For just a beat, he was quiet -- his pace lagging just a bit more while he decided how to answer it. And when finally he spoke, it came with a bright flash of a smile to cover up any potential awkwardness, to smooth over any evasiveness -- "Here, now, right? We can't go back and visit, exactly, which is fine." He waved one hand, a flutter, to send some thought or concern up into the ether. Her question, maybe. "I was from the east coast, though, before the Big Move..."

If Abbi notices his pause (of which she does), she says nothing and continues to look placidly at everything but the man until he speaks. She's happy to play along with his avoiding the question and folds her hands at the small of her back. For a moment her smile turns wry at the smart comment, but it smoothes out quickly. "No, we can't. Dunno about you, but I wouldn't want to. Not one bit." Her nose wrinkles but she gives him one quick look to see how he'll react. "North or South?"Quick to move along, and hopefully to a safer subject, the teen slowed her pace just the tiniest bit so she was once again walking next to Lukas as opposed to the few feet she had gained on him. "You adjusting ok to your weapon so far?" One finger taps against her own head, a silent mention that hearing a new voice in one's head was totally weird, but that he wasn't the only one it happened to.

Lukas made a dismissive little sound, rolling his shoulders -- his head cocked to the side while he considered the adjustment to his weapon. For him, it hadn't really been much, he didn't think. Maybe, for those who engaged in soul-searching conversations with their new partners, it was a different story. "He mostly just sits and watches. I can tell he's watching, but he doesn't interfere much." He raised both eyebrows at her. "Is that normal?"

Since he glosses over her further probing, Abbi carefully notes this in his mental file she is compiling and considers what she's gathered. He's not nearly as chatty as she prefers, but she can't really hold that against him when she's the one asking all the questions. Most people are more than happy to talk about themselves, so finding someone a bit more reserved in their replies is certainly interesting and the girl wonders what she can gather from someone so guarded. A little hum of interest is her reply when he mentions his headmate just watching, and for a moment she considers his answer before she realizes he's looking at her. The teen blinks up a small smile at him and shrugs, quick to move her gaze away. "I'm not really sure what's considered normal." Which is a truth even her ghost agrees with. "You're new, so I'm sure you two will become closer and find your own ways to communicate, even silently. You might want to try talking to him... It'll help you become stronger." Abbi removes a hand from behind her back to make a slashing movement through the air, an indication that she's talking about his weapon in a physical manner. "You'll wanna be close to him to help you heal faster too. I so would hate to see you in the Infirmary." For a moment she gives him a teasing grin before she peers off to one side to the ocean they walk beside.

"I imagine I'll end up there eventually." At least he could tease back a bit, loosely, eyes following hers to the ocean below -- and Lukas tipped his head, considering the view. All things considered, it wasn't a bad place to be, aside from the battles, and the bodies, and the monsters, and the warp of all things normal. The weather was nice, at least, and the ocean beyond was a brilliant blue it was hard not to enjoy. "Is it safe to swim?" This came out slow and curious, eyebrows raised.

Well, he's not wrong. "Unfortunately. But if you ask real nice, I'll make sure they get you a good bed. Maybe even an extra pudding cup if you bat your eyes and stuff."
Distracted by his question, Abbi stopped walking and stood staring at the ocean for a moment, mouth pursed as thought the question over. "Not always." For a second or two she thinks some more before she turns to Lukas to explain herself better, hands working through the air as she talks. "I guess its kinda like... Like you know how there are safety levels at normal beaches? This is like that, only instead of rip tides being dangerous its like... Mermaids and sea monsters, that kinda stuff."
Suddenly she laughs and launches into something else. "When I first got to Deus, there was this big beach party that got crashed by these weird sea monster, giant things. They were crazy big and the beach was kinda... Closed off for a while. But sometimes you can find a safe place to take a little swim, but I wouldn't recommend it." He'd gotten a longer explanation than he'd probably been interested in, but that just was Abbi's way of things.

"So it's not safe, but we're allowed, at our own risk?" This was a different kind of question entirely, something almost cagey about it; Lukas's calm melting away to something considering, instead. Some thought had invaded and he wasn't exactly thrilled with it, but chewed on it all the same. He didn't wait for her answer but, instead, left the battered running path to head for the water, instead. She could follow if she wanted, or not, but apparently Lukas had seen some part of that as a challenge. Or maybe he was just testing boundaries. Just a few paces away he half-turned to look back at her. It'd be a trek to the beach, but he was prepared, eyes sharp. "No one will stop me?"

A shrug and noncommittal head tilt is Abbi's response. There was something weird about his question, not the question itself but the way he asked it. At least Abbi wasn't left in suspense. She stood on the path for a bit longer to watch him go, confused by his actions, and when she realized he wasn't stopping, she skittered after him.
When he looked at her she stopped, rising on her toes to try and see better, though she wasn't sure what it was she was looking for. "Uh I mean, like, I might try to stop you... Maybe? You seem... Pretty committed and I don't think there's anything in the water but like..." What was going on, she was so confused? Why would he want to test it? And she didn't really want to stop him, he was a grown man, he could make his own decisions... But also there were scary things in the water sometimes!! "Like the higher ups won't stop you, no." She clarified that, at least.

"I assume swimming too far from land, though, is not only dangerous but also forbidden." He asked it casually, with a little shake of his heads. It was a trek down to the beach, but he was taking it at a decent clip, now -- not that Abbi would have much trouble catching up, considering her overflowing well of energy. "Something that stops people after not too long, one way or another?"

Overflowing energy or not, Abbi still found herself breaking into a run after the man, wondering not for the first time today why she'd bothered talking to him. "Super duper dangerous--" She shouted at him, sliding on the sand and chirping in distress. Was this guy serious about testing the waters? Did Deus really attract the crazies?
In her worry Abbi began to flail a little, nothing too excessive, but she did look a little silly. "I don't really know but I mean, c'mon dude, you don't wanna test it!" Her meddlesome nature wouldn't let her just leave and so the teen dutifully followed. "We're not allowed to defect... This isn't the army, we don't get thrown in jail if we try to run away..." Not wholly sure of what would happen, Abbi knew that at the least they were podded. Given what she'd seen of Deus's leader, she highly doubted that was the only possibility for trying to leave the organization.

"Cut the histrionics, I'm not going to try to swim across the ocean." he shot a look back to her, his head cocked to one side, and his expression finished the thought: not right now he wasn't. Maybe he'd try it later. "I know exactly what kind of prison we're on. I'm hardly daft. I just want to go for a swim." Test the waters, and maybe come back later. "You don't have to follow."

"Ok, like nice use of vocabulary, but I'm just saying--" Abbi gave him a sour lemon face back and fluffed up when she saw the teasing sort of look he gave her. This was not at all the sort of thing a newbie should be spouting on about! He could get into trouble! And what if he did, then Abbi would probably have to report on some stupid council hearing, and the council never listened and--
"Oh yeah, of course I don't have to follow. But I'm not gonna let you just get gobbled up! I'm a Moon, I have to protect people." Was he really going to try to go swimming? He probably hadn't even brought a bathing suit and... And... Abbi slowed her walk, thinking it over. Most guys went shirtless when they swam... Maybe she could get a free show out of it... Not that she cared, of course. She would just stick around and make sure no mermaids got him. That was definitely all she would do!

"Are you saying the current threat level is at amber, honey?" He looked back at her, brief, amused -- and, yes, Abbi was right, Lukas was already working to roll the shirt up over his stomach and over his head, to add it to the coat already draped over one arm. It wasn't a bad view: a lean kind of muscular, not big but capable. Lukas scraped at his hair. "I don't know how much anyone tells us is bullshit, and how much is true. Let's find out. Want to join me?" Sand beneath their feet, now. He was moving at a good clip.

The current level was... Anywhere from amber to the blackest pit of darkness that indicated just how screwed they all were, but Abbi wasn't going to say anything about that. Half because pretty man stripping, but also because she knew arguing semantics wasn't really going to get her anywhere. So instead the teen discreetly stared.
"I mean, I've seen the giant monsters in the water so, that's def real--" Her feet touched the sand and she slipped a little, flailing around as she tried to get her footing and eventually just stopped to take off her sneakers. It would help keep the sand out, and make walking a tad easier. "Well... Since you asked." Abbi laughs as she hurries after him, rolling her eyes because he had seemed intent on getting rid of her until now. Or maybe he would use her as bait for the monsters... Huh... "I'm guessing you're a fan of beaches, then?"

"I haven't been to a beach in several years, so I'm not sure." The water was still a bit off -- oddly foreboding. The beaches of Deus might still have been the caribbean, but with the debris along the shore, the bare rocks, the uncleaned sands, they definitely took on a very different atmosphere. Not that it slowed Lukas down. He carefully set his clothing on a stone, shooting her a look as both hands went to his belt. "I've been in a pool since then, though."
