Sascha chuckled at the idea of a plant with squeaky leaves, but he supposed it could be possible. Nature was pretty crazy, and if you really thought about it, anything could happen. There could've been plants with giant feathers or trees that made cake instead of berries... Or worse, trees made entirely of fire! He shuddered to think of stumbling upon a forest filled with naturally flaming trees and quickly finished his writing. Better not give the universe any ideas, right?

"I hope these are right!" He said, handing in his paper. "I'd like to see these plants up close one day. They sound really nice."

Rajna didn't want to use pencils. So she used her favourite pack of crayons instead. She was going to draw a pretty night tulip, and she was also going to draw her teacher and give it to him as a present. It was just lucky that it was also part of her assignment.

After about ten minutes of scribbling colours and vague shapes on to her page, Rajna grabbed the slip of paper, tail dragging across the floor as she padded over to Corben with heavy feet, waving the page a little excitedly at him.

"I finish!" while her voice sounded cheerful, Rajna wasn't smiling. Which was. Kinda creepy. Not that she noticed. "I drew you! See?" Rajna pointed with one claw to the bulbous-headed stick figure on the page, stating it was a night tulip with a noodly arm gesturing to it. Honestly, the drawing was horrendous. But Rajna thought it was pretty decent, as far as her artistic skill was concerned, even tho she'd never consider herself an artist.

Plants were just. Pretty. That's why Rajna at least attempted to draw something with a bit of effort.

User ImageWednesday organized xir pencils, markers and pens all in a neat little pile before staring at them for a hard, long moment. Xir was going to draw a lily for Mr.Corben, and they wanted it to be perfect. Wednesday rather enjoyed art, and while this teeechnically wasn't art class, they had nothing to lose by putting their best foot forward!

Some kids took five minutes, some took fifteen or twenty ... but Wednesday took nearly the whole class to complete their work. Only once they were satisfied to xir drop from their desk and walk the image of the lily they created up to Corben.

"Here you are, sir!" Wednesday smiled. "I hope it shall suffice ... ?" Xir's heart pupils dilated with excitement, becoming far larger and more noticeable against their black sclera as they waited to hear if they had his approval.

Leif was not sure if it was okay to take a class from his dad, but he was the only herbalism teacher! And Leif really liked herbalism! So, he'd signed up for the class when he'd been given a sign up sheet, and thankfully had no issues.

A coloring assignment sounded fun! He gathered up the drawing supplies that Corben had offered to them, and then set to work drawing his favorite flower... A poppy! They were really pretty... and they came in lots of colors, but the red ones were his favorite.

Once he was done, he wrote his name on the page, and then went to hand it in to Corben.

Maeva listened with interest as Mr. Corben explained that they would be taking home a seedling for the week. She let the initial rush of other students get in and grab their plant before going over to look through them. After glancing through several of the information packets, she decided on one that wouldn't be too difficult to take care of in her dorm.

At the end of the week Maeva was pretty pleased with how well her seedling had grown. It had sprung up an inch or two, and was a suitably bright and happy green. Looking around at some of the other students' plants, she frowned. Her's hadn't grown that much. Maybe there was something she hadn't done quite right? Or it was probably just a species that didn't grow very much. Either way, she was pleased that she'd managed to keep it alive and healthy.

User ImageCallessa had been growing plants since she was three years old. She'd been gardening and growing vegetables for ages; dinner often featured homegrown fruits and vegetables. So taking care of this little flower would be totally easy.

Or it would have been easy if she hadn't been so overconfident. She stared forlornly at the dying little plant as her mother tutted and shook her head. Tears streaming from all four eyes, Callessa took the dying dear to her teacher the next day. "I'm so, so sorry, Mr. Corben," she whispered. "I didn't pay enough attention to my plant, and now it's dying." She wiped her eyes with a dirt-stained sleeve. "Please, I'd like to try again. I'll do better next time, I promise! I haven't had a plant die on me since I was little, I just, I just got over-confident, that's all! Please let me have another chance!"

Normally, Corben would be a little... teensy bit... annoyed. These plants were from his personal collection from plants he'd bred in his own greenhouse! But, oh the poor dear was crying. It was clear that she cared, she'd just... lost track of how difficult plants could be! That was all. He nodded to her request. "It's alright Callessa, I understand! We'll get you a new plant to keep an eye on." He smiled. Normally, if she were just a friend or a friend's kid he'd pat her on the shoulder. No such contact here, though! He turned to grab a new pot, and then held it out for her to take. "Here you go! Let's hope this one worked out better for you, hm?"

User ImageTeary-eyed with relief, Callessa exchanged the dying plant for the still-living one. When she got home that evening, she set up a strict schedule, monitored by her phone, to ensure that she took care of the plant. The next week, she did not let it out of her sight, except when she was at school. She left it on the windowsill during the day with a chicken-wire cage around it to prevent pets from getting in at it, and checked it for moisture every half an hour. A little manure from the fennekit pens and from her farming neighbors, and at the end of the next week, her new plant was thriving just fine. She was able to return the plant to her teacher with relief, gratitude, and pride.

User ImageFreshlings didn't have to take electives, but Xenophon's dad had suggested he take this course, and he'd do anything for his new father. Dad thought it would be a good idea to take this course, well, then he would. The teacher seemed really friendly, and the assignment seemed pretty easy. Draw his favorite flower. Well, he had two favorite flowers--roses and pumpkin flowers.

Pumpkin flowers were obvious--they turned into pumpkins, which were everywhere in October. Xeno liked them. A year ago, he hadn't liked pumpkins, since they meant October, which meant his birthday, which meant a constant reminder that he was a mutant, a freak--but this year was different. This year, October meant Jurvik taking him to the pumpkin patch and going on a hay ride with him and going back to the orphanage only to hear Jurvik ask the clerk about adopting him. October meant family now. So pumpkins were suddenly a good thing. Besides, they were orange, and he liked orange!

Then the rose. Roses also meant home. Jurvik and Xeno lived in the guest house of an old house that was owned by an elderly couple. The guest house consisted of a bedroom, a work room (now Xeno's room), and a kitchen. Outside the windows of the guest house grew their landlady's prize roses. They weren't blooming right now, but judging by the watercolor paintings over her mantelpiece in the main house, they were really pretty. She was the one who had insisted on buying Xeno a set of watercolor pencils--the same set he was drawing with right now. He couldn't wait to show her when he got home! But first he had to show Mr. Datura.

He held out the paper to show the teacher. "It's a rose and a pumpkin flower, " he added helpfully.

Cassie wasn't pleased with the assignment, but she was going to participate. She liked her own work to represent herself, and her fear of others bringing her down was heavy on her mind. She loved her peers, but not when it came to her grades. So, she had set out to help with the garden with a bright determination.

She was delighted to see the seeds she had planted herself were sprouting, the soft green leaves peeking up through the dirt. Of course everyone had contributed, but she felt extra warm knowing she hadn't managed to kill the portion she had planted. Reaching for the watering can, she was pleased that it seemed the garden was going very well. "You're just the cutest," she beamed at the plant, hoping Corben would be pleased with the class' results.

Malachi was excited to take another class, especially one like this. He loved to learn, after all, and this was something that was different. It was a bit lonely since Hailey didn't want to 'Take another learny class', but that was okay. He knew it wasn't her sort of thing.

As they were given their assignment to draw a picture of their favorite flower he didn't even have to think. Malachi took his crayons and paper out and began to draw. After a few minutes he gave a satisfied nod and stood, heading toward Mr. Corben to turn it in. "Here Mr. Corben... Bleeding Hearts are my favorite... I like the name and the pink." Giving a small smile as he handed his paper over, he then headed back to his seat.

As Malachi listened to what the assignment was this time, he cocked his head, giving a curious look. 'Biennial'... he'd never heard that word before. When Mr. Corben explained what those kind of plants were, he gave a quite "ooooh" to himself. That was interesting! Accepting the book as it was handed to him, he began flipping and reading through the pages, trying to find an interesting biennial plants.

After a little bit, he found the Brussels sprouts. That was something mom tried to make him eat sometimes... They were okay he supposed. Raising his hand, he waited for the teacher to call on him. Taking in a deep breath, he stood up, holding the book in front of him to show the picture. "These are Brussels sprouts... They're in the cabbage family. They taste kinda funny, but not too funny." and then he sat back down. That was all he could manage to get out as his nerves were getting the better of him.

User Image Eileen walked up from her desk and stood up in front of the class.

"Well, I had a great time in the community garden. Being around the flowers and plants was so relaxing." she said.

She took a deep breath, and continued her presentation.

"The hardest thing I thought we did was packing the dirt after placing the plants in the holes. The easiest was picking out which flowers to plant, of course." she said with a small chuckle.

After finishing up her presentation, she walked back to her desk and sat back down.
