Naar sighed, dusting his fingers against Malta's scales as he leaned into the covered protection of her leathery wings. While there weren't a great many khehora he felt comfortable, around this unfamiliar and questionable group, her presence was welcome. Plus, she could fly. This seemed like an important bonus if he was to be doing anything with any amount of ocean between him and solid ground. "I'm happy you came," he told her in a quiet murmur.

Then Kaylinth was beckoning them near with a wave of his hand.

It was with some hesitance that Naar approached, expression neutrally mistrusting and wary. The older man didn't seem to take it personally. "This is Lyne, and her son," Naar's head snapped quizzically to the side (people actually kept hybrid children?), "Shyka. Lyne owns this boat. She's a very good friend of mine." A brief pause. "Stop looking like that," Kay griped softly, giving Naar's shoulder a shake. "Be polite, hm?"

"Is he actually coming with-"

Shyka scoffed, crossing his arms. "You can speak t me. I'm right here."

"Right..." Heat crawled into Naarhiji's face, and he was thankful for the deep tone of his skin to hide it. Only grudgingly did he turn his attention to the half-dovaa boy. At least half dovaa and part Orderite probably. Naar couldn't see colors, and the new young man didn't have wings, but the flecks of some added color to his hair managed to look brighter somehow. "Are you coming with us?"

"No," Shyka retorted. If Naar's relief was visible, he didn't comment on it. "We were under the impression this was a date, but-" His gaze slid to Malta. "Anyway, I didn't want to be in the way. Ya'll's have fun without me." He flicked his wrist in farewell and strode away, off down the dock.

A minute later Naar was being tugged onto the boat- the rocking boat, with Malta in tow, and Kay in the lead. The Dovaa woman took the role of casting them off. There wasn't much time for arguing between the time Naar's feet hit the deck of the boat and the time the boat hit open water. But when it did- "I feel a little less confident about this the farther long we go. We shouldn't possibly be able to go that much farther out. And I just don't know if I want to get in the water. You can't even see what's in there..."

Malta rumbled softly in a low, resonant, short little purr. If she'd had the capacity for blushing, she would have blushed a little. Being told something like that wasn't much, honestly, but it meant a lot to the khehora. For so long, it hadn't been true.

She was glad that Naar was glad that she was there.

She hung back, next to Naar, as they spoke to the Magescians. She was protected by Naar and his... friend? Date? Ah. That kind of friend, the ones that paid him to mate with them. Very strange, but Malta didn't judge. Magescians were just strange overall, and soon they were rid of all but this strange special friend - of Kay. Malta wondered, briefly, if she was in the way of something. Naar didn't let her interfere with his friends, and Malta didn't try. That they were dangerous (and honestly, they all were) was enough.

The young magesican had somewhat implied as much, though. Yet, she had been invited, and Naar needed her. She needed to protect him. "It'll be fine." she reassurred him, pretending she wasn't aware of the irony of her saying that. If worse came to worse, the adult Oblivionite could be used as bait while she flew Naar out of trouble, but if Kay had done this before... And since she had done it before... "But you don't have to." she said, giving him a snuggle while, simultaniously eying Kay. "I want to see if I find anything, though..." and, really, she did. She liked swimming, and she liked finding pearls and other treasures of the sea - it was very exciting and practical, and she got to do it with her friend. What more could she ask for?

"Unless... you want me to stay here with you?" she said hesitantly...

Naar glowered down into the water. He'd never been especially fond of things he couldn't see through. His vision was fine in the dark, but amongst the choppy, churning waves of the ocean, Naarhiji concerns were significantly higher. Somewhere behind him, off toward the front of the boat, he could hear the older people talking. There was no way of knowing what they were saying over the wind and splashing, but when Kaylinth laughed, Naar felt an unshakable suspicion that it was at his suspense.

Probably nothing, but it didn't reassure him.

He groaned softly at Malta's assurances. Of course he didn't have to, but he'd said he would, so he couldn't not now. Besides, on some level, he trusted Malta, and on some entirely unrelated level he 'trusted' Kay. They were going to be fine. And the khehora female sounded too disappointed at the thought of remaining behind to entertain it for long.

"I don't really want to go," Naar admitted, "But I don't want to keep you from going, and I wouldn't ask you to stay behind." He glanced into the water again until footsteps approached from the rear. Warily, Naar cast his gaze over his shoulder. Kaylinh strode up to them, carrying a small jar of watery, viscous... stuff. Naarhiji squinted at it.

"I don't know how long you can hold your breath, Malta, but you're welcome to use our supplies, if you need it," Kay assured, offering the container to her first.

Naar felt a deep need to remind his much older companion that he wasn't about to ingest anything that came out of something else's mouth. But somehow, voicing such commentary felt like it would open him up for attack. Instead, Naar pinched his lips shut, fidgeted, and pressed close at Malta's side.
