Mid Rank Availability Username: AstoriaFallen Character: Naressa Dragon: Reciproth (I don't have a colored dragon yet, but I was approved for the Aged out event.) Colour: Blue Rank: Search Prompt: Instead of the usual two on this flight, there were three. The brown firelizard had decided he was going to make himself comfortable on her shoulder instead of doing whatever it was he normally did when her and Reciproth were out searching the holds for potential candidates. It wasn't odd for him to do such a thing, but she hadn't been expecting it today but she wasn't going to shoo him away. Well maybe if he kept doing that! "Tris!" She turned her head to look at the brown that had decided he was going to stick his nose in her ear. It seemed he had done it just because, and for no other reason, for he curled against her and held on as if nothing had happened and the three of them flew over one of the nearby holds as they headed towards the sea. 'I could eat him and he wouldn't bother you anymore.' The large blue thrummed as he caught a draft and it carried them over towards Eron. He had a feeling about there and wanted to make a sweep in search of any potential candidates. Plus he very much enjoyed the sea, as did his rider. He had a fondness for some of the fish, even though it took more than a few mouthfuls to fill him up. It was still worth the trip every now and again. She had been stressing a little lately and he felt that she needed this more than his insatiable need to satisfy his hunch. 'Oh none of that. You won't be eating him.' Tris lifted his head as if faintly worried but it was all in jest. The brown knew well enough he was safe and she reached up a hand to stroke his head for a moment before looking down across the lands. 'Eron hold?' She enjoyed flying over the sea and visiting the hold as they had much to offer there, especially trading wise, but it had been a moment since they had traveled that far. 'I have a feeling mine. And I'm rarely wrong about these sorts of things.' It was often true enough that when the blue had a hunch about something, she should just go with it. They had argued more than one occasion about his hunches and she finally, over the years, stopped fussing over his whims and just went with them now. And besides, if it was a bust they could check out the trade stands. It never hurt to have more candidates and she really wasn't entirely sure when the next clutch was going to be laid. Crimsons were unpredictable with their clutches and Golds weren't as abundant as they used to be so clutches were far and few between. She hung on as Reciproth banked slightly and started to descend towards the Hold as it came into view and she could smell the salt in the air. (Is it fresh or salt water?) It was a very calming scent and she wondered who this hunch was he was searching out. 'You should just trust your bonded mine. I know what I'm doing.' She laughed and scratched the scales within reach of her and she would make a point to do that more, if this trip turned out fruitful. (WC:549)

Assistant Weyrlingmaster/Candidatemaster Application Name: MaltaDragon/Colour: Green Poecileth Age: 46 Position Applying for: Assistant Candidatemaster What leadership experience do you possess? ”Well, not much. However, I was a major player in the coup against Keller, and Poecileth and I arranged supply... uh... acquisition and drops. I have been making my own decisions for several years, though, if that counts.”Have you worked with youth before? In what way? ”During the clutches in Benden and Malvren, I assisted in question and answer sessions. I also gave the young candidates a friendly ear to talk to, and some advice here and there. The same with the weyrlings, too. I think... some of them needed that – someone to talk to who they could trust. Trust was pretty hard to come by, in the wherholds...”Why does the position interest you? ”I have always liked working with young people, and I feel that, with my experience out in the field, I can at least assist with training.
I... I'll be honest with you. I don't want to be a passive player in the world anymore. I want to do something, and teaching and training these children is something I feel I can do. For myself. For the Weyr. For the world.”In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of the position you're applying for? ”The assistant candidatemaster helps to prepare children of all walks of life for the world. Even if they don't Impress, they still leave with useful skills and are able to really do something in the world. I still remember my own candidatemaster and their Assistants. Without them, without what they taught me while I was a candidate, I... I don't think I would be here today. It's an important job, and I'd be honored to do it.”How would you deal with the following situations (answer the ones that apply to the position you are interested in): 1) One of your wards, a Candidate, is causing problems in class. They possess a traditional attitude and are vocal about how they will Impress a metallic dragon then 'right' the Weyr's wayward path. What do you do? ”I would take them aside and give them extra chores. They won't like it, I'm sure. Actually, they'd probably hate me for it. But they have to learn that if they want to change anything, they will have to work hard for it. If they feel that the Weyr is on a 'wayward path' – which I don't agree with, by the way – then they cannot simply have change handed to them on a shiny platter. If that is what they want, they need to work for it.
If they continue to be a problem – and I know, giving them extra chores might backfire and make them worse - I might make them act as a tag along for another rider, assisting them in their daily tasks and otherwise getting to know their life. Although this would interfere with their classes, certainly, it would help them to understand why things have become the way they are, or how hard things could be. I couldn't do that with every candidate, and I couldn't get just any rider to agree to this, but I think it would help a lot in very frustrating cases...”2) A Candidate's family has come calling, attempting to take back their child from the Weyr and the Candidate does not want to leave. Do you intervene and talk to the invidividuals involved or remain at a distance? ”I would definitely try to intercede. If the candidate does not want to leave, then I would have an obligation to keep them there... unless, of course, Weyr life was actually detrimental to them. It does happen. I would make an educated decision and, if I saw that there was no harm to them staying, then I would try to convince their parents otherwise. I wouldn't use force, of course, but I would use any persuasive weapon at my disposal. I wouldn't want to let the child down.”

Mid Rank Availability Username: mewrose Character: Lia Dragon: Mirath Colour: Crimson Rank: Courier Prompt: Mirath appeared in the sky and immediately announced her presence with a cheerful bugle. Careful there, you might startle the holders, Lia chided, leaning over her dragon’s shoulder to look down at the minor hold they’d just traveled to. You better circle down a bit before landing, to give them time to get used to us.They will be glad to see us. We have good news! Mirath responded unabashedly, but she did tilt her wings to spiral down gently. That doesn’t make them any more used to hearing dragons out of the blue, Lia retorted. There, that courtyard looks big enough for you, she added, holding the image of the one she meant in her mind. Mirath certainly couldn’t see her hand if she pointed. As her dragon angled towards the courtyard, people started to gather there so they could stare up at them, then scattered into the buildings when it became evident that the dragon would soon be taking up the space. Mirath touched down lightly in the center, then crouched down so Lia could slide down her shoulder. The rider took a moment to take off her gloves and pull a piece of paper out of her carrysack, giving someone in charge time to gather. Sure enough, in moments a man with Lord Holder knots was striding towards her. Lia smiled warmly and stepped forward to meet him. “Good day to you, Lord Holder! I’m Lia of Crimson Mirath, from Trine Weyr. I come with a message for you.” She indicated the piece of paper, and waited until he gestured for her to go on. “Trine is delighted to inform you that the clutch currently on the sands will hatch and day now, and you and your Lady are invited to the imminent Hatching. In addition, I have a list here of parents in your hold whose children will be Standing as Candidates for the clutch; they are invited as well.” She handed the piece of paper to him, then gave him a moment to read it over. “Since we can never be certain of the exact date or time a Hatching will occur, we advise you and anyone else who would like to come to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. Once the Hatching begins, one or more dragons will arrive her to bring over anyone interested.” While the Lord finished reading and offered his thanks for the message, Lia’s mental focus was drawn to Mirath. The crimson had remained crouching and was eying the small children who were clustered under the eaves of the nearby buildings. Mine, look at the little ones! They are so precious, the crimson cooed. But why do they not come closer? They’ve probably never seen a dragon before and don’t know what to make of you, she answered, while still keeping an ear on the Lord Holder. When he’d finished, she asked, “Do you have any questions or return messages, sir?” Once he said no, she bowed and turned to head back to Mirath. As she turned, she pretended to just notice a young girl who’d crept a few steps towards the dragon. “Oh, hello there! Would you like to come meet my dragon?” she asked the girl. The child spooked and ran back to her peers, but a wide-eyed boy stepped up instead. “Can we really meet him?” “Her,” Lia corrected gently. “Crimsons are all female. And she’d be happy to. Mirath,” she called over her shoulder, “I have someone who’d like to meet you.” The great dragon turned her head and lowered it until it was laying on the ground before the boy, her eyes whirling green. To the boy Lia said, “This is Mirath. She loves children. You can touch her if you like.” Mirath held patiently still as the boy cautiously inched forward and put a hand on her snout. “She’s soft!” he said in surprise as he started to pet her. Now other children began to grow bold and creep forward as well. She waved them forward and when they started peppering her with questions about her dragon, she answered gladly. Part of their job was acting as the face of the weyr, and she took any chance to leave people with a good impression of riders and dragons. Looks like this is another trip that’ll end in a rousing session of climb-the-dragon, she noted privately to Mirath. Those are the best ones, the dragon replied happily. (Word count: 744)

Round 2 Wingleader/Wingsecond Application Name: Arlii Dragon/Colour: Crimson ErinaethAge: 43 & 28 Provide your answer to all of these situations: 1) One of your Riders has taken a severe hit of Thread and was unable to go Between before succumbing to its viciousness. Their bodies tumble from the sky lifeless and disintegrating. Above, their Weyrmate, also in your Wing, sees them falling and screams, breaking rank to pursue their lover to the ground. What do you do? Sweet Faranth, that is not a pleasant sight to think on. I'd shaffing order their asses back into place. If they refuse, I'll personally see that they are punished with double the workload and be grounded for a few months. If they still refuse my command, they're on their own and I'll fill the space as best I can with my wingriders. There's nothing else that could be done for the poor sod and I'd rather not lose more riders to stupidity.2) Trine Weyr is hosting a Gather and all Wingleaders are expected to attend as political delegates representing the Weyr. Among the guests is a Holder that is particularly outspoken about the burden Trine Weyr has become on its territories and is threatening to cut off Tithes. Tensions are running high and he looks ready to fight someone as he hotly debates this with another rider, who is turning a particularly hot shade of red. How do you handle the situation? Since punching a Holder in the face is usually frowned upon, I'd make sure the rider wasn't about to do anything he'd regret first before kindly reminding the Holder in question that without Trine Weyr, he'd not have any territories to fret over in the first place. And if he truly feels that way, well. We could always pull back our Wings and let thread devour his land~
Alas, there will always be someone shaffing dimglowed and angry at us, no matter what we do.3) Your Wingsecond is lost to Thread and your Wing is mourning her death. However, you need to replace her and three candidates stand out to you. Who are they and why are you considering them? Who would be your final choice and why? They would be the most loyal of my Wing and the ones that understand how we, as a Wing, work best. For my Second has to be able to handle things should I be absent, or Faranth help them, I'm lost as well. I have to make sure my Wing is left in good hands. These three would also have to be levelheaded enough to not be bothered by the crap we get from Holders. Or be threatened by the internal fighting that is bound to happen. I'd want them to have a firm hand too, so they can keep control of situations and not be walked all over. If I can't trust them with my life, they are not fit enough to be my Second. Or be in my Wing for that matter.

Mid Rank Availability Username: Shaddaling Character: Hol'nDragon: TasenethColour:Silver Rank: Search Prompt: Thread came and went and they had managed to keep themselves and the ones they cared about safe. Still, new options had opened for them. Hol’n had never considered a leadership positon for herself. That was more of her elder brother’s forte but they had both impressed Crimsons, not Silvers, not Bronzes, not leadership colors. She snorted, lips slightly curled upwards in irritation. Tasenth was silver, but the poison that killed Sharath had left him deaf and mute. Atypical had health problems, needed help breaking out of their shells, assistance and Hol’n never begrudged him any of her time or sleepless nights in the first couple months. She had spoken to Nash about her hatchling and they had swapped stories. He thought the delicate ear bones had not developed correctly and likely the same for the vocal box. She sighed, stroking slowly over Taseneth’s nose, looking at the relaxed silver. He murmured, reaching out to envelop her in warmth, leaving the smell of warm metal and lilacs.
She murmured, sprawling over the warm hide, stroking in slow circles. Tasaneth started and shut his eyes, content.
Hol’n replied, shifting slightly, resting her chin on her hand in thought. She had tossed aside wardens, Tasaneth couldn’t hear and couldn’t give an audible warning. She felt too young to consider any leadership positon in the wing let alone the weyr and Tasaneth disliked crowds for multiple reasons. Courier perhaps but she didn’t care to be a letter carrier.
Tasaneth mental voice rumbled as he collected his thoughts. He clicked his claws thoughtful.
Hol’n chuckled, breathing the scent of warm hide and oil. They would be searching for candidates for all the queens and breeding crimsons but that didn’t mean that they couldn’t be a bit fond over the crimsons that were part of their family. Charisma Tasaneth had in spades, he certainly loved to be praised and fawned over. She was perhaps quieter then what was truly looked for, but intuition… she certainly could tell when someone had talent. She hummed, stroking in slow circles.
Tasaneth replied, perhaps a tad surprised but certainly pleased, tail curing inwards and eyes whirling in pleasure.
Hol’n mused and stretched, sliding away and slung herself onto his back, settling into the saddle.
Hol’n touched his neck, stroking as he sent the image.
< I think a trip would be most informative.> Tasaneth replied and launched himself skywards. __________________________________________________________ Tasaneth said icily, eyes roaming over the candidates, sharing a potential with his rider to draw her attention to them.
Hol’n mused, looking over the potential candidate. Tiny slip of a gal, but there was a lot of determination in that face. And that was two candidates to have a talk to.
If they were truly going to be riders, well they should have some facts explained before they left their lives behind.

Assistant Weyrlingmaster/Candidatemaster Application Name: Natai Dragon/Colour: Gold Iachixth Age: 32 Position Applying for: Assistant Weyrlingmaster
What leadership experience do you possess? Former Weyrwoman of Euclid Weyrhold.
Have you worked with youth before? In what way? Yes. I have helped raise my brothers and sisters from infancy to adulthood, along with assisting with the younger riders and children at Euclid. I am also the primary caregiver to my six year old daughter after having gone through Weyrlinghood at an age older than most, with the ages that would be going through Weyrlinghood.
Why does the position interest you? Organization, guidance, and teaching are passions of mine. I firmly believe that all young people become Riders for different reasons that may be ignored in favor for the idea of why they Stand. I want to be a part of the system that encourages color equality and the single best way of doing that is to teach the young dragons and their riders this from the first day. These Riders are our future. I for one would like to see that future nurtured rather than put into the old boxes we once tried to fit them.
In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of the position you're applying for? Ah -- ha, it seems I may have become a bit enthusiastic in the previous question. The most important part is teaching these riders that they all have worth, equal worth, breeder or fighter, large or small. They must be able to feel good about themselves, love their Weyr, and have figures in their life they can look up to and talk to.
How would you deal with the following situations: 1) A Weyrling has chosen to learn to fly before her dragon's wing muscles are ready. They injure themselves in the attempt and, in trying cover up their mistake, blame it on rough housing. One of their peers informs you of their mistake - how do you approach the problem?
I suppose a passive aggressive group class on proper dragon growth and the stunting thereof if pushed too far is out of line, isn't it? Or one on honor and lying?
Barring that, a sit down talk with the Weyrling is in order. They need not know who told me; that isn't the problem. Nor is the problem entirely their ... proactive decision, even though it is still a major part. Lying, on the other hand, that is a brand new creature in and of itself.
Ought I go into detail on the questions I would ask? It depends on the Weyrling. Ramoth knows I understand taking on large things when one is not fully ready. It usually means a confident but quiet approach and letting them know I am aware what happened, give them the chance to admit to the lie in order to keep away from the tougher of punishments. I can't imagine me not giving a bit of a chew out about damaging their dragon in a way that could have easily been permanent or worse, of lying about not only themselves but of their group mates.
If they are contrite and genuine about it, their punishment will be writing a short bit about why the training plan was created for growing dragons, followed by extra lessons on flying and a weeks worth of Candidate-level chores.
Should they be less than gracious over being caught, all of the above still apply save for a longer writing requirement and practicing flying on the ground for a fortnight once the clutch is old enough to fly. Practice makes for less hurt wings.
3) A newly Impressed individual is having trouble fitting in with their group because their dragon maimed several Candidates, and injured a handful of hatchlings on the Sands and the new riders are worried about the safety of their own dragons. How do you handle this situation?
Oh, how unfortunate, the poor thing.
After receiving permission from the Weyrlingmaster, first is to speak with those with wounded dragons -- individually, mind. People are much more prone to being honest when not in a group of their peers. I would ask about their worries and how they are doing, following up with a discussion on what they think could happen. All attempts to soothe worries will be made along with assurances that wanting to protect ones dragons is natural and understandable but that newly hatched dragons maul. It is simply a thing that happens. Once they are bonded, they can no longer hurt humans and repercussions are faced should they attempt to harm another dragon.
The same conversation will happen with the dragonrider and the dragon in question. It's never easy to be isolated from ones peer group. On approval from the Weyrlingmaster, I would like the next group class to involve some sort of bonding activity -- preferably one that doesn't make the entirety of the group roll their eyes at me. ... Or, perhaps, one that does. They can bond over my attempt at being cheesy. There have plenty of friendships bloom from eye-rolling during my discussions about peace, before.
Then I would go and have a discussion with the Candidatemaster in regards to the lack in their classes in regards to standard, normal dragonet behavior during a hatching so they may provide proper lectures in the future.

Junior Weyrleader ApplicationName: A’nos Dragon/Colour: Acriculeth/Bronze Age: 39/19 What is your motto or tagline?: “ ‘Serve the People.’ Some might say it’s a little trite but I’m a Harper, I’m allowed! In any case, trite or not I believe it and try to live to it.” What are your political priorities?: “Stability, the growth of trade, and education. I want to see Trine flourish and I think those three things are the cornerstones of making that happen: first we need to be safe, then we need resources, and then we need to give our children a world class education that will in turn give them the ability to achieve in life whether they Impress a dragon or not.” Under whom would you prefer to serve?: “The Weyrleader, I feel it’s a better fit for my skills and experience though of course I understand it is the role of a Junior to assist both Weyrleader and Weyrwoman as required.” Why are you pursuing this position?: “Haha! Well, I am one of those few people who actually enjoys politics for a start, I take a great deal of satisfaction in negotiating resolutions to problems that are acceptable to all parties. Well, as acceptable as possible; there are times when we must compromise and to believe otherwise is foolish, and in those instances I will do my very best to make sure Trine’s interests are represented properly. I also have a keen interest in law and justice, I want to be a part of seeing this Weyr run even-handedly for all men, women, and dragonkin.” What makes you qualified?: “I am an arbitrator by craft as it happens; I spent ten turns studying law, diplomacy, and politics at Harper Hall, as well as music and dance of course. I earned my Journeyman’s knots based not on my skill in music but my gift for arbitration, and in fact working in the craft is what brought me to Benden Weyr where I was picked out by a Search dragon and later Impressed. I also believe that my role in the coup against Keller has given me useful skills, it certainly taught me to be cool under pressure in a way that even Harper training could not! I also learned first hand about espionage, which equips me to root out any such nefariousness in Trine. In more general terms I am organised, diligent, and unafraid to voice my views. I will not agree with my superiors or peers unless I mean what I say though of course I will only air my views under appropriate circumstances, public dissent between the Weyr’s leaders would not look good and could potentially weaken our position on the global stage. I understand people quite well too, a vital skill for any leader. Also, I write very neat shorthand so I can take swift and accurate minutes of meetings should it be required of me. I know it’s never a popular task!” Given the tumultuous history of Pern over the last few decades, what do you think the greatest lesson learned is?: “Though it may be a little cliche I would have to say ‘power corrupts’, and so I think it is vital that leaders be answerable to their people. Take Keller for example, his madness could not have gone on as long as it did had he been elected rather than an absolute dictator. As for Golds and bronzes, well they ran the Weyrs well enough for generations uncounted but as soon as they were challenged many of them turned violent in an attempt to cling onto their power and privilege…. So yes, power corrupts, and when a powerful person becomes corrupt the world cannot turn a blind eye. Whatever fine things in life they might enjoy our leaders must ultimately be there to serve, not to be served.” How will you support and grow the current initiatives the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman are championing (colour equality & Rogue Hunters)?: “For equality I think it’s all about education. The people who grew up with the old order and wish it still existed? Honestly I don’t think we will change many of them but we can make sure the next generation is different. We must teach the youngest Weyrbrats that green is as worthy as bronze and to do that we have to be careful about the tales we tell them and the songs we sing to them, children absorb a lot in their first few turns and we need to be sure that it isn’t the same old rhetoric with just a veneer of change. If that means we need to create new songs and stories about the heroes that have emerged during the strife our world has endured, or about heroes we invent, then so be it. That approach needs to carry right through their education as Weyrbrats and as Weyrlings, we’ve already made a start there but we need to keep pushing it to make sure we don’t slide backwards and I will champion that cause without rest. We cannot be complacent in this. As for the Rogue Hunters, I believe that of course they need the resources to deal with the rogue golds where they become a problem. Of particular importance I think is ensuring that the rogues don’t become entrenched anywhere beyond Malvren and try to set up new Weyrs with old ways, so I would advocate regular patrols anywhere they might attempt to get a foothold such as large natural cave structures. I think we also need to learn more about the atypicals’ ability to resist gold Command, can it be trained like a muscle? Can other colours be trained with enough exposure? If given leave to do so I would like to request that our own queens train with a volunteer rogue hunter wing, our gold Compels them to be still and they attempt to resist her all in a safe environment. After some time I would then wish to see a test between the wing that has been doing that training and a rogue hunter wing that has not. If there is no difference in the two wings’ ability to resist there is no harm done but if there is a difference then we have gained important knowledge that will help us to deal with the rogue golds.” What suggestions/ideas do you have to make Trine better?: “I mentioned education earlier on, and I think that it would be a fine idea to give candidates the opportunity to spend some of their time as informal apprentices to a craft within the Weyr. Trine is growing and has plenty of labour so we don’t need them to be at chores every hour of the day they’re not in candidate lessons, why not have them gain useful skills a couple of afternoons a sevenday? Training in a craft can be of great use to a rider - it certainly is to me! - and should a candidate not Impress then they will have the start of a trade, they could continue to pursue it in the Weyr or go elsewhere in Pern with the ability to make a good living for themselves. I understand of course that we would need to negotiate the logistics of this with our crafters, they are all busy people but I am sure we could work something out. I also think that we would be fools if we didn’t take as much advantage of the emerging Ancientcraft knowledge as possible. We already have a building dedicated to the craft but I think we would be wise to offer incentives to draw in skilled practitioners. It may cost us to recruit them but I believe it worth that cost to have first access to their innovations.” (1302) Provide your answer to these situations:Quote: 1) You are at a summit meeting of all the Weyrs of Pern as a representative of Trine. The topic currently being debated is what to do about the Rogue queens and the gathering of criminals they seem to be collecting. Reports of increasing crime along the roads and at sea makes this an urgent focus of the Weyrs. The debate gets heated quickly, some suggesting the Rogue Queens be killed on sight while others demand their riders be brought to justice before the Weyrs. Do you remain silent throughout the debate or do you lend your voice to one of the popular opinions? Or, do you have an alternative in mind? Do you demand to be heard or do you confirm your thoughts with your superior first? They fought like rats in a barrel. It was quite laughable really, these were the leaders of All the Weyrs of Pern and many of them were on their feet screaming and pointing aggressively, as red-faced as brats in a tantrum. A’nos sat with his hands composed on the table before him, his expression perfectly grave as he watched the escalating argument with steady dark eyes. While they fought, or in some cases tries to calm the fighters, he thought. He knew his leaders’ preferred stance of course - moderation over murder and so on - and he intended to present it as his own stance just as soon as he had decided how to do so, and sought their permission to intercede of course. The decision didn’t take long, and that just left the permission. Over with the other dragons Acriculeth sighed and reached for the dragons of the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader. he said in resigned tones.
A’nos received an affirmative from his dragon; the smirk he felt inside did not reach his face. In fact the next thing A’nos did was get to his feet and then jump lightly up onto the table. “Riders, comrades, please hear me!” Suddenly there were many eyes on him; the most determined were still shouting at one another but a lot of people wanted to know what on Pern a Junior Weyrleader was doing jumping up onto the table. A’nos’ heart sang at the attention; he offered a warm smile and an open gesture with upturned palms to his audience even as within him the steely cogs of his mind clicked away.
“Comrades,” he repeated, “my fellow Juniors, honoured Weyrwomen and Weyrleaders, noble Wingleaders I ask that you lend me your ears.” Somebody shouted ‘Get down!’ but A’nos pretended not to hear as he began to pick his way carefully along to the middle of the long table. “You are all people who passionately wish to protect our world and your homes, and in such passion it is easy to lose one’s temper but if we fight one another then how are we to unite and fight the Rebel Queens?”
Pause for effect, turn to address the people he had previously had his back to.
“We cannot execute the rogue golds on sight,” he continued, quickly raising a hand to forestall another surge of objection. This didn’t entirely succeed - more people were shouting at him now - but he ignored them and their untrained little voices. “Riders,” he continued, projecting his own voice - his trained Harper voice - above the hubbub, “if we hunt and kill the rogue golds like wild whers we are no better than Keller - no - we are worse for we are pretending to be better than he. I lived under his regime, I was a part of the coup that brought him down, and I do not lightly compare any action to one he would have taken.” Some of the people who had been shouting had fallen silent to consider his words but new voices were raised in their place, objecting to being compared to a murdering dictator apparently.
“It is not different,” he insisted, turning again to face a Junior from Telgar who was close by and had shouted especially loudly. “He killed people for any reason he wished without trial, without mercy, and in the end without reason. To kill a person on sight when they are not immediately threatening another’s life must be considered a crime, not justice! If we call it justice what comes next?” He paused again, turning again to look at another section of the crowd. “We are dragonriders, we are supposed to exemplify honour and in the new world we are building I believe we have become closer than ever to embodying our ideals. With such progress behind us and with such a great future ahead we cannot slide backwards, must not resort to the barbarism of old regimes! There will be justice but it must be meted out by a fair trial not by a blade raised in anger. If we strike the rogue queens down in rage then future generations will think as ill of us as we do of the ways we have left behind us.”
At that point Trine’s Weyrwoman rose to her feet, using the a brief silence A’nos had managed to create to take command of the situation. A’nos offered her a brief bow and stepped down from the table.
Acriculeth gave a snort of amusement.
A’nos smiled a little to himself as he moved back to his seat. (826)
Quote: 2) Another Weyr has come to Trine claiming that it is harbouring known criminals and vestiges of Keller's Revolutionaries, and they want them turned over. However, they provide no proof as to the guilt of these individuals but simply turning them away will sour a political relationship required to improve trade supplies to Trine's growing population. How do you handle the delegate's claims?
Junior Weyrleader L’orn of Ista Weyr appeared to be unhappy. Junior Weyrleader L’orn of Ista Weyr was often unhappy but today he was extra unhappy and accompanied by a pair of Wardens who looked grim and meaningful. Four pairs, L’orn said, revolutionaries who were known to have been loyal to Keller until the end. Exactly how this was known the brownrider had not seen fit to elucidate upon.
A’nos smiled. It was a very polite smile, indicating nothing of its razor intent. “I assure you, if such people were here I would know. I would recognise them. I was a revolutionary myself as it happens - did you not recall? I was an early conspirator in the coup that fed the Weyrs the information they needed to bring Keller down. It was my business to know his generals, his loyal lieutenants, and I am very good at what is my business so I can tell you with utmost certainty that we are harbouring no such criminals, in fact the pairs you speak of were my comrades in the struggle against Keller from within. If anything L’orn you ought to seek them out and thank them for their brave service.”
“Do you really think I’ll just take your word for it and leave?” The bulky man growled, stepping forward to poke A’nos in the chest. “I don’t trust you so far as I could throw Pharonth, you probably only turned on Keller when you saw which way the wind was blowing.”
L’orn was wrong about that, A’nos had turned on Keller when he had seen an opportunity for greater power in doing so. And stability of course, it’s difficult to enjoy life when you’re wondering if your head will be the next to roll at a paranoid madman’s whim. A’nos would never let anyone find that out of course, and nor was he concerned about the possibility that people would believe what L’orn seemed so keen to say about him. It was therefore not with fear for himself but with pure malice that he sent; For daring to touch his person with those meaty former farmer’s fingers the brownrider would meet with an unfortunate fate sooner or later, probably much later when this little incident was long forgotten and nobody would think to link him to an unfortunate leak of information or nasty rumour.
A’nos took a step backwards and rather pointedly smoothed down his shirt, still smiling at his islander counterpart. “But of course L’orn, I wouldn’t expect you to just believe me without evidence to back up my words.” That had been pointed and L’orn’s scowl indicated that he suspected as much. A’nos didn’t give him time to dwell on it however, for he swiftly continued with; “I will take you to our archives and show you the service records of the pairs in question dating back from their Impressions, through their involvement in the revolution and then the coup, and up to the present day. We hold originals as written by their superior officers, some a little scorched or torn I’m afraid but all quite legible. I will be happy to have our scribes make you any copies you feel that you require of course, I’m sure we all want this misunderstanding cleared up as soon as possible? I can also arrange interviews with their current wingleaders, and well known members of the coup if you wish.”
L’orn sneered but gave a stiff nod, they were in public and so he didn’t have much choice other than to accept. “Alright, harper, take me to your records and arrange for me to meet their wingleaders. When I have seen and heard all you care to present I will decide whether or not I am satisfied by your evidence.”
“Excellent,” A’nos smiled and clapped his hands together, “shall I arrange for refreshments for yourself and your companions?” The evidence in the records was watertight, he knew that for a fact, and only a very little of it was carefully forged due to the destruction - or non existence - of important paperwork. If L’orn would not accept good sense then A’nos was quite prepared to go over his head or around him until he found somebody prepared to listen to reason, somebody who could see that it would be bad PR for Ista to go just arresting people without evidence. That after all was the sort of thing Keller did.
through him sounds preferable to above or around,> Acriculeth put in with a hint of amusement.
A’nos smiled. No matter, he would get his way in the end and L’orn?... Well, L’orn shouldn’t have touched his nice silk shirt. (81 cool

Assistant Candidatemaster Application Name:Va’il Dragon/Colour: Lanterneth/Crimson Age:31 / 12 Position Applying for: Assistant Candidate Master!
What leadership experience do you possess?
None! Really, that all my twin brother. I was more running about with friends and getting in all sorts of trouble. Then Lanny happened and she been clutching rather frequently so I just been making sure none of the candidates peeve her off when she has a clutch on the sands. My lovely lady can be a bit of a priss.
Have you worked with youth before? In what way?
Well, I was one. I was a little s**t to, so yeah, I certainly can relate with youth. And my partner has clutched a few times, so I’m usually out on the sands making sure the winglets get out of their shells okay, and trying to make sure they don’t do anything stupid.
Why does the position interest you?
They are the future! And maybe I’m just a bit more interested because some of them are likely to impress Lan’s babies and as I said, my girl rather high maintenance especially when it comes to candidates touching her eggs. She made a candidate cry, rather not have that again.
In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of the position you're applying for?
They are kids and they do stupid stuff and well, someone got to help them muddle through the puberty and chores and becoming a decent person.
Shards I did some stupid s**t when I was a kid, looking back.
But well-rounded kids have a better chance of impressing and I certainly don’t want anyone hatching in-betweening let alone Lan’s so yeah, might be a bit persona but I’m helping them grow to be better individuals so they go on to be better riders and make everyone proud.
How would you deal with the following situations (answer the ones that apply to the position you are interested in):
2) One of your wards, a Candidate, is causing problems in class. They possess a traditional attitude and are vocal about how they will Impress a metallic dragon then 'right' the Weyr's wayward path. What do you do?
Do we really have this problem? Well, we probably do, I certainly recall some people in the trade caravans proclaiming they were going to grand things. Think it is story time.
First I would ask the kid to please quiet down, because they are disrupting the class. If they didn’t listen, welp, I’m going to pull them out of class to have a one on one talk about their disruptive behavior and that they are going to get some extra chores for being disruptive enough to get pulled from class. They are wasting my time and they are wasting their classmate’s time.
Second, I would talk to them about why they wanted a metallic dragon, why they are so traditional, and why they think the Weyr’s on a wayward path. Why are they in Trine if they think everything is horribly wrong? They don’t have to be here, they have two feet don’t they?
I’m not too sure how well I would get through to them. Lanny a breeding crimson. Got to keep trying don’t I? But yeah, I have a feeling this kids going to get a lot of chores for being disruptive and I’m certainly going to make sure they know they are getting the chores for being disruptive and not because they are traditionalist.
Probably not the most desire path, but the kid got to make his or her own decision, all I can do is guide them and give them information. Can’t make them listen or absorb it, not matter how much I want to cram it down their ears.
4) A Candidate's family has come calling, attempting to take back their child from the Weyr and the Candidate does not want to leave. Do you intervene and talk to the individuals involved or remain at a distance?
That is a tough one. I mean, I never really thought about it because my parents were pretty lenient about letting me do what I want till I figured out it was a really bad idea. Trouble could be my middle name.
First, I guess is to see if the physically try to take the candidate from the dorm room or not. Physical violence is never the answer and that is going to make me get involved right quick.
I think the first encounter, I really shouldn’t be involved unless it gets physical or emotional manipulative. They are the individual’s parents they have the right to be concern about them and candidacy is hard and dangerous. I certainly think they have a right to express these concerns to their child, but the kid is here and such it was an inform decision of both parties and we need them.
I guess I would wait and see if I needed to get involved. Maybe a candidate got mauled in a hatching, does happen, and the parents are concern but in all, it is the candidates choice to go or not. I’m just around to make sure it is respected.
