Kiki watched him warily. What would he do with the hot water? Why did he need hot water? She didn’t understand, and that made her clutch the knife harder, fearfully.
She screamed as the man proceeded to pour the water on her mother. ”What are you doing!” she shouted at him, charging towards him with the knife. She didn’t know how to use a knife. She didn’t know what she would do with it. She only knew that it was sharp, and could hurt the man and that he was hurting her mother!
”You said you’d save her!” she shrieked, ”You’re just hurting her more!”

Ruelash moved quickly with reflexes honed over many hunts and many scraps. He grabbed her arms, squeezing them tightly until she dropped the…
Knife?! Well s**t. This kid really did have spirit. A dangerous and stupid amount of it.
”Look.” he said, ”She’s alive, ain’t she?” he held her as she struggled, shaking her a little to disorient her. It wasn’t hard to hold a child - they were so weak and small - but if she had gotten that knife in him… Well, Ruelash was not underestimating her.
”Ya, the water hurts her.” he explained, though he didn’t know why. ”It burns her. It also cleans out the bad stuff in the wound, so…” he made an ugly face, ”’less ye want her to die ‘cause of that…” he shoved her away, ”Don’t bother me.” he turned back to what he was doing, ”Shaddup and do as you’re told.”

Kiunyki began to cry as her knife fell to the ground and as the man’s hands began to really hurt her. When he flung her to the ground, she crawled away fearfully, curling up against a tent and nursing her new bruises, vivid and dark against the pale yellow of her wrists.
They hurt. The bad man had hurt her too. He had her Mama’s spear. He had her knife. He was probably lying about helping her mother, but what else could kiki do? There was nothing else she could do.
So, she sat there, watching and whimpering, as the bad man did whatever horrible things he did to her mother.

Ruelash wondered why he was giving the little brat another chance, but the truth was, he knew why. He’d always been a sucker for women, and especially the young and cute ones, who looked up at you with big, innocent eyes. He could be angry with them, he could growl and grump and cuss, but he couldn’t hurt them. Something inside him stopped him from going that far.
The kid was just scared he thought, placating the annoyance fueled anger inside him, She’s just scared an’ she’s gonna grow up to be some kinda warrior someday, thats for sure. Which was neat - women had to learn how to fight. There were a lot of bad things in the world, and…
Ruelash confused himself. Right. The crazy dumb lady.
He washed her wounds and his stitching equipment. Seeing the woman twitch whenever the hot water hit her was satisfying in a way that helped to ease his annoyance a little, as was pulling the loaded needle through the skin. Washing, salve, stitches, bandages - all led up to healing her. For the kid.
Only for the kid, was he doing this.
When he was done, he looked back at the child, his hands covered - yet again - with her mother’s blood.
”There.” he said, offering her a smile, ”Y’see? She’s gonna live. Was that so hard, shuttin’ up?”

Kiki watched him work, despairingly, looking away as he began to sew her mama up. She couldn’t watch this anymore. She couldn’t do anything. She’d failed her mama, and it was her fault that her mama would die.
She looked up, vaguely, as Ruelash spoke. For a moment, a brief flutter of hope rose inside her, like a kipepwa ascending to the canopy. Her mother… would live?
She grimaced cynically. Of course she wouldn’t. ”Liar.” she accused, looking away again.

Ruelash shrugged. ”I don’t lie.” he said, as he proceeded to go about the business of the camp, ignoring the girl and the woman for now. And why not? He didn’t need to care about them anymore.
