Illuminated Apparition

Unsettled by their conversation Allie laid her ears back, flicking her tail in apprehension as she considered the possibilities. Kalona probably ate foals for fun, she'd be a snack! But she was on the small side, a bit leggy still and lean... They'd probably think she was stringy! Not even worthy of breakfast! Though maybe with Rose, together they'd rank an actual meal. But she didn't really want to find out, wanted to be as far away from 'breakfast' as she could manage it. And no, being dinner or dessert didn't sound any better. "Super creepy... Them and Skinwalkers... The creepiest..."

And she wanted nothing to do with them.

The grullo filly gave a somber nod in agreement with Rose's statement. Truth be told, Allie really didn't much care how they managed to get away from Kalona, running or hiding or swimming, anything would work. Some of her friends had wings, weren't they lucky? They could at least be sure to get away from most of the Skinwalkers, though she had heard there were bats and scary birds that were just as bad as the bears and cats and wolves... Maybe it was just as dangerous in the air as it was on land... Maybe she should wish on a star to be a Mer instead! They didn't have scary ocean beasts, right?

Jolted out of her musings, the filly shook herself back to the present.

"Well I guess with a big enough hidey-place in the brambles, you could bring friends... And extra snacks, just in case. Maybe a basket or a bucket with water? Then you could really stay awhile, in case they were lurking outside waiting for you." She grinned and bounced on her hooves as well, pleased at Rose's approval of the plan. "A party would be great!"

Wait until her friends and family heard about this, it was going to be great! In high spirits, Allie eagerly watched Rose pace toward the maple tree she had decided to climb.

"Yay! Go for it Rosie!" She giggled. "You can do it!"

Or, erm, maybe not? Maybe tree climbing took a lot more practice... At the declaration, Allie blinked slowly, then gave a soft giggle. "No, I guess not. Not today then? Lots of tree climbing practice. Ok, so, a back up plan... Maybe a different strategy altogether, because if you can't climb that tree then there is no way I can!"

She gave a thoughtful sigh, snatching a mouthful of grass and chewing thoughtfully. "Maybe we should learn to swim, really well? I'm not sure Skinwalkers could swim, so it might be a good way to get away from them, if you had to? I mean, I guess a kalona could learn how to swim, but if you were really good at it you could out-swim them to a place of safety."

Rose laughed a little in spite of herself. “Yeah, maybe we just need better trees to practice on.” She said flashing her new friend a lopsided smile. “Or something.” Truthfully she didn’t know if she’d be able to climb any trees ever, not unless all their boughs were low and arranged in such a way that she could go up them like stepping stones. That would defeat the purpose of using a tree to get away from an attacker though. If she and Allie could just walk up the tree so could the kalona or skinwalker.

Rose was pleased that Allie was still coming up with more plans since she herself was starting to run out of ideas. Swimming away. Now there was an idea. Rose could just imagine it, the two of them diving into the water and paddling away into some secret cave and out of harm’s way. Then they could have lunch in the cave and tell lots of stories. Yes, swimming sounded like a grand idea indeed. The only trouble was Rose wasn’t much of a swimmer. If she waded out too deep while taking a bath she could paddle herself back but that was a slow and awkward progression. From the sounds of it Allie wasn’t better off in the water than Rose was but that was easy enough to fix.

“We should start that practice right now!” She exclaimed bouncing off the ground with her forelegs alone. “I know the perfect spot too! Me and my mama go there sometimes, it’s safe and not too deep.” Her tail began to sway back and forth eagerly in anticipation of playing in the water with Allie. Even if it was training for a future escape it could still be fun and it sounded like a perfect way to spend the rest of the day.

“C’mon Allie! It’ll be great!” She encouraged bounding over to the other filly. “There’s this pond just over that way.” She nodded over her shoulder in the general direction that she had first come from. “And when we get tired of swimming we can dry off in the sun and eat these berries from these bushes that grow close by. They’re so sweet. Sweeter than anything else. And then after that we can go swimming again and keep going until it’s dark and then we can tell each other scary stories until we decide to go to sleep! Doesn’t that sound great?”

In her excitement Black Rose was forgetting that they both had families that would certainly worry if they both went missing all night. It wasn’t that she didn’t care about how frightened her mother might be if she was suddenly gone but simply a lack of understanding how quickly she would start to worry.

"Better trees would work." Allie nodded thoughtfully. "Low branches that we could walk on, at first? Those wouldn't be much good when actually trying to get rid of a Skinwalker... But for you to get the hang of things at first? I think something like that would be a good place to start, anyway."

She tilted her head with a soft little hum, considering the trees and then glancing at the area around them. Trees might take some work, so they'd need a back up plan. The bramble bush would work in a pinch, kinda like a clubhouse or a fort to fall back to in times of trouble. But Allie certainly felt like learning to swim would work, after all she didn't think the catwalkers would like the water... And the wolves and foxes probably wouldn't be very good. But bearwalkers? Had anyone ever seen a bearwalker swim?

Perhaps she should see if there was a cave system they could use. To hide in? To trap the Skinwalkers in? Would that even work? She'd have to ask her family and the wanderers if they knew of any places that could be used as strongholds or prisons for unsuspecting walkers. That would be good to know.

"Practice would be good!" Allie brightened at Rose's enthusiasm, bouncing on her hooves and flicking her tail happily. "Practice makes perfect, right? So if we learn to swim perfectly, we'll be able to get away from those nasty walkers. Maybe we need a secret base to hide in too, that would be the coolest!"

Man, her brother and sister were gonna be mad when they found out all the neat things she was doing with her new best friend. Not that she'd tell them all the things, because some of them were secret. Secret best friend things. Club secrets. Something. Maybe they needed a code word? No, not unless they got a third person... Then you totally need a code word or a secret greeting. Allie just knew. But a secret base would be really neat, a good place to start.

Allie was tugged from her musings, ears pitching forward as Rose mentioned the perfect spot for them to practice. A lake or a pond near by that Rose was familiar with? That sounded good. And the sunning sounded nice, Allie always liked to drowse in the sun on lazy afternoons. And berries were her favorite, so this place sounds like the best!

"Swimming and berries and scary stories at night? That's great!" She grinned, bouncing closer to her knew -and totally best- friend. "I know one about an old haunted tree that my cousin told me. He wasn't really supposed to because it's soooo spooky, it'll be great!"

"Allie!" Came the distant call. "Allie, time to come home!"

The filly turned at the sound, recognizing the mare's voice. That was her older sister, Firefly.

"Awwww bramblebushes... Is it that time already?" She pouted softly. "Sorry Rosie, I guess I can't today. That's my big sister Firefly and she can be scary if she's mad! I gotta go or I'll be in big trouble. But listen! We'll meet here at the hedge tomorrow, ok? Around, high sun? Then we can swim and eat berries and stuff all afternoon. I'll see you tomorrow, ok?"

With a gleeful grin and a playful shoulder-jostle, the filly spun away with a final laugh. "Don't forget! Tomorrow at the hedge! Bye Rosie!"

And then she scampered home as fast as her hooves could take her, because she couldn't wait for tomorrow."
