The Alps were clear and clean and cold tonight. Hachi could see a scant number of hikers, but did not see any who were grievously injured.
Pity. Well, perhaps not, for them. He waved, though it was pointless, and moved on.

He found the entrance to a cave without much difficulty. Perhaps he'd search here - a soul might be trapped, correct?

He couldn't find one there - it was eerily empty - but he'd keep searching in the same manner regardless. The mountainside was full of caves to tempt adventurous spelunkers.

The cave system Hachi had just found was a particularly large one - he could see a brook running through. And by the brook was a body, bent over at a strange angle. And by the body was...oh! Oh, dear.

After a quick trip back to the Vocivus - ah, wasn't that enriching? - Hachi returned to the search. He'd go through the Alps again, he thought: they were lovely this time of year, and there were always more caves in those mountains.

What could Hachi say? He liked the adventurous sorts that spent their time here.
And it seemed they liked him, too - this soul came right up to him. Ah, she was both a hermit and an ascetic. She was old and ready to accept her death. Wise, he could say. Nevertheless, he knew exactly how to guide her soul home. She could sleep easy now.

He returned to Earth this time on another mountain range. Here was Mount Fuji, and it was startlingly familiar. Hachi paid that no mind, though. He was here for one purpose only: to make friends with more souls who needed guidance.
And a soul did come up to him immediately - but it escaped again with haste. Good-bye, he wanted to tell it, but, well, he knew he'd be searching for it now that he knew it was here.

For some reason the air here smelled distinctly more salty. Hachi didn't mind it, though - it was lovely as any other mountain range he'd been through. Of course he was not especially experienced in this, but that was that.

Another thing that came with the job was the strange loneliness of looking out at people without any of them looking back. Hachi wanted to shout at them - they weren't alone, either! No one could be alone.
Well, no one could be alone in the vocivus. Perhaps it was different here.
