Jake couldn't help but laugh as well, raising his arm to counter. "You as well, though it's still too early to say who's got the upper hand."
Spar or not, he apparently didn't intend on holding back as he brutally smashed into Ever's shield. He HAD given him the opportunity to hold back, but... he supposed it wouldn't benefit either of them to be fighting half-heartedly. So he took it seriously.

"Jesus Christ," and at least Ever was laughing as he staggered under the sharp blow: a hammering against his chest that knocked the breath out of him. It meant that, instead of returning the blow, he staggered and struggled to recover, sucking in great gulps of air.
He hadn't really meant to hit that hard, and was thankful they both had fear shields. Then again, he supposed any kind of weapon fighting without some sort of protection was just asking for trouble. Still, he was glad to see Ever was taking it with stride, and appreciated the lightheartedness of the spar, unable to help letting out a chuckle himself. "You ok?"

"You hit like a sledgehammer." But Ever laughed as he said it, straightening to bop Jake -- very, very lightly -- with the sheath of his weapon as the other man got within range. It seemed to do nothing, no sap on his shields, no damage. Maybe Ever hadn't done anything.
He shifted back into a more defensive position, though, drawing in a breath, and gestured for Jake to come at him again. Maybe there was a glimmer in his eyes.

"U-um, thanks?" The bop caught him off guard, and Jake blinked. Was he teasing him or complimenting him? True... he supposed it wasn't over until both parties desummoned their weapons, and considering Ever was taking a defensive stance, he was probably expecting an attack. And so an attack he got.

He still hadn't fully recovered, it seemed: he swung loosely as Jake stepped in, but neither managed to drive off the attack nor land his own blow. Maybe because he was still sucking in deep breaths, his chest a dull ache. But Ever looked amused, at least, to a certain degree. Not angry. A bit befuddled.

Jake gave Ever an odd look before striking again, wondering if he was still teasing him. Or... perhaps he really was injured? Come to think of it, he hadn't really... answered his question before. Could he be the type to shrug off an actual injury?

There might be an actual bruise, but no: not actually injured. Ever stepped in and, this time, his blade swung up along Jake's shield, cutting deep. As it did, he finally drew in a full breath, air filling his lungs and a spark in his expression. Fear flowed into his own shield, and a wash of relief went over his face.
Optional, but this hit can actually feel really good, if you want it to! Pleasant, instead of hurting.

Ever's strike helped alleviate Jake's fear of having accidentally hurt him, and odd as it was, the attack almost felt... pleasant. Was he that relieved? At the comment though, Jake couldn't help but laugh, striking back.
"Is that so?" Considering he didn't have a dog and wasn't much of an animal lover, he had... no idea how to interpret that comment. Had he looked sad?

"We're on the field. Here, at least, I'll survive." Even if it hurt a bit. He shook his head, helplessly amused -- because Jake had a way about him that was so earnestly concerned, all the time. Again he swept a blow at Jake, but this time he fell short.
"Well, if you say so..." If there was anything Jake had learned about people, it was that they were hard to read. Was Ever still teasing him, or was he actually tired? He had been missing quite a bit, but...
I-I, I'm not! I'm just... genuinely concerned.
Jake flustered, and swung his weapons, lashing out a little harder than he thought. SHUT UP CHESTER.

Jake hit Ever in the chest and, this time, there was no joking reply, or teasing compliment. Instead, it bowled him over completely: he hit the ground hard, flat on his back, the breath knocked out of him and a bruise across his chest.
It had been a while, he thought, since his shield had broken, and now his eyes went fuzzy. It had been much worse, last time his shield had broken. At least the training field drove off the most of it.
He finally drew in a breath, still sprawled in the dirt.
Oh s**t. oh s**t.. Crap crap crap crap- CHESTER! OH MY GOD.
Jake desummoned his weapons and rushed over to Ever, dropping to his knees as he looked over the white-haired hunter "s**t, I'm so sorry. Are you ok?"

"I'll live." It was a wheeze, and Ever wanted to put a laugh into it, or some kind of joke, but instead it just came out fragile and tight: his chest too sore to manage much better, right now. After a moment, he shook his head and struggled up onto one elbow, flinching as he did. He thought, maybe, the cigarette case shape Amory took when desummoned was settled at the small of his back, but he wasn't quite sure.
He'd have matching bruises on both sides.
"You hit hard. Should have taken some kind of handicap, I guess."
Jake gave him a hesitant smile and stood up, offering a hand to Ever. "Sorry 'bout that. I'm usually the one getting my butt handed to me." Though Ever said he was fine, Jake couldn't help but worry. "Um, do you want me to take you to the infirmary, just to be on the same side?"
