The smile sobered just a touch. "Well, the longer people are hear, they more they have to endure. A lot of us that have been here for a year or more usually have something that keeps us up at night." Some, admittedly, worst than others. Peyton always slept better when there was another body in her bed, particularly if that body happened to be her sister. The old familiarity kept the dreams away, more or less.

But now wasn't the time to worry over nightmares. Now was about brownies and good company!

"I never did get into facebook or anything before I got here, and even now that doesn't hold much appeal." Her shoulders came up in a shrug, and she chuckled as he dipped a finger in to steal a taste, eyes up to watch his expression. "Good?"

She couldn't help but nod, agreeing. "Cookie dough is amazing. Astrid makes a killer chocolate chip." It was the younger Creedy's favored method of cheering her sister up, and it usually worked.

"But yeah, I mean it's a stupid social media application, but occasionally it has it's uses. I mean, it's a public forum of sorts, everyone gets a voice. That's not always good, but it's not always bad, either. Could you hand me that?" She pointed at one of the pans, scrapping the edges of the bowl with the spoon.

His expression matched Peyton's in terms of becoming less playful and more serious, though Chance was still smiling. "I didn't mean to make light of it," he said gently. "My bad. There's s**t people have been through here that I haven't had to yet, so I can't honestly say that I know how to handle that sort of thing because I haven't been through it yet myself."

He let out a little hum, wondering what exactly Facebook was, but the question was discarded because the batter did taste very good.

"Excellent," said Chance grandly, grinning at Peyton. "I'm a big fan of sweets, even if I do like spicy better most of the time."

The name Astrid was familiar; it took Chance a minute to remember that Peyton had said on Twitter that she had a younger sister, and said sister had come to see Chance in the infirmary that one time, to hear the tale of the constellations.

"Chocolate chip dough is best left as dough instead of actual cookies," said Chance, scooping out another bit of batter and sucking on his finger, a contemplative expression on his face. He straightened and reached for the pan, passing it over to Peyton.

"I think for me it's more that I just don't prefer to get myself into unnecessary drama," he said. "That tends to be a hassle."

She glanced up at him, studying his expression for a long second, then offered a smile and a shake of her head. "No need. I didn't think you were, just offering an explanation of the odd hours kept by the folks here." He'd know, soon enough. Eventually everyone ran into something horrific enough to leave a lingering impression. She didn't begrudge those that had managed to avoid it, she envied them.

The compliments on the brownie batter seemed to perk the girl right up. She stood a little straighter, bouncing once on the balls of her feet, and a soft little pleased grin slid along her lips.

"I agree with you there. It's very seldom the dough actually get's baked. Usually we go at it with spoons, and before we know it, it's gone." No shame. Peyton grinned, chuckling under her breath. Her pinkie dipped into the batter again, and she sucked it clean before the pans slid her way and it was time to pour it all out.

There was enough to fill two pans, which would give them quite a few brownies to divvy up between them , though Pey was planning on giving most to Chance. This was for his promotion, after all, but Peyton couldn't bake without saving a little something for Astrid. It was a rule. Surely the taller Sun wouldn't mind.

Both we slipped into the oven, and she set a timer before turning to lean against the counter, arms folding as she looked up at him. "That's a pretty smart choice though. If I could avoid all the drama, I definitely would."

"I don't sleep just because I don't," said Chance mildly. There was really no explanation for his insomnia, or at least none that he'd managed to decipher so far. "It's just sort of been a thing ever since I got out to live on my own, I haven't yet managed to find a solution for it yet."

Other than the one time he'd curled himself close to someone else without the strings that came with anything further than just a simple desire for warmth. But that had been a special occassion, and he wasn't about to go pressing for more when the other party was clearly uncomfortable with too much physical contact.

"Dough is the best part of baking," said Chance grandly as Peyton began to pour the batter into the pans. He watched her curiously, waiting until it was in the oven to give her a little smile, lacing his fingers together.

"That sounds like you unfortunately get yourself into a lot of unintentional drama," he said, a little dryly.

"That sounds like a potentially annoying problem," she offered back mildly, and now that the brownies were baking there was nothing left to do but clean up. That was Peyton's least favorite part of cooking, but she turned, started to pick up, then paused as she grabbed the mixing bowl.

"Speaking of dough. Well, batter." Grinning, she slid a finger around inside, then licked it clean, smiling. The spoon, still caked with chocolate deliciousness, was offered up to the other Sun.

As for drama...delicate features pinched, and Pey helped herself to another finger full of batter before answering. "Unintentional is right." A soft snort. "There are too many big personalities here, so it's inevitable that folks will butt heads. My two closest friends happen to be the sort with big personalities, so..." She wouldn't change them though. She loved them just the way they were.

"I get some sleep," said Chance with a smile. "But usually only a few hours at a time, if that. Sometimes I go for a bit without sleeping, sometimes I manage to get time in the morning to doze, and sometimes things are just ******** up in general."

He was laughing a little, and reached out to accept the spoon.

"My thanks," he said with a little wink, licking the chocolate off and thinking that Otto would have appreciated the fact that he was eating brownie batter. "Who are you two closest friends, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Still sounds annoying," she mused, though her expression was thoughtful. If he'd been dealing with the insomnia since he was younger he was probably used to it by now. Maybe it just wasn't a big deal to him anymore, not like it was to her.

She was still looking thoughtful as he asked about her friends, and she blinked up at him before frowning and looking away, well aware that one of the two she meant was someone that had given Chance a hard time over twitter, and recently. It really would have been nice if the people she got along with could just all get along as well, but it never seemed to work out that way. One more reason she got to deal with more than most.

"America is my Moon partner and my best friend," she started, smiling warily. "And Taym has been my closest friend from almost the beginning." There was a slight note of apology in her tone--for the other man's bluntness, for how harsh he could come across as. Though Chance might not even know that Obadiah Thompson was Taym. "He's always had my back, hardest worker I've ever known."

There was a knowing smile on Chance's face as he rested his elbow on the table and leaned the side of his head against his hand.

"Ahhh, yes," he said, sounding somewhat amused. "The ones known as Deus' most vocal Twitter couple. Admittedly I've never met Taym in person, but I've heard about him. I've sparred against America, she's a feisty, fun redhead, I think she's got a lot of spunk."

He seemed entirely at ease discussing them, in spite of the inner eye rolling he had done earlier when it came to Taym and his self-righteous monologues. Chance's long fingers idly rubbed his temple, the black painted nails disappearing into his dark curls.

"I don't have a best friend, or many friends," said Chance, though he didn't sound bothered by this, merely contemplative. "But my Moon partner is Finn Connor."

Never mind that he was currently avoiding said Moon partner.

The lack of negative reaction to the names was a relief. Either Chance didn't hold a grudge, or Taym's brash behavior on twitter hadn't been enough to truly ruffle his feathers. Either way, it meant an awkward situation was avoided, and Peyton was grateful for that.

"She's got spunk for days," she agreed, smile returning in full. "And she's a great partner. Really capable and dependable." There was a certain obvious fondness in her tone when she talked about the redhead. Absently, small fingers came up to curl around the ring that hung from the chain around her neck, pink poking through the center.

The smile slipped at the mention of Chance not having any friends, and the smaller Sun looked up at him, head tilting gently to one side. She knew he was being honest, but there wasn't a hint of sadness to his voice. In a backward, ironic sort of way Peyton could relate to that. For years the tiny blonde had purposefully kept people at arms length, never getting close to anyone, because having to say goodbye was too hard. It was a choice, but it hadn't been an easy one, and it wasn't anything she'd be willing to do again.

"Don't you get lonely?" She asked it before she could stop herself, before the name drop had a chance to sink in. When it did, a perplexed, amused look crossed delicate features. "So he finally settled down as someone's partner? That's good to hear. He's a good Moon."

Truth be told, Taym's brash behavior had annoyed Chance; he was just very good at not showing it, minus the conversation that he'd had with both Claude and Maebe about him. He laughed a little, still rubbing at his temple in idle gestures.

"Spunk for days is a good quality," he said lightly. "She seemed very capable when I sparred her, very good at what she does. As for Finn, well...he's definitely capable as well," Chance added, with a laugh, a glint of amusement in his eyes. "He's very no-nonsense, doesn't take s**t, and that's probably why we work well together."

Or did work well together.

{ you will resolve your issues }

Thanks.

He saw the smile disappear from her face, but Chance's remained, easy and relaxed. "Depends on your definition of lonely, I suppose," he answered her casually. "I have people that I like, people I find interesting. I have several I see on a routine basis, and I know a lot of people, enough to make keep me occupied, I suppose. I'm endlessly curious, so I seek out a lot of people as well."

Since they weren't actively cooking anymore, and their presence beside the oven was not needed for the baking of the brownies within, Peyton pulled one of the tall stools away from the table and took a seat. "He's a pain in the a**, but I'd let him guard my back any day." It wasn't exactly trust, so much as a mutual understanding. The Sun still wasn't entirely sure what she thought of Fiinn, but he wasn't the enormous douche bag she had originally assumed him to be.

The frown lingered as he explained things further, though it was more puzzled than anything else now.

Elbow coming to rest on the table top, Pey dropped her chin into her upturned palm, looking up at him thoughtfully. "I suppose when you put it that way," she'd concede thoughtfully. There were people like that in her own life, but anyone she bothered to see routinely were people she considered her friends.

Humming lightly, she turned her attention to the oven for a handful of seconds, mulling it all over, before looking back up at him with a soft little smile blooming on her lips. "Well, maybe I'll get lucky and catch your interest too." A little mild honesty would be very welcome at this point in her life.

"Sounds about right for Finn," said Chance cheerfully, because even while he was attempting to distance himself from said partner, there was no denying that he had an affinity and a liking for Finn that was stronger than many of his other relationships, barring a select few.

Peyton was given a little smile, relaxed and amused all at once.

"You already have," said Chance mildly. "Otherwise I wouldn't be here in the first place."

There was a pause, and then,

"Well," he amended. "That's not entirely true, I'm not uncomfortable with people I'm disinterested in, they just simply don't interest me. But either way, the point is moot because you're rather nice to talk to, so I suppose the answer to your statement is that you don't need to get lucky."

Pey flashed him a pleased little grin, sitting up again and crossing one leg over the other, her foot bobbing idly. "Good to know. So my plan to buy my way into your good graces with baked goods worked." Mischief and humor made pale eyes even brighter.

A glance towards the timer on the oven showed they still had about ten minutes to wait for the brownies to finish, she Peyton turned, stretching a leg out beneath the table to nudge the stool across from her away from the table in an invitation. "Seems like you've been doing pretty good since our first encounter on the training field. I'm glad. Sometimes it's a really hard adjustment." It could have been personal experience, or it could have been something she'd seen time and again. Or both.

"Now that you're getting stronger, I want a rematch sometime." Especially if he had been training with Finn.

"Yes, that's exactly how it works," said Chance with a laugh. "The easiest way to a man's heart is through his stomach, after all. Though to be fair, I'm relatively easy to please when it comes to things; there are very few instances in which I don't find things at least somewhat interesting, in one way or another."

He slid a glance towards Peyton, a smile on his face as he came and sat across from her, relaxing down onto the stool. "Well, I haven't had much in terms of missions," he said thoughtfully. "But I suppose that'll happen in its own time, I somehow managed to make it to Intermediate without going on a major mission."

Chance tugged on one of his curls, running a hand through his hair, the little stars around his left eye briefly visible. "Of course, I'd be happy to spar with you again," he said lightly. "I'm always up for that sort of thing, especially since I can't really get complacent now, can I?"

"Oh, is that so? I'll have to keep that in mind." It was impossible to say whether she as commenting on winning her way into the hearts of mean with food, or Chance being easily pleased. It could have been both, and the smile still lingering on on her lips offered no hints in either direction.

When he sat across from her the smaller Sun leaned forward to rest her chin on her hand, elbow on the table. "Don't worry, this stretch of normalcy can't last. We'll be up to our eyeballs in horrifying and strange any day now, just you wait." While her tone made light of it, it wasn't actually a joke. The peace--if they could even call it that--wouldn't last. Something would happen, it always did. It was just a matter of time.

She blinked as she noticed the stars over his brow. They blended so well with his hair, she'd missed them up to this point. "No, complacency in Suns is a sin," she chuckled, though she sounded just a touch distracted, and after a moment she'd slid to the edge of her chair, closer to the table. "Are those stars?" Her head lifted, and she pointed in the direction of his forehead where dark curls hid the dainty marks.
