"That ********' sucks," Chel told her, noting the wrinkling nose and the withdrawn attitude. She wouldn't pester it anymore if Peyton didn't want to talk about it. She didn't like prying at others' business when they wanted to keep secrets. With her precarious position, Chel also couldn't say anything particularly encouraging, because she knew nothing of the situation and didn't want to insinuate sides.
Leaving it at that, Chel gave her attentions back to the battle. Peyton was thoroughly kicking her a**, and when Chel saw the runes on her rounded daggers light up, she knew it was over. Peyton had a charge, and she knew how to use it.
With only one dagger left, Chel had no defenses for the other sun hunter and the wear was starting to show on her body. It was so frustrating having such a strange out of body experience; having to watch Peyton kick her a**. Chel had every technical skill in the book, her body moved with the correct reactions, but her daggers weren't a bow and her shield wasn't the impenetrable barrier it used to be. It was still holding out for now, but Tenebrae whispered in her mind, < For how long? >
Yet she still took enough steps backwards to escape Peyton's barrage of hits, flagging the girl until she could pivot on her backfoot and kick her leg out in a wide arc across Peyton's chest. It was stupid to put her leg out as a target, but she hoped it would knock Peyton off her game enough to buy time to get the second dagger.

"Yeah," she agreed, voice an odd mix of resignation and irritation. "It does." She would have liked to have been over it at this point, but she'd always been the sort to harbor grudges, and she'd loved him. It was a strong emotion to turn around. The kick would have left Chel open if it hadn't connected and sent the smaller girl back a about a yard. Peyton stumbled, had to work to keep her balance, and was quick to sink down into something defensive before launching back into a counter attack of her own. She was quick enough to catch the other girl before she had time to shift from offensive to defensive, taking advantage of what little opening remained. A solid right hook brought the hard ring of one dagger in against the side of Chel's ribs, and the blade followed it, cutting across the other Sun's body in a stinging line. A left followed, similar but lower. This one aimed for a hip, angled up across Chel's torso. The assault continued, blow for blow, for as long as she was able to advance. HP: 35 DMG: 17

The hits battered her body left and then ricocheted right, and she hissed an annoyance, a frustration, an acceptance. She wasn't the hunter she'd once been. Maybe would ever be.
"But hey- single life man!" she exclaimed positively, holding her shoulder as she recovered. "Getta ******** who you want, no chains no more- s'pretty ********' sweet too." She gave Peyton a smile to assure her that she knew no consolation or advantage would replace the sucky feeling, but at least she was trying.
The dagger fell again, wrestled from her grip by Peyton's blows. Chel should have called mercy or uncle, but she wasn't that kind of person. She'd fight until Tenebrae told her her FEAR shield was smashed.

That remained to be seen, but Peyton didn't say as much. She'd never been in this position before. Noah had been her first serious relationship, the first boy she'd slept with. Sex no longer seemed like a big deal anymore, at least not like it had been. America was even encouraging her to go out and have some fun, where fun meant sleeping around. It was a bit much to wrap her head around still. But she'd return that smile, becuase she did appreciate Chel trying to make her feel better. The toe of her boot kicked under the fallen blade of one dagger, and she'd give it a little kick up at the other girl. Not an attack, just a bid to arm her again. "How's that shield holdin' up?" "Just fine," she lied, and it was evident by the pulsation of her chest, heaving breaths in and out too fast. Runic shields were s**t, and she knew it.
But Chel had a tenacity in her, and she stabbed the dagger back against Peyton's, meeting the metal and holding her in place. "Yours?" she taunted.

The edge of Pey's lips ticked up at the lie--and she knew it was a lie. She could see it in the heavy breaths, that quick rise and fall of her chest. She had to admire Chel, the girl was determined, stubborn, tenacious. All wonderful qualities in a Sun, or even just in general.
The returned taunt was met with a smirk, and she pushed back against the runic dagger, using way more strength then that petite body should have been capable of. "Oh I'm just peachy, never better."
A second, harder shove freed up her dagger, and Peyton cocked that tiny fist back unthinkingly. The banter, the fierce determination, it was all so wonderfully familiar, so easy to slip up, to forget who she was fighting.
She was bringing her fist back in, knuckles aimed for the other girl's jaw as Warrick's voice cut through the calm, but it was too late. They hit, much harder than she had intended, and Peyton's eyes went wide as the taller Sun reeled backwards from the force before dropping to the ground as if her strings had been cut. "s**t."
Chel wasn't Jack. She didn't know the rules. She didn't play the same games. 's**t!"

Chel laughed, finding the banter good-natured. Her vision was blurring here and there, but it wasn't a malicious kind of daze. It was two suns hashing out a good spar.
The push got her stumbling over her feet and onto the ground. Chel was smiling though, seeing as she expected Peyton to be offering her a hand up, probably gloating about winning in the cocky way that suns did. In fact, it would have made her happy to see that, since Chel knew after breakups of any shape, it always felt good to lord something over someone. If Peyton had the strength to gloat, it meant she was one step closer to recovery, whatever that looked like for her.
What she didn't expect was a strong, well aimed punch that made the world go dark. Had she miscalculated Peyton's character? Was she really so sneaky as to use a spar to get back at Jack? Winning was one thing, but there was something darker at play.
Not that Chel would ever know. It was dark, so dark and she heard his laugh in her ears, she heard the dripping disappointment and waited for the sky to shatter again.

Chel didn't even so much as twitch as she hit the ground, and Peyton was on her knees beside the fallen Sun before the dust had time to settle. "Chel?" A quick press of fingers to the side of her neck was enough to quell the sudden spurt of blind panic that had welled up, Chel's pulse was there, strong and still quick from the previous exertion. For just a moment she'd though the wards had failed. It wasn't the first time she'd managed to inflect some manner of injury despite them, not even the first time she'd knocked someone out, but it was the first time since her bond with Warrick had grown so close. < She's okay.> I could have rally hurt her.< You didn't. She'll be fine.> But I could have. She was still fairly distressed as she touched Chel's cheek, gave her a soft pat. "Chel? Wake up. It's time to get up now." No response. Peyton pulled a breath through clenched teeth and moved around the other Sun's head so she could get a good look at the side of her jaw, inspecting it for any damage. Thankfully there didn't appear to be anything there but a splash of red that would probably bruise, but nothing worst. "Come on Chel. Don't make me carry you to the infirmary." She had the strength, but damned it it wouldn't be awkward with Chel's height.

He wouldn't have given the glance a second thought. While they were dating, yes, and he did have some investment in Chel's well being, it didn't translate to caretaker no matter how many times it felt like it was. As a Sun, she was often out on the field anyway; he merely happened to be jogging around the same time, attempting to find his way back to a semblance of regularity even though his sleep cycles were beyond ********. It wasn't seeing her knocked out that gave him pause at all, but rather who her opponent was.
Jack veered off the path and slowed as he approached them. Several thoughts occurred to him in tandem: there were buffers in place, there was distress on Peyton's face, and he felt a prickle of irritation at the sight of her touching Chel. It reminded him a lot of how she had acted in the infirmary when he had been recovering from Caelius' bomb--superior, benevolent, and ******** uncalled for as this shouldn't have happened in the first place.
All before Peyton could even say a word.
"Move," he ordered her as he crouched by Chel's side and began to inspect her.

Peyton should have heard Jack coming, she was usually much more aware, but she damn near jumped out of her skin as he sank down beside her and ordered her to move. Close enough, in fact, that she had to scramble to the side just to keep from being knocked over by him. For just a moment she forgot that Jack and Chel were now dating. What this might look like to him, if all he'd caught was the very end of things, or even just Chel laying on the ground unconscious and Peyton hovering over her and trying not to panic. For that minute, all the Sun could could feel was relief, because Jack worked in the infirmary. He knew what he was doing, he was capable, and he was tall enough to carry the other girl easily if she needed any additional help. But she shouldn't. Hands on the ground between her feet, Peyton crouched beside them, watching as Jacks long hands as he went about checking vitals. "We were sparring, she said her shield was fine." Peyton didn't sound sure of herself. Runic shields weren't as good as weapon provided, she knew that, but she had trusted Chel's assurance that it was fine. "I didn't mean..." The words stuck in her throat, gaze flicking up to Jack's face. "I wasn't trying..." It was an accident. She fell back to sit on the grass and small hands came up, pushing hair from her face impatiently. This wasn't supposed to happen, not inside the wards. Was it?

She said her shield was fine. Peyton was lucky to have mentioned that comment because it was just like Chel to say that. He sighed shortly and gathered her into his arms. Nothing seemed broken, though Chel was likely to be bruised and migrained when she woke up. All signs pointed to a good natured spar turned into an accident, but Jack was Jack and Peyton was still a stupid b***h regardless. Albeit seeing her this apologetic was its own twisted reward. "Excuses," he said curtly, hoping it exacerbated her concerns. With Chel in his arms, Jack got to his feet. "All I hear are excuses for not being able to control yourself. You're ******** lucky there are wards."

Peyton was pushing up to her feet quickly as Jack pulled Chels up into a princess hold and lifted her. She was still focused on her fellow Sun, not really looking at Jack. Not until he started berating her, at least. The words stung, and of course there weren't anything she hadn't already been thinking, but hearing it from him, in that tone, was enough to harden worried features into something cold and defiant. A defiance she really didn't have any right to be feeling, right that moment. "Yes I am, but I also would have stopped before it got this far if I was facing someone other than you without the wards there for a safety." Her own voice had dipped into something cold, and pale eyes had narrowed up at him. She'd be damned if she was going to tell him she'd gotten carried away. That the lines between spar and fight had blurred. It was a mistake, and she would apologize to Chel for it later when the Sun woke up, but she didn't owe Jack an apology.

He laughed darkly. "That's bullshit and you know it. If you could control yourself, we never would have cultivated our deal in the first place." She was still this 2D creature to him, flat and unchanging and barely even human. He wouldn't ever shake off the thought that she would attack Chel just to needle at him, if not now than in the future. "How was the fight anyway?"

Her silence following his laughter was probably damning enough without her trying to defend herself again. Besides, it would have been a lie, and with Jack she didn't to stick to honesty. The follow up question caught her off guard, jerked her attention back up and around to him, and she folded her arms over her chest as she considered him with thoughtful suspicion. "Fine." If he was asking there was a reason behind. "Just a silly spar, it was fun, though it would have been better if She'd had her bow instead of those daggers." Of course fun didn't mean satisfying, and Jack knew that.

The look she wore made him hold back on the other questions. (Why were you sparring her when you knew she wouldn't hold up? Knocking her out on accident is fun now? What are you ******** looking at, Creedy?) Needling her would just make him suspect. < Honestly, dear one. We both know Chel enjoys sparring regardless of her current status. This was an accident. >
I prefer no ******** accidents. "Pretty sure Chel agrees," Jack replied. "As long as it's clear where the lines in our agreement are, then. I'll get to you soon enough if that's what you're hankering for so badly." That was apparently his version of goodbye, as he was turning to head to the infirmary after speaking.
