The knife was vital, it was a weapon, a tool, you could remove something embedded in the flesh, cut open a corpse or stab it's eye. It was a tool of multiple uses. Walking up he reached for it lifting the blade in turn like everyone else had, it was heavy, off balanced.
It wasn't a scalpel by any means, it felt lopsided and fat in his hand he rolled it around a few time offering a few slashes with it before putting it down with a frown, maybe it just wasn't the knife for him.
"I think it might end up better in someone else hands."
(Clearly the thing to do with a sweater was layer it on top of your other sweaters. Monica? She knew what was up.)
"Sounds good, sir!" Monica grinned. The problem was that even though she'd wanted a knife ever since she'd seen Lee's...well, Monica wasn't exactly experienced with knifes that you didn't use for eating. She didn't really know what she could do with one, after all, unless it was slice randomly in the air.
Needless to say, someone removed it from her grasp before she could hurt herself with it. Whoops.

A knife! A knife was something she could work with. While she'd been stuck in prison she hadn't been able to practice with her knives, she did have a set she had stolen acquired early on in her adulthood. She had to prove that she was useful, and her paintball skills were awful so she really didn't think she saw a gun being used in her future. Determined to show the Boss just what she could do, she was horrified when she fumbled with it and nearly dropped it to the ground. Well there went her chances of being useful. Had it really been that long since she had used a knife? She could really just cry right now at how bad she had done. She'd wasted everyone's time once again and now the Boss probably thought she was a fool. Great way to show skills, Diana.

Shaun had hoped the answer wouldn't be 'fight over the stuff' but apparently it was something more up his alley - showing off! He didn't really want the knife, but Shaun couldn't resist the chance to show his stuff.
He was more interested in the sweater though, to be honest... that seemed comfy and warm...
Except, he actually did pretty well with the knife! He'd always been good with his hands - he'd had to be - and he darted forard and back, slashing and swiping and finally flipping the knife into the air and catching it - perfect. No fingers lost, no wounds gained.
"Well, how about that!" he said, pleased with himself as he passed the knife on...

Quietly shuffling out into the open from wherever he'd been lingering, Max took the knife next, jabbing it at the air experimentally. It didn't take much imagination for him to realize he looked rather foolish, and after a few equally ineffective slices, he returned the weapon to the boss. Nope.

When all was said and done, Monica shuffled happily into the circle forming for the sweater. You could never really have too many sweaters...right?
She oohed and ahhed appropriately at particularly impressive displays of skill, though. Their faction was strong, and that was a good thing! (Although it did seem that, on the whole, people were more bewildered by the knife than anything else. Well...practice made perfect!)

Structure. Order. Those were comforting words and concepts to someone like Greta. She liked knowing her place, knowing where she fit in the great machine of an organization, what she could do and what she shouldn't. She wasn't sure she wanted to be in charge of anyone though, even if she wanted to be useful.
A knife on the other hand was not what she was after. If she had a knife in hand, they might want her to fight. She tried anyways though, something had to show for all the time she had spent in the kitchen (not that fighting the undying was anything like slicing vegetables). If it made the difference between survival and losing her sense of self, she would take a knife.

Vayne listened to all that was being said with a bit of a smirk to his lips. A chance at being a leader, hmm well he used to be a hacker and kind of a street menace, but a leader.. it would be nice to try. The blond stepped close as he thought about it, and shrugged again getting into the line to try his luck with the blade. He could really use that a heck of a lot more than a gun or something like that.
Taking the blade in his hand he tested the weight and balance before just tossing it toward the target. He had never thrown one before but it seemed to be what they were being tested for. The blond watched the knife fly but didn't bother checking to see where it hit. Boss would decide anyway, so who knows what he was checking for.

In the wake of the surprise attack, it wasn’t especially surprising to Adelaide that the warden would consider some kind of reform. They had done relatively well under a dual-positioned leadership this long, but the thing about outbreaks was that eventually one found themselves adapting to something new. And with the scare that undying in the yard had given her, the older woman was ready to kick some a**—which had nothing to do with missing with her rock at all thank you. Paintball could only do so much, and she wasn’t highly keen on the fight club until her exercising improved at the very least.
Boss was talking about a ladder of leadership, and a spark lit up in Adelaide’s eyes. She didn’t consider herself ambitious per se, but she did like the idea of actually having some responsibility instead of being just that much closer to invalid-status. After all, Hershel lasted a damn long while in his situation; it’d be insulting not to try and do the same.
(And thankfully, there would be no need for a long a** farm period to establish it either. She’d get to skip right to the exciting prison period.)
She considered the four sections available and hummed to herself in thought. Sparse items and a little contest might have seemed meager on the outside, but these little steps, these moments of…well, trust almost, Adelaide supposed, now that was what an outbreak was really about: how long do you stay human, and how far are you willing to stretch that definition? Amongst criminals, it might have been risky. Desperation, then? The Boss could clearly hold his own after that display in the yard earlier…Ah well, maybe she was reading into it too much. But she did have to snort at the idea of stick spinning of all things. Honestly…
She did, however, give the woman with the best show of the knife so far a wolf whistle for both genuine appreciation of the skill and for shits and giggles.
Afterwards, Adelaide took the knife from the last young man and displayed as best she could with the weapon, though her wrist wasn’t like it used to. Probably payback for the cardio from earlier. Bah.
“Not bad, am I right?” she bragged to the aforementioned punk with a lopsided grin as she passed the knife off to the next person. “I’d much rather the Boss’ sidearm, though. Knives are a bit too personal.”

Vayne's metal bedecked lips quirked as he watched the next in line throw the knife. "Heh, seems today is an off day for some of us." It figured it would be when there was actually something they could use up for grabs.
He ran one hand through his hair and shook his head slightly, a bit ashamed of his showing, but not really upset about it. You can't do perfect all the time, and he was better suited to punching things in the face anyway, that or just really messing up electronics to take them down that way. Since that wasn't an option he just had to make do. "Good shot though, seems we already know who is gonna win." He pointed a thumb back at the girl who had done the best so far. "'cept we don't know what the boss is lookin' for. He may be lookin' for one of us to hit the neck of the dead sucker or something. Things can be weird."
He thought about how she wanted a gun instead of a knife and shook his head. "Give me a good set of brass knuckles, and some computerized s**t and I can take out a nice section of these guys. Sadly... electronics have gone to hell, and taken the fun with them."

Maria stood near the back of the group, her face determined as she nodded at The Boss' words. This was her chance to step up and begin to prove herself, especially with the healing people needed around the area. Before, she was a civilian, but now she could be something more. Although she was excited, she also knew her odds to get too high were slim. She could focus on helping others around here and maybe then they could survive.
She saw the man pull out a knife, and stood back while others attempted to fight. It was interesting, but after today's paintball training, she wasn't sure it was the best idea. Beside, she wanted to heal, not fight. So she sat back and watched.

He rolled his head back letting his neck crack a bit before he looked back at the woman in front of him. Longest chat he had with a girl willingly in a long time. Not that he was bad with them, he just hated really talking to most people. "I could likely tamper with some of the stuff and make it a bit more jacked up. Lift the circuits till they can't be stressed any more. I'd like to ask Boss about if he thinks there could be somthin' done with the fences but I aint had the chance."
