The forest offered shade and a cool breeze, despite the threat of elves with deadly aim and spiders with mammoth appetites. Lex enjoyed the steady trot Burgie had taken through these woods, and pulled out a carrot for the beast and a bit of cheese for himself. The cheese was soon dropped, though, when a hulking mass of fur and legs began to charge them, fangs dripping with sickly pale venom.

Burgie was hitched to a small iron ring outside the cavern, where Lex found many a discarded sword or spear, all rusted and covered in years of dust and grime. The green clad apprentice stuck out his tongue in childish disgust, then dropped the act when he saw the bodies of the fallen knights.
Oh dear, oh dear oh dear. That wasn't good. He had to wonder what did them in - and what was that reverberating echo that sounded through the labyrinth?
Lex's time to ponder the deaths and the mysterious noise was cut short and both questions answered for him. A roar sounded, and a glance behind his shoulder along with the suddenly increasing temperature in the immediate vicinity told him that he'd encountered nothing other than a Balrog. He fled for his life, dropping food along the way, his rucksack having come undone from the initial jerk of his sprint. Oh god, oh god why.
He made it out, sack feeling much lighter and panting. Somehow, he'd escaped the flaming death beast. Chalk that up to the small miracles.

Still jittery with excitement, fear, and adrenaline, Alexei scaled the rest of the mountaintop with ease. He was elated to finally get here, to finally see the artifact so close that he could just reach out and touch it.
In his excitement, he gave a great WHOOP of victory, and was faced with instant regret as snow, ice, and rock cascaded downward and nearly swept him off the mountain.

But he survived, and here lay the Tabard. Emblazoned with a griffin and golden filigree. The garment was quickly rolled up and tucked into his now fixed and clamped shut rucksack. He was headed home.
