Investigation

It was about midnight. The streets were quieter, though they were never truly silent. The lights in the windows would blink out in the residences, the most normal homes in Destiny City. Probably home to happy families, readying themselves for sleep and dreams.

The park was empty, a seemingly hauntingly gorgeous scene to the artistically inclined. It was relatively well known that the terrorists would frequent these areas in the evenings. The terrorists really didn't bother her much.

At the sidewalk by a picnic area stood a girl in a black sleeveless trench coat, hands thrust in her pockets as she looked over the vicinity. To most people, being out and about at this time of day would have been considered late. However, the girl's schedule was a bit inverted from most other people. Perhaps it was because she wasn't afraid of the terrorist activities that seemed to consume the night that made her more willing to dwell during that time.

If anything, this was approximately the noon of her daily schedule.

By her side was a sizable red husky with a black collar. There was no leash upon the canine, since those pesky leash-laws weren't really enforced much in the middle of the evening. His black nose was twitching something fierce, seeming to take in all the scents he possibly could.

"...I hope you find something, Ari..." the girl murmured as she began to drift down the sidewalk at a casual pace. The sky was lovely, dotted with stars all across the deep indigo blanket surrounding the world. If there had been less buildings in this city, then the sky would have been lovelier still.

Brushing her long hair back over her shoulder, more so out of habit than necessity, her crimson eyes scanned the area again. She was looking for something, but what was not nearly as evident.

As they passed bench, the girl noticed some sort of unnatural protrusion coming out of the ground. Clearly someone had left it behind some other time.

The dog, who had been silent the whole time, soon started growling in a low warning tone. His head lowered and his teeth were bared as his green eyes narrowed in the protrusion's direction.

The girl's crimson eyes flickered back to her dog. "Shizuka ni shite" was the command given in Japanese, which the dog obediently followed. Though his lips were still curled and his stance was defensive, he no longer made any noise.

The girl brushed her fingers through her hair again before stepping forward to take a look at the object.

"...a dufflebag... a rather large one too..." Any curious instincts were typically suppressed, since it was unwise to provoke unknown matters at this time of the day. She could have sought out a name, perhaps return it to the owner in an act of kindness and good will.

However, none of things occurred.

"...I think we have a lead this time..." With a heaved sigh, she uttered out in Japanese yet again "Houtte" before continuing her stroll. Ari, in all of his obedience, seemed to snort out towards the bag before turning away to follow the girl.

The pair continued in silence, the animal's tail swaying behind him as they moved. However, they would be back.

They found a lead. With something that promising, it guaranteed at least a follow up visit.

Parents

After attending a session of classes, both martial arts and scholarly, spending an evening with Ari investigating matters throughout the city, Sadoko deserved to go back home. The red husky was getting anxious, more than likely because he was hungry. He was a big dog and had an appetite to match. Her own stomach had been filled by a stop at a local fast food place open in the wee hours of the morning. It wasn't exactly gourmet, but if she ate like a rich person all the time, she would go broke too quickly.

She walked down the hallway of the condo at about 5 am in the morning, Ari at her side with his long swaying tail. Not many people were up at that hour, let alone wandering the hallways to their homes. However, the girl knew that the elderly couple that lived on the same floor as her were typically up around that hour. She never made a fuss of saying hello to them, and they never bothered her. However, as she passed their place, she did offer a humble nod of acknowledgment. Once at her door, she unlocked the door and slipped in.

The lights were all on, but that wasn't anything unusual. Sadoko always turned the lights on when she woke up, and they would stay on until she went to bed.

"I'm home!" she called out, glancing about as her dog trundled around, sniffing the furniture as if to check that nothing of his had been tampered with while he was away. There were two birds in their own separate cages that flapped their wings, perhaps from being startled after much silence, or perhaps a display of affection. However, aside from the flapping of wings, no other greetings seemed to sound.

"...I guess D isn't home yet..." she murmured as she pulled off her shoes, sliding them into their designated spot in the corner.

By this time, the husky had seated himself in front of his food dish, expectantly waiting for it to be filled up.

"Ah, I see you are hungry!" Rounding her way to the kitchen, she swung a cabinet door open and soon enough scooped out a cup of dog kibble. Making her way back, she put the food in the bowl, but immediately stated "Itadakimasu."

The animal lowered his head as if bowing and let out a small wuff sound before looking eagerly to the girl.

With a smile and a pat to the canine's head, she stated "Hai!"

Now that he had obtained the proper permission, he shoved his snout into the kibble and began to chow down.

With a faint laugh, the girl rounded her way to another room. She knocked on the door, pausing as if waiting to be invited in, before entering the room.

She sat herself upon a lounge chair, sitting upright and proper. A subdued smile managed to find its way to her lips before she opened her mouth and spoke in her native tongue.

"Good morning Mother and Father. You seem to be well..."

There was a pause.

"My day has been quite good. Class has been challenging this semester, but last I checked I have an A. So unless I mess up on the final, I should still come out with a good grade."

She sighed a bit before mentioning "I managed to find a lead tonight. I am hoping that I will be able to get more than a dead end this time. I promise... I will be careful about how I approach it."

The girl smiled before leaning towards a nearby table and kissing the outside of two simple bronzed urns.

"I love you. Mother. Father."

The girl stood up, bowing forward slightly before exiting the room, closing the door behind her. It had been the ritual for a bit more than two years, talking to what was left of her parents just before she went to bed.

If tomorrow was anything like today, it would be another long evening.

D

It was late afternoon. With summer approaching, the days were longer, which meant the sun was still up. However, none of that breached the heavy curtains Sadoko had upon every window in her condo. The daylight couldn't bother her this way as she literally slept the day away.

With a groggy humming sound, the girl rolled in her bed to the side. A tanned arm was draped across her midsection, almost coiling around her like a serpent.

"Good evening, m'dear!" She felt a kiss accented with cool metal graze her neck before she could acknowledge the greeting. Her lithe body rolled facing towards the one sharing the bed with her.

"Hello D."

Before her was a tanned slender man with graceful features. He had brown eyes, but it was rare for anybody other than her to see his true eye color. He apparently preferred wearing cosmetic contacts to make his eyes look blood red. His long hair was dark, save for a few red streaks added in for flavor, spreading upon the sheets in crimped waves. His face was adorned with metal.

The girl reached out, touching the man's cheek in an affectionate manner.

He leaned his face towards the offending hand, planting another kiss upon her before lifting himself out of the bed. He brushed his hair back over his shoulders as he sauntered over to the vanity, sitting himself in the dainty chair. He puckered his lips and posed for the mirror, as if it was some sort of ritual for the day.

"Do you have any plans for the evening, Sadie?" he inquired with subtle interest as he continued to check himself out in a vain display.

The girl had sat herself upright, but she had not bothered to get out of the bed yet.

"I found a lead last night. I am going to see what I can find tonight. I don't have any classes since it is the weekend."

As the girl spoke, the man opened up a drawer upon the vanity and pulled out the little container which held his contacts while he slept. With ease, he put them in, masking his brown eyes from the world and displaying false crimson eyes for all to see. His interest was not very apparent with his lacking reactions.

"I don't see why you keep doing this to yourself, m'dear."

D had pulled out a large makeup kit, and as they continued to talk, he casually began to paint his face.

Placing a hand upon her own cheek, Sadoko asked "'Why I keep doing this to myself?' What do you mean?" She knew what he meant, they had this conversation many times. However, feigning a bit of innocence wasn't a bad thing when it came to your roommate.

"You know quite well what I am talking about, Sadie!" he snipped as he flamboyantly accented his eye makeup with a flourish. "These pointless investigations to unsolved mysteries! Why not let sleeping dogs lie?"

Promptly standing herself up, she declared "If you let sleeping dogs lie, then you will have a fat, lazy dog."

D shook his head at the logic. "...don't ever change, m'dear... it keeps my life interesting!" He leaned back to face her with a toothy grin. "...could you be a doll and help me figure out what to do with my hair today?"

Sadly, this was a daily chore. Perhaps it was the consequences of living with a Drag Queen. There was no use in complaining or trying to avoid it. She simply took up her spot behind the man, combing her fingers through his ratty hair as he put on his favorite shade of black lipstick.

"I'll see what I can do."
