It took all her courage to have this discussion with him. And she had to put a few choice things into kinder words as well. "I am not interested in working in a courtroom every day or taking people's property away from them. Law is abused. I think in this area and in a few others we know that very well. But you don't just study law in order to become a lawyer. You can study specialized laws, choose a specific category, and use that knowledge in order to protect yourself. Its unrealistic to say that I know today when I want to do. I know a few choice directions I am considering, but its not silly to want to know the laws I would be working under for those careers." She cleared the plates away from the table, taking them to the sink. "For example, if I choose to own my own business then it might be wise to know the laws regarding it so that I can avoid issues or simply defend myself, and not have to simply rely on others, hoping that they are being truthful and guiding me correctly. Or saw that I choose to go into social work, then I will have a better understanding of how I can help people. But no...I don't wan to spend every day finding ways to hurt people, so no being a lawyer." It was a bit of a long process to explain things. So she was more so talking about law knowledge as a background, not as a career itself. So that meant she wouldnt spend as much time studying it, more so, choosing a select type of law and studying that. Then she could get a different education to go along with it. But she didnt want her father's business....as kind as it was that he thought she did. She smiled lightly at her father as she put the clean dishes away. "I think that education is a good thing. I would rather have more of it then less." Plus, what if she chose to move off world permanently? They the more she knew the better. And regardless of what career she chose, people would still try to cheat her, hurt her, or just plain take advantage of her. She was a girl, and a pretty one, which meant people would make assumptions about her will and her ability to stand up to them. She needed a basis for making it on her own, knowledge that would give her the ability to function without her parents. "Besides, I cant depend on you and mom to always be here. There will be a time when someone tries to do something, and neither of you can stop it. Which by the way, terrifies mom. When that days comes you might have to hold her hand." She joked lightly. As an only child, her mother was very disturbed by the idea of her daughter being out in the world alone.

He let her finish and then nodded as if he agreed. "I can see you have put a lot of thought into this, I obviously cannot dissuade you with arguments that I though of in a minute and baseless prejudice." He had wanted to test her resolve and she had proved herself capable of defending herself. He knew there was more to law than courtroom drama and helping the mob it was just the easiest thing to dwell on if making an argument against becoming a lawyer. He employed at least one lawyer to help him keep up to date with the latest legislation, the last thing he wanted was to botch up a merger by accidentally going against galactic law. "If I'm being honest I'm in two minds about you leaving. The selfish part of me wants you to stay here, where I can protect you and shield you against the injustices of the world. And another part wants you to go an experience the outside, make new friends and really see what the solar system is like." She was his daughter and he wanted to protect her for as long as he could without ruining her life in the process, then again he hadn't always been around and could hardly stop her if she protested. "All I want is for you to be happy, if you say you want to study law, lets get on the first galactic cruiser and go to Qerus." He was just presuming but Qerus boasted the best university in the galaxy and most people knew it.

She smiled at her father. "I want to at learn the law that I will have to live by." She went back to the table, sitting down once more. She was happy that he wasnt making this too difficult. But she also wished to please him, in any way she could. So while she was a bit sad that he didnt seem so thrilled about it, at least he didnt condemn it. That was a start. "Besides, its not like your mixed up with the type of people who would seek me out just because Im your daughter." She joked, thinking of the more..thug families who had to watch there backs anytime they went somewhere. They were bait for each other, constantly. But her father didnt have a dangerous job. right? "Kelsi was injured walking home a couple days ago. She was supposed to be going with me, but she wont be now. So all only lonesome." She said with a slight smile. So cheerful...how?

"No, nobody cares about a business consultant who likes crushing large corporations. I've paid my dues and that's all that matters." He shrugged, there was no point in lying to her about that, they lived in a really scummy place and it would be insane to think that they skated by without ever coming into contact with the Syndicate. It wasn't as if he went around making enemies or trying to get close to people in power, he had no intention of ever becoming a politician. "That's terrible. Is she going to be alright?" He liked Kelsi, she might have had a messed up family but she had managed to come out relatively normal, he could respect that. "So, do you want me to come with you? I suppose I can make time, but you will have to help me with Ransom's demands this month if we go." He always dreaded dealing with James' case, reading the list of stuff that he had crammed into a month and then verifying that everything was truthful was always a massive pain. "I'll write it off as a business trip and swear you in as my secretary for some pretty large tax write offs." He grinned. Always happy to save money.

"Well do whatever makes you happy daddy just give me a warning if you ever piss off someone with a habit of doing those kinds of things like kidnapping girls or something weird like that. So at least I can be prepared for kicking someone's butt." She said with a wink and a smile, joking...mostly. She stood up from the table once more, not entirely comfortable with the subject of Kelsi's condition, and of course she was choosing not to tell her father that she normally walked the same route with Kelsi, and simply had stayed home that day, in order to catch up on some reading. "Not really, her parents are really upset. Her leg is broken, her neck is pretty bruised, and her face got smashed in pretty good." She was not going to go into detail about what had happened. Kelsi's parents had called her first thing after getting the call from the police. "Anyway, yeah, if you could go with me that would be great. Im fine helping you with stuff, and you can call me whatever you want. Whatever floats your boat." She didnt mind helping him with his work, or with him calling her his secretary. Its not like this was the first time she'd considered offering to help her father. She simply usually was too busy with school or kept busy by her mother.

He smiled but it was cold, if he ever forgot to pay his dues and they went after her instead of him, he didn't quite know what he would do. He certainly wouldn't come out of the experience as the same man, more a savage beast who's entire purpose would been the brutal murders of those who had laid their hands on her. The world knew him as ruthless now, if he turned his hand to revenge he would more than likely become some sort of demon. "Don't worry about that, if anything like that happened I would protect you from it. I'm Action Dad." He switched from being cold and distant to warm and loving in a fraction of a second. "Well, wish her the best from me." There wasn't really very much he could do for the girl except wish her the best and hope it wouldn't happen to Zarah. He quickly decided to change the subject back to universities and the trip he was planning with her. "No, it'll be great. I can get that three per cent discount on tickets and you can get free refills with every meal. The rich don't stay rich by splashing out recklessly." He joked to himself, the rich stayed rich because they trusted him with their money, he was tight fisted with his own money because he was trying to teach her about saving it and not being a brat. It had worked well so far.

"I already did. I figured you'd want me to wish her the best, so I just went ahead and said that to her parents when they called. No use spreading it out." She smiled weakly, and finished up in the kitchen, as she once more looked towards her father. She was well aware that he was tight fisted with money, but they had never struggled. They had never been without food or shelter, and she was not interested in frivolous things. Except books, she had a fondness for books. And she'd tried to get small jobs in the past, but her mother had forbidden it. Of course, her mother had forbidden it because little girls working on their own sometimes got hurt, and her mother was terrified that something might happen to Zarrah, who was her only child. But alas, her mother had a lot of time on her hands to worry some days. Gosh my parents need to get back together... But she knew better then to say anything.

She thought about it a bit. "Well free refills is always great. And lets not get into the habit of using the word rich, it tends to attract very nasty people. Either other rich people or the people who like to steal or take things from them." Some people just took pleasure out of hurting the wealthy. As if they could exact some kind of cosmic justice out of the action. But they did not live richly, and whatever money they had, they had earned. Well, her father had earned. And technically her mother had her own income, and refused to accept a penny from her father. But the woman was happy with her new career. Very happy , actually. Apparently being a chef was a calling for her. Figures, she was always a great cook. "Oh, and there is a message for you over by the desk. I didn't want to touch it so I put it in the black lock box, like usual." The urgent stuff was never put in the lock box, but on the pin board. So only the confidential and not urgent messages went in the lock box. Just phone calls and stuff like that. Nothing big.

Steven smiled, it was good to see that she was on point, private affairs like this were left on the back burner like a good many other things. If it was left down to him the girl would have got a fruit basked somewhere down the line with a get well soon note and another one to apologies for taking so long to send anything. There was a great deal of things that could be forgiven with fruit baskets if they look nice enough. "What's wrong with calling a sheep a sheep? The risk would come whether or not we announce it to the world." He asked about her comment on using the word rich. He got her point but at the same time didn't really want her censoring herself to any extent. It was tragic what had happened to her friend but he had certain policies in place to ensure the safety of his family, after all there was no way he would put them in danger by living in Stratos without first thinking everything out. Her safety was his business and so he made sure it was first class. Her mother knew a great deal about his darker side but he had managed to keep his daughter out of it almost completely. He put the thoughts to the back of his mind once she mentioned he had a message. He got up from the table, unable to leave it alone, it was probably just a report on one of his charges, venture or property, there were something that he liked delivered in person so that he could be sure they wouldn't be intercepted, cyber crime was a big problem in the colony and it was easier to do thing like this sometimes. He opened the locked box, it had a numerical password, it was considerably more impressive than the wooden chest that he used to keep thing in. Slightly safer too. He opened the letter and flipped it open a and read it to himself. "Someone wants to buy Red Speck. Offering quite a hefty sum for it as well, I don't know why, its an irradiated hell hole." He moved the kitchen while speaking. "If it was up to me I'd shove that white elephant on them and be done with it." He grinned and folded up the paper, the letter went into great detail about several of his investments but things concerning James were the most entertaining. "Okay, I want to come with you but I need to sort this out before they get the wrong idea and start to think we're considering the offer. Can you pack some of my things just in case?" He waited to hear her response. It tore him up inside if she was upset and couldn't bear the idea of letting her down so directly.

He was very fortunate that he had a forgiving daughter. "I like the idea of the sheep being able to live in peace." She smiled softly and turned towards the door, making sure the lock was in place before she turned around to face him once more. "I will pack some things for you. Goodnight, Dad." She walked to him and placed a kiss on his cheek, a habit she had adapted as a child, that she had never grown out of. But truth be told, she was not a child. In fact, girls her age were married with children. Scary thought, right? She turned away and walked towards her bedroom, where she gently shut the door. Even when she'd first been a teenager, she had never slammed the door, never yelled. Part of that was that her mother would never have allowed it. It always helps when your parents refuse to stand for it. Makes it easier to avoid the problem as a whole. But they did well. They had an intelligent, well behaved daughter. Plus she was pretty, which was just a bonus. The fiery red hair was a genetic gift from her mother.

He was lucky to have her around, it was a godsend that she hadn't decided to leave with her mother and perhaps something that he didn't understand fully. "Goodnight." He smiled as she left, then retreated into his study for a little overtime. Even though he had finished his paperwork just hours before he felt as if it was piling up again, things needed to be updated and edited, signed, posted, read and responded to. He had to contact the university of Qerus and see if he couldn't arrange an impromptu meeting with one of his more elusive clients, the man hired him to look over the a failing shuttle port on Banton, which he was more than happy to do but then had gone gallivanting across the galaxy without so much as a goodbye. He remodelled the facility and managed to save it but couldn't do anything else without the owners consent. He also wanted to meet several professors and find out if there was any new talent that would be worth investing a little time into, if Zarah was going to take over he would have to find someone who would. He read James' afternoon prayer and text him back that he had two weeks before the end of the month, he didn't like being so hard on him but there was no helping it sometimes.

He lost track of time again, and only realised he'd been up all night when he happened to glance out the window and see the sun rising. It was times like these when he came to hate birdsong, there was just something about their high pitch screaming that rubbed him up the wrong way. He sighed and walked over to the couch, he couldn't be bothered to walk upstairs and instead decided that he would just lay down there for a little nap before Zarah got up. He set his alarm for eleven and drifted off to sleep.

She had spent the rest of the evening talking to Kelsi's parents and finished up a few things for school. When that was done, she had taken a shower and gone to bed. Unlike her father, she loved to hear the birds sing in the morning. In fact, it was her every day alarm clock. When the began to sing, she began to wake. She had always been an early riser, just like her mother. Stretching, she walked over to her closet and pulled out a black pencil skirt and a soft pink blouse. Putting both on, she took careful care to pin up only part of her hair, and slid on some black flats. She looked more business like in the outfit, but truthfully half her closet was business attire. Some of her more advanced classes in school had required the attire, so now she was just used to wearing even on days like today when she had no school. She would be graduating in a matter of weeks. To be exact, two weeks, which is why it was vital that she figure out where she wanted to go to school. Of course, she was graduating a couple months ahead of her classmates, because her mother had insisted on her taking summer classes even though it was not normal around here. It had been her mother's way of keeping her out of trouble. It worked.

Once she was dressed and ready for the day, she made her way to the kitchen and pulled out a few things, reheating them on the stove, before putting the breakfast on the plates and laying them on the table. It was fruit salad and oatmeal. Yes, there was brown sugar in the oatmeal. And as a bonus there was fresh orange juice as well. She checked her phone, as she took her place at the table. A male from her class had repeatedly been trying to ask her out and she had denied him again and again, and for good reason. He was no good , and she knew it. But after Kelsi's...incident, she was not too eager to piss anyone off. People thought it weird that at seventeen years old, she had never been on a date or been with anyone. But truth be told, she just wasnt interested. She'd yet to find anyone she felt had a real future, and that her parents would actually like. Her father's approval was vital to her, and she would never date anyone he didn't like.

Steven woke suddenly from the nightmare he had been having. It started like a normal dream, Zarah was gently trying to break the new that she had got engaged to someone she met on Qerus, it was going well and she had even convinced him give the guy a chance. The dream had shifted violently and they were on the deck of a ship for some reason, who can say perhaps it was that film poster he had driven past on his way home or some suppressed memory trying to surface, either way, Zarah seemed unfazed by the matter and stood next to a figure covered in a sheet. As she pulled it back the figure was revealed to be a satyr with James head which started singing causing the boat to crash and explode. Unfortunately the dream didn't end there, for when he opened his eyes he was at her wedding, surrounded by hundreds of goats and as he ran to stop the ceremony the goats kept getting in his way until they eventually surrounded him and sucked him into the mass. It took a few minutes for him to catch his breath and reassure himself that he was defiantly awake.

He was used to not sleeping or lucid dreaming nightmares so at this point it really didn't bother him, the cause was almost certainly work, but it would take a bit more than night terrors to get him to stop. He walked through the house, kind of like a zombie, bumping into things, groaning and slamming his face into door until they opened. . He managed to locate the shower through some miracle and washed himself, the process was hampered slightly as he didn't recognise any of the products, he ended up holding a bath bomb up to the head and hoping that would work. It did not. After his disastrous shower he stumbled around until her found some clothes, another charcoal grey suit, perfect for every situation. He finally made his way back to the kitchen and collapsed at the table, he was intent on getting his morning coffee but first a little rest. His morning routine was no where near as graceful as Zarah's but on the other hand as soon as he go some caffeine inside him he'd perk right up

Watching her father fumble into the kitchen, she quickly made him a cup of coffee and placed it in front of him. She was rather skilled with making coffee after all these years. Her mother had taught her as a child, but she had not really used the skill up until her mother decided to move out. And it really was a miracle that Zarah had not moved in with her mother, but only one who truly did not know her would remain confused about this. She wanted her father's attention and his approval, but more so then that, she looked up to him. Some people were daddy's little girl and she certainly was. She loved her mother, but there was just something missing in that bond, something that strove her to keep in contact with her father. But she was extremely close with her mother, which was the really cool thing about it all. No matter what happened, she and her mother were still really close. Even when she'd decided to remain with her father. They still talked on a daily basis.

She handed him a spoon, and pointed down to the food, but not speaking. She always let him speak first in the mornings, that way she didn't risk jolting his brain before he was ready. So she started to eat and focused on her food. She ignored her phone and at some point just shut it off completely. Normally she did not bring her phone to the table but with Kelsi in the hospital, she wanted to keep her phone on, because technically she was on the call list if something happened. Oh and the police told her that at some point they would want to ask her about the path home that Kelsi normally took and stuff like that.

After resting his eyes for a minute he opened them to see a fresh cup of coffee, it was like some sort of angel had heard his prayers and answered in the best way possible. He massaged his face, then drank deeply, the bitterness filled him up inside. Finally awake, he looked around the kitchen observing more than just himself, Zarah was there, that explained the coffee, she seemed distracted by something, it could have been her friend but he sensed it was something else. "Thanks. And good morning." He smiled, finishing off his drink, he had developed a steel mouth and could stomach coffee at almost any temperature, some called it a blessing others a curse, either way nobody was writing ballads about it. "Who keeps phoning you?" He asked without thinking while reaching for the paper, he usually didn't pry into her affairs but this was the first time he had heard her phone go off so many time in such a short period of time. It was truly a wonder how newspapers had survived as a form of media, perhaps it was something unique to lunar colonies. "If its important you can get it, I would appreciate it if you didn't get it at the table. Do as I say, not as I do." He realised it was slightly hypocritical asking her to not answer the phone like he had never done it himself but what else could he do, it would have been worse to just encourage it. He flipped open the financials and skimmed over the text, there wasn't anything there he didn't already know but it was interesting to see what was being reported on and what was being swept under the carpet.

She had turned the phone off by that point and looked over at her father. Should she answer him or deflect to another topic? Well that was similar to lying which was something she never did. "Its not important." She said, taking another bite of her breakfast. "Just a boy in heat." She joked, though she rather enjoyed the joke herself. It was very spot on with how he was acting. She finished her breakfast, and got up, taking her plate to the sink where she washed it off and put it away. That was one of her habits as well: cleanliness. She hated having a dirty house and since her mom had moved out, she had made it her chore to keep everything clean and tidy. A good working and living environment was a clean one. She could not stand the house being messy or in a state of disarray and she was the exact match of her mother on that one, who also preferred the house to be clean. "Don't worry dad, I have a mind of my own. I wont follow all your habits." She said with a smile to show that she was joking.
