Their swords met with a clash of sparks and Vyrtem pushed against the ataru fighter as the spry little fairy jumped and rolled over Vyrtem's shoulder. Without missing a beat, Vyrtem flailed in a large circle to strike behind him. He wasn't even looking where he was swinging. He didn't have time to think. He barely had time to act. It was starting to get to him that he had an audience. He was getting nervous. What if they laughed at him? He was inexperienced. Clumsy. He was losing. Why wouldn't they laugh at him? He couldn't take it. He just let the rage wash over him and blind him to everything. And in turn, he became even clumsier.

The crowd was growing. Everyone was pointing and giggling as the two stumbled their way through combat. No one was making contact with anything but metal. It was embarrassing. Vyrtem struggled to ignore the pain in his face, but managed to funnel that pain into anger, using that anger to make himself strong. Or so he thought. Wasn't that the way of the Sith? To use your hate. To use your inner darkness to make your deepest desires reality? Well, right now, he was enraged, and his deepest desire was to murder this ******** whelp in front of him. If he could ever catch the little b*****d.

Vyrtem's arm was fully extended, and the initiate punished his mistake. A crisp smack struck his wrist and Vyrtem roared as his sword fell from his hand. The initiate held his sword to Vyrtem's throat as the young Sith nursed his wounded hand, seething. Vyrtem shook with barely contained anger and stared at his opponent's eyes. The boy was a few years younger than Vyrtem, and about a hundred pounds lighter. How could such a pathetic whelpling defeat Vyrtem? How could he have lost? How. How? HOW!? Vyrtem clenched his fists. He suddenly leaped forward, lashing out with his fist to strike at the boy's face.

The boy slammed the hilt of his sword forward, catching Vyrtem on his already bruised jaw, sending Vyrtem to his knees. That blade slid easily back to Vyrtem's throat. Vyrtem's eyes stung with tears and he blinked hard to try and clear his vision. His breath was hard fought, and he stared at the ground. How could he have lost? Had he lost? His eyes drifted upward to the boy's eyes. Vyrtem was confused. Wasn't he supposed to be there? Standing above the fallen enemy? But he wasn't. He was on the ground. Vanquished. The others had already started clapping quietly to celebrate the boy's accomplishment.

"Good job, Temyr. I knew you had him."

Temyr. His better. The one who had calmly struck him down.

"Yield."

What was that word? It wasn't in Vyrtem's vocabulary. He didn't know how. His heart began to race. He was sweating. He could hear blood rushing in his ears. "I'LL KILL YOU!" He leaped at the boy like a rabid animal, seeking to punch, to tear, to claw. To rend this whelp into nothingness. And he would.

Temyr had time to roll his eyes as Vyrtem tried to jump at him. He didn't even bother with his sword. The boy raised his fist and slammed it directly into Vyrtem's jaw. Vyrtem's whole world exploded into a shower of stars. His body went limp and he hit the ground, unconscious. He didn't have time to think about what he could have done better. He didn't have time to think about anything. He was just out.

"Idiot." Temyr turned away from the body and shook his head. The dark-skinned zabrak walked to his fallen comrade. "Are you alright, Lemu?"

The blue-skinned twi'lek rolled his jaw experimentally and blinked the stars out of his eyes. "Y-yeah... He just caught me by surprise."

"You mean you got clumsy." Temyr did not offer Lemu a hand up.

"Y-... Yes." Lemu climbed off of the floor, shaking his head. "At least you seemed to handle him."

Temyr shook his head and rolled his eyes. "He was predictable. And stupid."

"Good job, Temyr. You looked fantastic." The young human female stepped forward, her blonde curls bouncing as she bit her lip lightly. "He never stood a chance."

"It doesn't matter how you look, Mina, so long as you win. Maybe he'll learn that lesson." He played it cool, but he loved the attention as the crowd acknowledged how great he was. This was exactly how he wanted them to know him. As a glorious victor. A god.

Vyrtem raised his heavy head just in time to watch Temyr walk away with his adoring entourage. His rage boiled within him, but it was an impotent anger. He couldn't do anything about it... He stood and bent down to collect his sword, wishing that he could disappear. They were all looking at him. Please just let them go away...

"You really aren't very bright, are you?"

Oh Hell no.

They all turned around to take one last look at Vyrtem while Temyr said something clever when they saw him struggling to his feet. And then one of the people in the crowd called him an idiot. They all laughed and figured that was the end of it. Until Vyrtem raised his blade and leveled it at the figure. "What did you just say to me?"

Temyr's mouth dropped open, and the others all stopped mid-sentence. Temyr whispered. "Oh s**t."

He laughed. "You... You can't be serious."

"DO I LOOK LIKE I'M JOKING!?"

The smile faded from his face. "I grow tired of this game. Get your sword out of my face."

Vyrtem stood strong.

"Very well then." The figure flicked his shoulders and dropped his cloak, rolling his neck as he reached to his belt. A mechanical hum filled the air as he held a crimson-bladed lightsaber in the makashi salute, flicking the blade downward, the pureblood Sith's face relaxed in a regal sort of boredom.

Vyrtem charged forward, swinging his blade in a wide arc toward the Sith, attempting to cleave him in twain at the stomach. The crowd immediately began to gather again, thicker this time as this boy had clearly had something knocked loose in his last fight. There was no way a fresh initiate was challenging an Apprentice to combat. No way. With a real lightsaber. He was... He was crazy. Temyr had knocked something in his head and broken it because nobody was this absolutely insane. Nobody But here Vyrtem was, doing exactly that. And he was going to die. And they were going to watch. It was a flawless and effortless parry on the part of the Sith, who raised his saber almost casually to block Vyrtem's strike.

Vyrtem was done. With an easy flick of his wrist, the Sith slashed a line through Vyrtem's hilt. Not content knowing that the boy was without a weapon, the Apprentice decided to punish him. But not too severely. With another flick of his wrist, too lightning-fast to detect, he cut a circle in the air. Mou Kei. A flawless demonstration of his skill with the lightsaber, and of his generosity, the Sith touched his lightsaber tip to each of Vyrtem's limbs. Once at his left bicep, then his left thigh. His right thigh, and then his right bicep. The blade came to rest an inch in front of Vyrtem's face. The boy could feel the heat of the blade as it hummed a hand's-breadth away from his flesh.

"You have much to learn, child. Not everything can be solved with blind rage." He'd never lost his temper. Never even gotten flustered. His face remained neutral and his eyes locked on Vyrtem's as he coolly extinguished and replaced his lightsaber on his belt, waving a hand over his cloak as it leapt back onto his shoulders.

Vyrtem's body was on fire as he sat on his knees, his mind numb... How... How had his anger failed him? How had his rage not been sufficient? His whole world made no sense anymore. He'd spent years studying theory, and everything he'd been told was a lie. He wanted victory. He needed it. And here he was, humiliated.

No.

"You fool!"

Vyrtem summoned up all of his demons and let them fly with a powerful force push. An utterly mighty attack from one so raw. It didn't so much as ruffle the SIth's cloak. He turned and held up his palm, pushing just as hard back at Vyrtem, completely cancelling out his attack. Vyrtem was crushed. That was... That was everything he had. That was it. The extent of his power. The crowd sat in silence. No one had the nerve to speak... Vyrtem had just... Attacked a Sith's back... After he had just been spared. What was going to happen?

"I can see that you are not understanding the lesson I am trying to teach you. Perhaps this will help." The Sith raised his hand and the air was filled with the crackling of electricity as lightning erupted from his fingers, penetrating and ravaging Vyrtem's body as the Initiate screamed in agony, his clothes charring as his skin burned.

Vyrtem clawed at the earth as his body was wracked with pain and his world disappeared into a blinding white light. He lost consciousness and lay there on the ground, by all appearances a smoldering corpse.

"Insolent child." The Sith inspected his fingernails and turned away from the remains of the brat. "Anger is nothing if you don't know how to use it. And you are a fool. Just quit while you can before someone else kills you. You're not worth the Sith's time. He calmly paced away, going about his business as if nothing had happened.

Vyrtem slowly awoke as the laughing crowd dispersed. What a fool. He was a laughingstock. The young man --boy, really, as childish as he was acting-- gradually and painfully rose to his hands and knees, his entire world spinning.

Vyrtem had been embarrassed. Shamed. Publicly. He had no one to be offended for him, and besides, he did not want someone else to handle his problem. He would deal with this. He just... He needed time. Time and power. He sulked away, nursing his wounded pride and his charred flesh. To be honest, the physical wounds were not so bad, though his muscles did ache, and his skin was sore.

The young man did his best not to limp until he was out of sight, and only then allowed his temper to flare. His glove covered fist pounded into the wall and he clenched his jaw in a silent scream, adrenaline taking over and silencing the pain. Vyrtem regained something resembling composure then and proceeded immediately home, where he bandaged his wounds and dressed the bruises on his body with medication, so they'd go down sooner. He spent his time in his room wondering how in the galaxy he had lost so horribly, and what he could do to fix it. He was lost. Confused. He couldn't understand how his rage had made him weaker. His old teachers could transform their anger into a force that was undeniable and unmatchable. And he was simply made into an impotent bundle of nerves.

Vyrtem decided that he was clearly not meant to be a berserker. He was just not cut out for it... So what did that leave? He thought back over the battle. The only real time he'd been doing well was in the beginning, and he was able to channel that momentum into defeating one of his opponents, at the cost of a pretty hard hit, but still. He felt all of his wounds and was amazed that he could still move... Wait. He remembered his history, now. Thinking back over the great Sith Lords of old. Malgus, Syon, Malak... All of them had suffered grievous wounds and come back from it. HIstory was rife with Sith who had managed to continue on despite their wounds. Maybe... Maybe he could learn to do that.

He pondered the subject for some time. Many Sith walked the path of the Marauder, using their anger and power to channel into incredible offense.. Some walked the path of the Inquisitor, utilizing the Force to perform great feats of accomplishment and pursuing the secrets of the Dark Side... But.. What if he wasn't meant for that? He looked down at his bracer, and the scratches on it from combats in the past. His father's armor had protected him before. Why not wear armor? Why not learn to channel his rage into life and power to make himself unkillable? So that he could never suffer another defeat so embarrassing as the one he'd suffered today. To become invulnerable to damage... The forgotten and often ignored path of the Juggernaut. An unkillable machine of war, coming back from even mortal wounds and fighting without end.
PostPosted: Fri Mar 06, 2015 6:54 pm

One thing was sure, though. He couldn't face his classmates today. Or tomorrow... And his instructor was sure to have stern words for him, too... He decided that he should probably avoid everyone until this died down... He proceeded immediately to the library --his only real choice that remained-- where the Sith kept their 'public' secrets, --or, at least, the holocrons and books that Initiates could study-- and set about combing tirelessly through the tomes. He did not expect a holocron to help him, and besides that, he wanted the privacy that only a book could bring. Secrecy. Darkness.

It took him some time. He finally had to ask for help in the end. Luckily his temper had subsided, and was left with only determination.

"Excuse me.. I'm curious about the great Juggernauts of legend. Malgus and his like. Are there any books I can find regarding those topics? In particular, I'm looking for theory rather than history."

"Ah yes. In the pursuit of immortality, or just passing curiousity? No matter, I have just the thing. Now, you can't check it out, but you're not likely to have to share it with anyone. Come with me."
