The two fowls out of the way, Evan and company continued onward to the mountain. Along the way, Evan figured a bit of training wouldn't hurt any, and as he thought this, a Slugma emerged from the treeline. Sending forward Undine do deal with the potential threat, Undine unleashed a Mud Shot before it could even muster it's own attack. The Slugma didn't take kindly to this, and retaliated with a Rock Throw. The rock collided with Undine's hard shell, but rebounded off it with barely even a scratch to it. The Kabuto then quickly ended the battle with one more Mud Shot. Collecting Undine, Evan quickly healed her up with a few potions, anticipating the next battle as they grew closer to the mountain.

Marx curiously tried to sneak a peak at his competitors performance, smiling a bit as he watched the pokemon -- he didn't recognize it -- shake the stage with its entrance. Cool! Marx waited as the judges swiftly tallied things up, and when it came that they were tied, a coin flip resulted in him going first. He was... surprised, and a little uncertain, but, giving a lopsided grin, he eventually headed out, figuring he might as well wing it. It wasn't like they'd practiced... at all. A smart individual might have watched a contest to actually get an idea of what to expect, but, well... this was Marx. Even while different, impatient and impulsive he still seemed to be.
"Alright, Chansey, let's get things started with a Work Up!" he decided, releasing his pokemon. The choice was intelligent by absolute choice-- he didn't know it's effect, but it made some sort of sense to start by working up. Chansey was released, hopping back and forth on her feet, little hands balled up into fists as she got herself Worked Up for the competition, finishing with a jab before flipping back to her trainer, looking quite confident and proud of herself. Marx grinned in both amusement and surprise before returning her and snatching the ball up, moving out of the way to let his opponent go next.

Once both contestants finished, Todd found himself pleasantly surprised at the first round's results: they'd both tied! Which left determining who went first the next round up to a coin toss, and although Marx and his Chansey ended up going first Todd didn't feel upset in the slightest, after all this by pure luck. Settling himself back behind the curtains the young boy watched curiously as Marx stepped forward again, but it was right before he sent out his pokemon that he realized he'd need help with one of his moves and quickly slipped away to request the help of one of the assistances. By the time Todd found his way back to his original spot Chansey had just finished up, and he joined in politely on the smattering applause of the audience. The sound of something being wheeled in caused him to look behind him and the young boy smiled, just in time! They were up next!
Taking the handle of the wagon Todd strode back out onto the stage, and with his free hand he groped for Axew's pokeball. "Alright Ax, let's show 'em your Rock Throw!" he shouted before releasing the small dragon once more on top of the small pile of rocks he'd requested earlier. Axew puffed out his chest atop his rocky throne before he grabbed a large rock directly underfoot and hopped down to the ground below. Grappling for a good hold Axew dug his claws into the rock before he hurled it into the air, throwing it at an arch so that it would travel further. From there the dragon picked up his feet, running as fast as he could so that he meet the rock at its landing point. With a few calculations he slid to a stop, and raised both arms straight up. There was a hiss and a bit of a grunt as the rock landed heavily in his arms and he buckled underneath its weight, but Axew persevered, sucked in a breath, and straightened his body out to proudly hold the rock above his head. With his form steady, Axew allowed a few moments to pass before he jogged back over to Todd and the wagon, tossing the rock back into the latter before he was returned and Todd, and the wagon, left the stage.

Basil settled in the audience, watching the performances of both his nimrod trainer, and his opponent, still aptly disguised as a human -- not that he was really keeping that in mind. He watched with narrowed eyes and a disapproving frown, studying both contestants, and their pokemon. Contests weren't really his thing, but he had a sneaking suspicion Marx might drag him into it all the same. If that were to happen-- he wanted to make sure he didn't end up making himself look like an idiot.
Surprisingly, Chansey was doing a pretty good job of that, at the moment. Marx... didn't really seem to be doing much on his own, but, well... he seemed to have fluked into a good move, and a pokemon that could perform on the draw. Lucky him.
Speaking of, Chansey had apparently decided to use Double Edge as her next move, a bit miffed by her opponents well-done performance. She darted out, turned, then raced across the stage, leaping up and crashing through the air. Since there was no opponent, she didn't hit-- she spun as she flew through the air, then landed, in a perhaps overly dramatic pose, one little hand raised up, her head bowed a bit, and the other hand down to form a perfect line across her bowing body. Marx blinked a few times, standing dumbly at the other end, clearly a little surprised at his own pokemon. He was certainly missing the 'work together' component of contests, but.... lucky for him, it was Beginner level. Still, Chansey seemed a little.... high strung from the heavy move, and the stress of the competition, and walked stiffly back to her trainer to watch their opponent go next.

After some thought Todd decided to keep the wagon of rocks on hand, after all half of Axew's move set did require the props, and with that settled he watched with some amusement as Chansey spun through the air, appearing to almost beat up the air as she flew, she certainly knew how to give a performance. Though as the nurse's assistant landed to the ground he was given an idea, and the boy looked towards Axew with a knowing look in his eye.
Upon their return to the stage Todd, seemingly alone, started out immediately by snapping his left hand out, pointing his finger out to the audience. "Body Slam!" From behind him Axew came hurtling out onto the stage, leaping just a few feet into the air before he tumbled back down. He leaned into his descent, and then jutted his elbow out, sending forth a shockwave around him when he landed. Axew waited a moment, gathered himself together, then waddled back over to Todd.

Chansey stood proudly at her post on the other side of the stage, still a bit winded from the move, but clearly puffed up with confidence. Perhaps a bit too much. She clearly wasn't expecting the shock wave the impressive body slam move sent out, and cried out, startled, flailing her little hands as she promptly tumbled over. Round as she was, she didn't just roll back-- she rolled around. Eventually she was able to shove herself up, a surprised, startled Marx not even recovering to help her before she huffed and stood. Red in the face (or, really, a darker purple than she was), she brushed herself off, flustered and angry. Marx still seemed seemed a little... well, startled himself, but shook his head. Before he could give an instruction, however, Chansey charged forward, springing up, and then Pounding a fist into the stage in another dramatic stance.

Then came the return of another fowl. A Swellow whom had perched itself up in a nearby tree swooped down, taunting Undine with it's claws. Evan took a step back in surprise, quickly recovering with a forward swing of his hand and an order. "Get it with Knock Off!" Undine managed to upturn her shell as the bird swooped in once more, and with a push of her tiny legs she managed to launch herself just high enough to ram right into the bird. They were finally at the mountain's entrance. Evan wasn't willing to take any more chances, so with a quick lean forward to scoop up Undine ,the male practically skipped his way into the mountain. Though this wasn't to say he didn't just make matters worse, being loud and obstructive to the Pokemon that made the mountain their home. As long as he didn't have to deal with anymore Swellow for awhile he was content.

Despite Chansey's rather embarrassing tumble--technically roll-- she still managed to deliver an alluring attack, which even Todd found impressive. That being said he did feel a bit bad, he couldn't have known the shockwave Axew had created earlier would've startled her so much... The young coordinator didn't allow that to faze him though, and once the stage had been cleared Todd gave the signal for Axew to go out-- though not before providing him with another prop. With rock in hand the dragon took the stage before hurling his rock into the air, jumping up after it to punch, and smash, it to bits. Rubble fell to the ground in small showers, the dragon landing back onto the ground immediately after its end.

This was the very last round. Waiting for Chansey to finish up Todd took one last breath, directing Axew to do the same, before he ushered his partner out. "Let's finish this up with Wide Guard!" Unlike the turns before Axew stepped quietly onto the stage before taking on a relaxed pose. He inhaled deeply before he began to move, quickly. With precise and timed stepped he moved across the stage, re-enacting a battle with an invisible opponent. Sliding his foot back he managed a sharp turn, pulling his body in and sideways, before launching an attack of his own, a sharp jab directly in front of him.
Axew collected himself relatively quickly and scuttled back over to Todd. With pokemon finished it took just a few minutes for the judges to tally up the last few remaining points, and once done both contestants were called back onto the stage. Axew was announced the winner and with a little puff of the chest, the dragon proudly accepted his beginner contest. A moment later, however, and he was trying to nibble on it. With a strained smile Todd gently pulled the ribbon away, shaking his head in mild amusement, before he turned to Marx with an outstretched hand. "You and your Chansey were really great out there!" he gushed, grinning widely. "I bet you two will win the next contest you enter."

Marx deflated a little when he lost, but, given the look on Chansey's face, her reaction was a lot worse. She was turning.... well even more purple than she already was. Perhaps it would be better to recall her. Getting so far ahead, and then dropping so far behind, must have been what was really setting her off, he figured, as he recalled her and tucked the pokeball away. He blinked when his opponent came over to shake hands, and beamed back at him, returning the gesture. "Thanks! I sure hope so. She seems to really dislike losing..." he remarked, looking uncertainly at the pokeball. He smiled as he looked back up to Tod, though, giving another nod before retracting his hand. So that was a contest, huh....

Like this Zorua, for one. It was still sleeping, and it had been a while. Didn't it need to eat? Marx certainly did. He was sure Basil and his other pokemon did, too. He looked at the Zorua thoughtfully, poking at it a bit, but then shrugged, and headed out of the contest hall. He would ask Nurse Joy about it. Their next destination was Slateport, but he planned to somewhat stick to his word with Basil earlier, and train along the way. They needed to get through gyms, too, after all. He was definitely going to have to start figuring out who would be doing what, though.... strategies were pretty different with gyms vs contests, and he doubted he'd be able to have many, if any, pokemon with a moveset that worked well for both. But that was alright. He could work on htat on the way through the desert, while his pokemon were training...

In the meantime! Marx made his way to the pokecenter, headed up to the desk, and handed over most of his pokemon, even though most didn't really need healing. "Hey, uh--" Marx piped up, stopping Nurse Joy just as she was turning to heal his pokemon. She turned back to him in surprise, a quizzical look on her face. "I was wondering if you could help me. I found this pokemon and... it's just been sleeping. Can you check it out? It hasn't woken to eat or drink or anything," he commented, jabbing his thumb at the zorua. Basil blinked and shifted uncomfortably as he suddenly felt himself get put on the spot, his eyes widening a bit. He paused, then moved forward some, so the Zorua was close enough for Nurse Joy to take a look.
"Oh! Certainly! How long has it been with you?" she asked, turning to finish placing his pokemon on the machine for them to be restored, and then turning back to him and Basil. She held her hands out, scooping the zorua from Basil's arms, and withdrawing it. Basil jerked back a bit at the touch, but blinked, his eyes widening some as he suddenly realized, saw, and felt the illusion pull off of him. It was.... strange. He felt like he'd just been caught, but it wasn't like he was in trouble. He hadn't been relying on it or using the illusion. It just felt so weird for it to suddenly... be gone.
Nurse Joy seemed equally, if not more, surprised. "Oh!" She jumped a little as the realization hit her, and she drew the zorua back, staring at Basil. She looked back down at the pokemon, then back to Basil, then back down to the zorua. "I don't think I've seen a pokemon do that before..." she remarked with surprising chipper and kindness, considering her clear shock. She paused, then smiled to Marx. "I'll be right back. Feel free to take a seat and get yourself something to eat," she offered. Marx nodded a little, watching her give Basil one last look, before she headed off.
It took a little while, but Nurse Joy returned. Marx had noticed he had some messages in that time, but hadn't yet answered them-- he'd do that while they were training and on the move, too. He got up and made his way to the counter, looking curiously at Nurse Joy, and down at the still-sleeping pokemon. "I've confirmed that the zorua belongs to you, so you must have caught it at some point without realizing it. I was able to wake it and make sure it was fed and watered, but evidently, it prefers to spend most of it's time sleeping. It will wake on its own, but if it ever goes several days without eating or drinking again, you can use this to wake it," she informed him, handing him a small bottle of what looked like perfume. Marx looked it over curiously, but then tucked it away.
"Uh, alright... Should I... do anything with it? Or about the illusioning thing?" he asked, scratching his head as Basil begrudgingly took the zorua back. The illusion quickly reformed around the grovyle, and he was back to looking human. Nurse Joy smiled. "If you want, you can try, but it seems perfectly harmless. It may just be a dream-effect or something, due to the zorua's sleep habits," she remarked helpfully. Marx nodded a bit, scrunching his mouth off to the side as he looked away in thought. "Alright!" He grinned, looking back at her and perking up, "Thanks Nurse Joy!" And with that... he was off yet again.
