A split second after he saw the runes dim, alarm spread across his features. A split second before the initial arrow struck him, he swung his sword down, not at Chel but at the ground, and tightened his grip. As the energy of the charge drove him back and threatened to knock him down, the sword embedded itself deeper into the earth until he found his legs and fought against the many arrowheads eating at his shield, stopping himself form falling over in short order.

He coughed with a wince when the energy finished its discharge and was surprised to find that while it hurt, it didn't hurt. On the contrary, Owain was happy to report that they were still going strong as far as his barrier was concerned. Jack was more than happy to get used to that sort of news from now on.

"Speaking of dance, I hope you know how to. It's a requisite to our fancy date." He spoke like it was an inevitability.

Smirking, he swung the sword out, and a barrage of dirt clods dislodged from trench he'd carved flew at Chel. Jack moved after it, hoping the distraction would leave him enough opportunity to dig his weapon deep into her shield.

Chel shrieked as the full weight of a huge a** sword impacted with her already agitated shoulder and pinned her to the ground. It was an ugly sound, one of real weakness.

"I'm makin' sure your dress is so short your balls show," she spat back, spasming lightly under the sword. She was less panicked about dancing or fancy outfits than she was for letting someone- even Jack- control her appearance. It was the one real shred of power she had in her life, and to hand it over to someone terrified her.

But that was why she'd bet it for him to put on a dress.

Between heavy breaths she continued, "I'll take a million pictures and stick them all on twitter."

< You are losing, quite badly. In fact there is a 95.92039% chance that he will smash your shield, considering you are so pathetic as to expose your shoulder. >

Her reaction reminded him that this was her bad shoulder, but Chel had asked him not to go easy on her; not taking advantage of the weakness would just insult her, even as Owain echoed fragments of his discomfort at causing her this much distress. The sword pressed down harder as he leaned over her with raised brows at the threats.

"You're going to wear high heels," he countered. "Ones that I pick out while we go shopping for some nice s**t."

Chel was wheezing and kicking at his shins for release, actually tearing up as a reaction to the pain, but he was right, she didn't tell him to stop. If he stopped it had to be of his own volition, not because she said so.

The threat of shopping had less impact than she thought. Jack could just pick things out and she could sit there. It wasn't like she hadn't done it a thousand times for Chris when he had to decide between navy and slightly darker navy baseball caps.

She desummoned her bow and lost the charge to summon it in her free hand, shoving the grip in front of her. It was a weakly powered shot because her shield was flickering, but the joy of an energy bow was that you didn't have to pull a string or aim. The arrow shot right into the underside of his chin, and she hoped it was enough to relent his grip. "You're gettin' some pink frilly s**t. I'll get Abbi t'pick."

He bit his tongue as his head knocked back and grimaced, backing off. The point had been made at any rate, and with her shield flickering, he didn't want to actually cause her shoulder more harm. (Chel wasn't Peyton, after all.)

"Pink? You really think I want to see pink and frilly?" he asked with a scowl. No, he'd seen enough of that with Lina. Pink and frilly said underaged and childish. Jack swatted one of her legs with the flat of his blade. "I want you dressed up, but not like a ******** Barbie doll."

"The pink ..." she said slowly, watching his movements, "is for you!"

She borrowed some of his dramatic flair and whipped her legs around in a motion she'd used on the horseman earlier; kicking through the gap in his legs, then spreading her legs and spinning in a way that tripped him, using his height against him.

Chel was panting by the time she reached her goal, but she lunged with the tenacity of a wolf and managed to roll onto his body, arrow pointed at his face. As she pulled the arrow back her shoulder screamed in protest and the arrow went sideways, barely leaving the ground next to Jack's head singed. A great sigh went through her body, disappointed in her shot and disappointed in the results she was getting. This was what she'd been afraid of; years at Deus wasted, only to have to relearn everything again.

Truly it was a dramatic sight as the giant was felled.

He struggled even as the arrow barely avoided striking him in the face, but it was being pinned that seemed to make something nasty and primal inside of him click. Chel's cry of pain barely registered, and her sigh was interrupted as with gathered energy, Jack thrashed his legs to throw her off.

It didn't particularly matter if it worked or not. Following her lead, he desummoned and then resummoned his weapon (which had been knocked out of his grasp in the ensuing tussle), nevermind the charge. The odd thing, though, was that the residual energy the sword still held anyway, the hum he'd heard at the beginning of battle, seemed to peak for a moment. As the sword was pushed upward, he couldn't predict that nearly at the same time, the energy focused itself into a condensed projectile that shot through the slot between its blades.

The force of the tiny bullet pushed her off of him, onto the ground. She felt her shield shatter and it was worse than usual because all of the cuts and scrapes and bruises it had been sustaining from the mission were now open, some were bleeding, but they weren't healing anymore. She couldn't feel her left arm.

But then all at once it snapped away, the wards kicked in and her shield was reverberating back in place. Tenebrae made a small tutting noise.

She remained on the ground, because she wanted a moment to mourn the loss. It hurt, actually. It hurt her pride a great deal, because she was supposed to be the sun, she was sunshine and she hadn't been that for some time now. She knew it was foolish to think her bow skills would come back in a single battle, but there had been a slim part of her that had hoped with the bracelet off, everything would return to the way it was. The scars would magically fade, the pain would go away, she wouldn't have to cling to Jack's backside in the middle of the night after crying her eyes out in a bathtub.

Of course then she wouldn't have Jack, and she would take a thousand more scars before that happened.

There had also been something foreign in Jack's eyes the moment he fired, a kind of darkness she had yet to coax out of him when they talked. It scared her, maybe, but more so it excited her. There was some part of Jack she still didn't know."I love you" wasn't the end at all, as she'd initially believed. On the contrary it created a tightrope walking sort of balance act out of being chained to someone so mysterious.

"I didn't know Owain could do that," she said quietly, clearly defeated for the moment. Her eyes were open, but they were fluttering.

A beat, and then the weapon disappeared and Jack seemed to sink into the ground. "I didn't either," he breathed, as stunned as she was.

He wasn't nearly as winded as Chel, however, and it wasn't long before he was pushing himself back up. His torso in particular still was aching from taking a charge so up close and personal, and he rubbed at it gingerly.

"Dampeners got you covered, right?" It was a stupid question, of course they did. But Chel looked so defeated on the ground--this wasn't the triumphant return she had been looking forward to. Hell, Jack had been sure that in spite of her lack of weapon for so long, she would have been kicking his a** in no time. He wouldn't be apologetic for beating her, but he could sympathize with the frustration of not at least being able to put up just as hard a fight.

Chel closed her eyes for only a moment, letting herself absorb everything about the situation.

Then she sat up with an overemphasized groan, rolling her shoulders, trying to get her body to move for him. "I'm good. Was just that second when they didn't have me that sucked." She rolled her eyes and pushed herself up; always push past it. She was on her feet now, moving towards him. "Alright, so what're you gonna paint me up in, Hawthorn. Might as well get yer gloat on now."

She stumbled with one of her steps, but she quickly recovered in a motion so fast she thought he might not catch it. "It's gonna make my cleavage huge, ain't it."

He watched her try to mask the aftereffects and then got to his feet. Whether she liked it or not, Chel was roped in by means of her arm being pulled around him and his around hers to help steady her and take some of the weight off her bad side.

"We'll worry about that later." There was little point in gloating; his actions had spoken for him. "I'm taking you to the infirmary so we can both get fresh bandages. Probably wasn't a good idea to fight so soon after Athens."

And whether Chel liked it or not, she leaned heavily into his side. "What? Yer goin' to the infirmary too? What a coincidence. This s'great, means we can walk together," she chided sarcastically.

To his latter comment, she rather wistfully said, "I was excited."

He scoffed at her sarcasm and rubbed her side gently. "You got off a few good hits," Jack consoled her. "Even a charge. And your tactics were...something else."

"Don't pity me, shithead." She scowled at him, despising that sometimes her face was too open to read for her to diguise anything properly. "You kicked my a** fair and square. My tactics ain't s**t."

She just wished it hadn't hurt her pride so much. "Hey later when I'm not like," she gestured to her entirety, "I gotta talk t'you 'bout an idea I had." She smirked and said, "Maybe over dinner."

"Wasn't pity, just stating facts." But he was curious to know what new idea had crawled its way into Chel's head; he had a feeling it wasn't small.

"While we're on the subject, what kind of food do you like? Something more specific than breakfast," Jack added. "Actually, don't even say breakfast foods at all, something else."
