Lawrence seemed to either not notice or not care about Al's tension and instead lay back again on the towel, the sunglasses hiding his eyes.
"I certainly can't speak for the whole division I am afraid. I am at the bottom rung so to speak, centred primarily in the infirmary. I mostly do the menial tasks, changing bedpans, wound dressings, helping to clean the used equipment and so on and so forth. It is satisfying in its own way and I am not concerned by smells etcetera. I am patient and progression will happen in its own time."

"So you mostly take care of the hurt peoples?" He asked for clarity even know he knew exactly that that was what Lawr was saying. He smiled, "that's cool. I'm no good at that. I think I'd just make um worse. Probably why I'm in Death instead." Stabbing folks with artifacts and all, totally describes Al to a T.
"You've been gone for a long while man? That or I just have terrible timing. I think it's been like... a year? What all happened to you?" He glanced him over thoughtfully. "Other than a promotion."

"Exactly." he said calmly. "Though that is certainly a strange way to phrase it. Hurt people generally take care of themselves, the oness is on their immune system and antibody capabilities to resist infection and close injuries. All a doctor does ultimately is help to stabilise what is destabilised, provide structure and a framework for recovery and soothe the mind of the patient. Taking care could also mean putting a hopeless case of suffering out of its misery, I do not think that is within my purview." He seemed to enjoy considering this, at least as much as he enjoyed anything.
"Making people worse has its own place, this organisation thrives on escalating dangerous situations from what I have experienced, but yes it does not sound like something they would want in the infirmary."
At the question on his absence he shrugged. "I was podded because Horace got injured." he idly rubbed his thumb against his ring finger. "It was all rather tragic. But now I am back, I can positively sense the joy from the general community that I have returned."

Al just sat there giving Lawr a vacant-eyed stare as he attempted to explain things in great detail before finally piping up in a sing-songey tone, "you sound really smart." Really though, he hoped he did not ever fall into the category of 'hopeless case of suffering' with Lawr around. He was not sure what he himself would consider to be such and to cull a person based on opinion of what is and what wasn't hopeless, he just didn't trust Lawr's personal judgement on the topic - or anyone else's really.
"Oh, why did they pod you if he just got hurt? You didn't do it, Did you?" He was smiling as brightly as ever. Surely Lawr was incapable of such a thing, must be a misunderstanding.

Al got a sidelong glance. "I get by." he said with false modesty, the truth of the matter was that he was probably the smartest creature on the island by his own measure and his own measure was all that mattered. This boy was just that however, a boy and any further elucidation on his own merits would be lost upon him.
"Oh yes, I did actually." he said flippantly. "That was why they put me in there. It was a misunderstanding."

"Really?" He sounded surprised by this, "Why?" He leaned back a little from Lawr in shock. Eyebrows raised high on his forehead.

"I had my own reasons." he said. "Reasons which are between him and I. Suffice to say however, it was something that he requested, therefore the punishment was unwarranted." He talked about it as if it was some simple clerical error which should not have happened at all.

"Just for the record, " Al made no move to relax again. "I like all my bits and bobs exactly where they are." He nodded. Because without some humor in it, all that was left to hold on to would be fear and Al honestly did not feel like doing that. He eyed Lawrence over curiously, "didn't they have any evidence it wasn't mutual, though?"

"Noted." Lawrence said with a smile. "Most people do, or at the very least they think they do. I would not harm someone who didn't wish to be harmed pardner. Besides, even if I did want to hurt someone, I am not strong, I was not blessed in the physical strength department." At his further question Al received a raised brow. "They had little evidence other than the physical harm exacted upon Horace's person and general hearsay from America and Taym, who - as you know - are hardly the most trustworthy or stable individuals on the island."
He sighed. "Alas it was simply an alternative lifestyle gatecrashed by the sort of people incapable of comprehending that sort of thing."

While Al understood the thought, he also was not sure what he believed or even if he honestly cared as long as his own fingers weren't on the table. He eyed the sandy beach ahead of them thoughtfully. "Have to admit, I'm kind of curious what you did with the finger. Good luck charm? Door stop? Book mark? Cloned another Horace?... Please don't do that last one."
