were.
Quote:
Wataru: i know the area. i don't know; i'm good with computers but there aren't a ton of those left.
He shrugged at the two of them and handed the papers over to Greta again.

Austin met Wataru's gaze with a bit of a squint and leaned forward to tap, meaningfully, at the line where he'd mentioned he was pre law, thank you very much.
Greta tapped at her throat, trying to keep her hands of her jaw. She usually wasn't prone to nervous motions, but she was also used to not having a lot of pain and having laundry to fold, vegetables to cut, wounds to bandage. She wrote down her answer quickly--this at least she knew.
Quote:
Greta: I used to work there so I know where things are. I'm good at keeping things running--the small but important things like clean clothes and food that won't make you sick.
She handed the papers over. It was interesting to learn what the other two thought their uses were--different than hers to be sure.

Austin didn't even read Greta's answer this time: he was getting tired of this, and the skeptical looks, and interacting with crazy people not from his area. So his handwriting deteriorated a bit as he wrote faster.
"Dude, pre-law does not always mean smart," said Wataru, rolling his eyes.
He leaned over to see Greta's new answer and the new question, wincing as he did so.
But he didn't have anything new to contribute. He just underlined Austin's answer, so that the paper looked like this:
Quote:
Austin: No. Wataru: ^

She could just manage a low cough that was meant to be a laugh before wincing in pain. Even she wasn't naive enough to believe in something as simple as rescue.

This was taking too long -- Austin was long tired of it, unsurprised to find he wasn't actually interested in either of these people in the slightest. He hadn't expected to be, but perhaps, perhaps, he could have been shocked, greeted with a great beauty or someone exceptionally charming.
He squinted at the pair of them and decided to move things along more quickly. His handwriting was starting to get scribbly, now, but at least it was still legible.
Quote:
7) What qualities do you think you bring forward if you had to lead? 8) What the major problem to surviving Day Zero? 9) Describe your family. 10) Describe yourself
He shook his head, just a touch, as he wrote in answers, passing each sheet along as he finished.
Quote:
Austin: I'm pretty sure the people leading are going to be taken down by mutiny at some point, so I'd rather not.
Austin: There might be nothing for us to survive into.
Austin: Inattentive, and probably dead.
Austin: Attractive, put together, capable.

"You don't pull your punches, huh," Wataru murmured, looking pensively over at the other dude. It was weird, and as hostile as Wataru himself was...
Yeah, okay. He didn't really want to spend time with either of these people. Greta seemed too reticent and it seemed pretty mutual in Austin's case. He made his handwriting smaller to compensate for Austin's scrawl but didn't do much to correct for the messiness, either.
Quote:
Wataru: I can delegate.
Wataru: dude, if there was something more than this we'd be out of here already. we've already survived; this is just the aftermath. and it's ******** shitty.
Wataru: my family's okay. i'm the first of three kids; got a mom and a dad. none of them are even in delta. i moved here after college.
Wataru: i'd say i'm angry but really good with a needle.
His hand was already hurting from writing these answers down so many times. Were they done yet?

Greta didn't really mind either way. She was here to be distracted after all, but she also didn't want to bother anyone.
She just wasn't capable of being friendly with a broken jaw. Of the two of them, she was the only one who didn't have variation in her handwriting. It went against her nature to be messy.
Quote:
Greta: I know what it's like to follow orders. I know what orders work and don't. Greta: We don't know if there's ever going to be anything other than surviving Day Zero and the days, months, years after. We don't know if this is all futile. Greta: They were kind. I never had any children and my parents are likely dead or on their way--the world is no longer kind to the elderly. Greta: I'm loyal, dutiful, and practical.

New line, written over and over until it was bold: LAST QUESTIONS
Quote:
11) Describe your weapon of choice 12) What is more important to you - knowledge or physical power and why? 13) You find the way out of the city but are heavily infected. Would you still leave? 14) If your best friend had the cure to the infection but it required heavily dissecting them would you do it? 15) Describe what you would do if you were rescued.
Austin drew in a slow breath as the questions were written, and rubbed a hand slowly up under the injury of his jaw, trying to lessen the dull ache away again. He needed an ice pack. If only they had access.
Quote:
Austin: I'd like a big heavy sword. I'm pretty sure anyone could manage that. Austin: In this world, physical, so I can live long enough for the other. Austin: Probably. Austin: I assume that they survive in the end, so yes. Austin: Tell someone off heavily.
He punctuated with an exaggerated finality and passed the papers along.
Wataru let out an audible sigh of relief when he saw the text on the top of the paper.
Quote:
Wataru: a pistol? i don't know; my hand's pretty steady. i don't wanna get close if i have the option to stay away
Wataru: knowledge in general. i'm never going to be powerful enough to really stand a chance against some of these assholes. better to know what to avoid
Wataru: tempted as i am to ******** everyone else over, i'm not that malicious.
Wataru: i don't have one. but stitches exist right?
Wataru: probably prepare better for next time. it's happened once. where would i be rescued to?
"Anyone else getting hand cramps?" he asked, not really expecting an answer.

Just looking at Austin made her jaw ache more so she just watched him, then Wataru, write. She shrugged at Wataru's question. If she could speak easily she would have said a little, but not enough to bother here. As it was, the best she could offer him was a shrug and to take the papers from him. These were the last questions and she wasn't really sure what anyone had gained from the three of them answering these questions.
Quote:
Greta: A gun, if I knew how to shoot one. I like to stay as far away as possible. But I don't know how to shoot one, so I guess I have to go with a knife. They're easy to carry and I'm fairly good at wielding one.
She knew she didn't look it but it was true. She shifted and felt the knife, wrapped up carefully, dig into her side. It wasn't comforting but it was there. It had saved her and Monica's life earlier so she was thankful.
Quote:
Greta: Knowledge. We're here because the bandits have knowledge of and access to a weapon that is better than anything the rest of us have. It didn't just arrive from the heavens; someone with knowledge had to have created it. If we can find a cure, or figure out how to get rid of them forever then we win--if that's considered winning.
She usually wasn't this forceful, but something about the pain and the situation made the words come in a way they hadn't before. Her handwriting remained even and neat, but her answers were different.
Quote:
Greta: I don't know. I would probably leave just to get away from the people that I care about. I wouldn't want to be the one to infect them. It wouldn't really be about getting out of the city, just staying away from it.
Greta: Yes. In the end--if they lived or died--there would be too much to gain. I would feel bad about it, but I like to think that I would have enough strength to do it.
Greta: I would just want to sleep in a soft, clean bed, in a room where there's real privacy or as close you can get while being alive and surrounded by neighbors. I've lived in a cell with a cellmate, open to the entire world for a month. I just want a place to myself even just for a little bit.
And that was it. She sighed through her teeth. Now what? What had they accomplished?

Now they were done; they'd accomplished the task at hand. Austin took all the papers and then pointedly thrust the one with his and Greta's name at Wataru, thrust the one with his and Wataru's name at Greta, and kept the last one for himself. The way he stood was sharp and finite, tucking all the pens back into his pocket and rolling his shoulders.
Partly, he wanted to storm off. But after a moment's thought, he'd pause and offer his hand to each of them in turn. They could all shake before the went their separate ways.
