Chance just waved away Molly's concern. There was no point in getting into detail about his mother when there was a lovely instrument in his hands and a young woman willing to teach him.
He experimented with the finger positions, sliding them this way and that and ignoring the stinging that pressing down too hard on the wires caused (he'd likely have blisters later, but that was to be expected). Chance tapped the bow very gently against the strings and was eventually able to produce a sound that was almost musical, much less rough.
"Ahhhh..." he said with satisfaction, lowering the bow again and smiling. "I forgot how thrilling it is to learn a new thing."

Molly stayed quiet as she listened, and after a point her mind started to wander, as did her eyes. She was staring off at the water until Chance spoke up again, and she started lightly as her head snapped back to face him. She beamed. "Gosh, I still don't think I'm teaching you...or that you're learning something new! You really had a great grasp on it already!"

Chance laughed a little.
"I think you're just being kind," he said with amusement. "Picking up a new instrument is pretty much one of the hardest things to do when you're my age, I think - but I appreciate your support," he added, grinning.
He picked up the bow again and tried once more, careful not to screech too badly.

"Oh, no...I'm being honest! I swear!" She laughed softly in return, tilting her head and rubbing the back of her head lightly. "Gosh--you can do it! At any age--" With enough cheerful banter with Chance, and with his easy going personality, she couldn't help but start to 'mom' him now. Molly reached out to take the end of the bow between her fingers, to help him guide the bow gently across the strings in a smooth transition. "Just like that..." She murmured, the tip of her tongue sticking out a bit in concentration.

Molly did seem the type to be terrible at lying, though she also seemed the type to lay on compliments thick, in a completely harmless, unaware sort of way. Chance grinned at her as she stood, fixing his hand position and trying to get the sound to come out smoother, and obediently he followed her instructions.
"I forgot how cutting these strings are," he said with a little laugh, as he pulled the bow, just slightly.

Molly let out another soft laugh. "Yeah...yeah they are." She let go of the bow, and then tentatively reached out to nudge his fingers as well. She made sure they were pressing hard enough and spaced correctly. She then stared at his hands for a long while, a hand pressed against her cheek and her brows knitted. Her head then snapped up. "Oh! I forgot to ask, too! Goodness---do you know how to read music sheets?"

He let her move his fingers into the proper positions on the strings, wincing only slightly when she pressed them down. Chance still had every intention of playing the instrument, but still - learning how to play again would be a little painful at first.
He turned to look at her, eyebrows raised. Chance gave a laugh.
"A very small amount, not as much as I should."
