The golem was now in terrible disarray, though the defensive walls were actually standing against the shadowlings relatively well.

Chance reached out and patted Otto's shoulder consolingly.

"Don't worry," he said cheerfully. "After this we can go do something else to get your mind off of it so we don't have horrible princess Harrison golem nightmares."

"Nothing will bleach that golem from my head." Otto grumbled, wondering if he'd feel better by adding more scary scarecrows around Harrison; just to block him fro view. He left the safe point to go add bricks to the walls.

Coming back, he grimaced at Harrisson, reaching up to pull the veil over it's face.

"Don't worry, I'll find something much better to occupy your head with," Chance promised with a smile, heaping the next load of bricks around the golem. It made a pained face at him, letting out a warbling wail from beneath the veil.

Chance hastily slipped away, dragging Otto with him as the shadowlings began pouring in.

"Okay, that is horrifying, I'm never gonna look at Harrison the same way and I haven't even met the guy."

Otto looked at Chance curiously. "Better be pretty good to wipe this clean from my head." Harrison Hughes in a tattered princess dress whining and pouting would stain like wine on a white shirt. Unless Chance planned on making Otto down a shot of bleach, that one was staying a while.

He watched the aftermath with Chance from safety, and counted how many waves they had gone through on his hand. "Was that five?" He asked, uncertain. "I think five is the minimum.." He wondered if this would clear him to use more runic tech. He'd only ever gotten cleared to use the torch, which had come in handy all of once. However, that one time saved a lot of asses on the field. He'd thought himself fairly clever.

"Ohya. If you ever wanna get rid of famine bugs in a flash? Use a runic torch. Lights them ******** up good."

"It will be ******** awesome," said Chance grandly, and then a second later -

" - that is, when I figure out what exactly it'll be," he added, grinning at Otto. "But at the very least, it'll be something fun, though I'm not entirely certain what there is to do for fun around here. Maybe we can go and see the caves on the beach or explore somewhere. Or watch a movie."

Chance squinted at the remaining golem with a certain amount of suspicion.

"I think that was the last round," he said slowly, taking a cautious step out but remaining near to Otto in case something jumped out at them. "But thanks for the tip about the runic torches, definitely gotta remember that tip if I ever have to deal with those ******** class="quote">

"I ain't explored the caves here before." Otto murmured, but then seemed to blanche at the idea. Caves were dark, right? Pitch black, perhaps. He had his artifact though. With that, he'd see any danger before it came. Still... "Or um... just the beaches... They got stuff in the sand sometimes." Yeah, definitely better than caves. He felt himself tremble just thinking about it.

"You're welcome. They're nasty, and really dangerous." He spoke gravely, the scar covered by a tattoo on his neck suddenly itching and burning at the memory. That feeling never numbed or dulled. It followed him every time the memory surfaced. And that had only been one of the times he'd had close encounters with the bugs. He remembered the slow healing of his ankles after swarms of them ate away at his flesh when he'd tried to find an artifact to save Nevada.

Otto began to move with Chance, leaving the training centre; the wails of Princess Harrison long behind him.

"To think.. we only survive so long here cause of the weapon bond. Normal humans'd never handle one tenth of what we suffer."

He saw the hesitance in Otto's countenance, saw the small tremor that seemed to run through him, and it alarmed Chance, his brows rising in concern as he said quickly, "We don't have to do any of that stuff, really. I swear I wasn't going to try and kidnap you or anything."

It was said with a certain amount of gentle teasing, though he felt a strange sense of worry that he'd actually done something to make Otto uncomfortable. Chance took a few steps back to fall into step beside him, sliding his hands into the pockets of his jeans.

"We'll just take a walk on the beach," he said, keeping his tone light. "I haven't been a victim to the bugs yet myself, but I've heard many warnings about staying away from the Horsemen in general."

A pause, and then -

"Sorry if I said something...unpleasant," Chance added, a little hesitantly.

The joke fell on deaf ears, as Otto fell quiet about it. His mouth in a thin line, and his gaze keeping just ahead. He didn't make a sound again until Chance spoke last. He shook his head lightly, pulling his hood up once they got outside.

"Weren't you." He murmured honestly. "You didn't do nuthin'."

"I like the beach. That'll be fine."

He reached out a hand as they stepped outside, hesitated, and then gently touched the back of Otto's head for a brief moment, his other hand slipping into the pocket of his own jacket.

"Sorry," said Chance lightly, and squeezed Otto's shoulder reassuringly before his hand fell away entirely. "If it'll make you feel any better, after the beach, we can go and find something sweet to eat."

"Either or.." He murmured, more self conscience and embarrassed to be worried about the dark in a cave then anything. It was so childish. Yet any time he told himself he needed to be brave, and strong, and just go for it; he'd tremble. Back off. Walk away. Run. As always he'd run. But it was just so hard not to. Running away was what he did. He specialized in it for Christ's sake.

Otto breathed in, steeling his will.

"No. Let's go to the cave." He said with wavering bravery. He ran from everything because he never fought it. He went with it, and let himself be ashamed of it. He let it be.

"I'ma let you in on somethin' I prefer to keep to myself." He said as they got closer to the beach. "There's a fear I'm never able to get over, and that's one of the reasons I didn't wanna go to the cave."

He blinked in surprise, taken aback by the sudden change of Otto's mind.

"You sure?" Chance asked, as they drew nearer to the beach, the smell of the salt water and the sand reaching them. It was gently breezy, a wind tousling their hair. "I mean, I'm down with whatever you're comfortable with, you know that."

A fear I'm never able to get over. Chance gave a slow nod of understanding, as the pieces began to click into place. He felt strangely pleased with being told something so personal to Otto; like he was being trusted, and it was rather nice.

"Well, if you want to go, then," He gave another nod, this one more decisive, more encouraging. "I'll go with you, of course. The fear has to do with...the caves?"

Otto nodded.

"Caves are bad for two reasons. One of which is.. they're usually pitch dark." He stuffed a hand into his hunter's coat pocket and pulled out a pair of blue, glowing sunglasses. "I got an artifact that can give me night vision. But I still get frozen just thinkin' about goin' someplace I can't see."

As for the other reason..

"Dungeons and caves remind me of a few places were things went wrong. Remember I talked about Horsemen?" He murmured, shifting his shoulder in discomfort. "I got locked away in one of their dungeons for over a month, once."

Chance did not mind the darkness, but he understood the reasons why other people did. He gave the sunglasses a curious look, but didn't interrupt as Otto talked, letting him explain before he commented himself.

The sand squished beneath their feet as they crossed the beach. "What the ********," said Chance, startled by this new revelation as he turned to look at the other. "Holy s**t, man, that's..."

But he stopped what he was going to say, because chances were that Otto already knew how messed up it was; and although Chance had had his fair share of abuse growing up, he had not ever been held captive in the den of some crazed monster.

"I'm sorry," Chance settled for, simple and succinct. "Seriously. And I understand the cave thing, and the kidnapping joke." He winced at the memory. "Sorry again for that, I can see now that it was insensitive."

One of the caves was just up ahead, smaller in size than a few of the others, but still with an imposing darkness to the front of it. Chance slowed his steps a little.

"You sure you wanna go in?" he asked. "I mean, I'm behind you all the way."

Otto shook his head slowly. "It's okay. It's why I decided to tell you." Lest they run into more awkward moments like this. His steps slowed with Chance's, and then stopped entirely. He didn't want to go in there. Not at all.

"I don't wanna go in." He said honestly, his eyes wide. "But I run from everything."

This was dumb. I should run.

Run, run, just walk away.
