Hvergelmir shook her head emphatically. "It's nothing to be ashamed of," she promised. "We all go through tough times, when it's difficult to find our way. If you've been there," Hvergelmir said, "if you've been angry, or grieving, or afraid, then it helps you to understand what people like that might be going through. Never be afraid to be human; if you hold yourself above someone you're trying to help, you're saying they exist on your sufferance. That they can never be what you are. Hope is a fragile thing -- the smallest fear can kill it." She smiled encouragingly. "So believe in yourself. And believe in the people you're trying to help. I believe in you."

"Never be afraid to be human... I like that." Megrez smiled and sniffed. "Hver, thank you for believing in me, even after what I did for you. I'm going to do my best to reform, to help others. I'll believe in them. I have to. I've always believed every little bit helps, and that applies to more than dusting youma. It applies to believing in others too. I'll... be the egg. The shell, too," she said, hoping that Hver would catch the metaphor. She stood up. "I feel... tired, but I feel better. Thank you again."

"Of course," Hvergelmir nodded, watching Megrez get to her feet. She studied the movement of fluff around her in response to the notion. "And your, ah . . . your friends?" she asked, gesturing to indicate one of the animated little poof-balls.

"Oh, them!" Megrez's smile widened despite herself. "They're called puffskis. They lived on my planet long ago. I think they can travel from world to world, somehow, and that's how they got here." A puffski bumped Megrez's ankle with a "buu." "I think they're getting a little fidgety. I should walk them for a bit more before I finally go home."
