~Tinker’s Manual~ ~"What I Want to Be"~ ~Reasons for Choosing the Civilian Path~ Shenra bustled down the streets of the Ashen City, huddled in her coat and hat her grandmother had made her for the winter solstice, heading home from school. As she reached the bottom of the large hill, she heard the trolley clanging behind her. She turned and jumped on as it passed, as she usually did if the trolley came her way at that point in her journey home. She smiled at the conductor, paid her coppers for the fair, and sat back next to the gearman as the trolley chugged up the hill.
Shenra loved riding the trolley. It amazed her as to what made a city full of trollies run, and wished her mother could take her all the time when the machines that pulled the trolley cables needed to be fixed.
“Why, hello Miss. Silverleaf.” Said Lunoc the gearman. “It’s nice to see you again. It’s been a while.”
Shenra turned in her seat and shifted so she was kneeling facing the gearman in the middle of the car. The conductor gathered the coins and ruled the passengers. The gearman was the heart of control of the trolley. Lunoc was big and had large muscled arms, the essentials of a gearman, but despite his large looming presence, he would give Shenra and the other children candies and let them ask him questions when he wasn’t busy. Once he even told Shenra she was possibly the most curious child she’d ever seen on his routes.
“Ma had her babies!” Shenra said smiling brightly, “We all went to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for a while so they could be born there!”
“Well I’ll be!” He smiled brightly, “It’s big sister Shenra I see here then! How about a couple of rings for the new Silverleaf’s!” Lunoc reached up and rang the trolley bell twice two times. Shenra giggled happy her friend rang the bell for her new baby sister and brother. “I guess now, if they are anything like their big sister, I’ll have quadruple the questions when they grow up!”
Shenra laughed out loud. Her friend was teasing her, but rightfully so. Her mother was always worried she’d ask the man too many questions when he was working.
“Your stop is here Miss. Silverleaf.” Lunoc said. He reached into his pocket and pulled out three candies this time, “One for your Ma and Pa too in celebration.”
“Thanks!” Shenra said happily taking the candies.
She stood up on the seat, rang the bell, and with laughter from Lunoc following her, Shenra took her school books and popped off the trolley with the air of child raised in the city.
She ran down the street that led to the house. Despite being several long blocks till her home, Shenra was excited to get home as she was every day. But she wanted to see how her sister and brother were doing. It had been the first few days since they had moved back from their grandparents house to their home, and she wanted to see if they were doing well. Her father and mother had returned to their jobs. Well, her mother was easing back into her job to say the least. Her father didn’t want her overdoing things till she was at least a month behind the birth. Not that would stop her mother, she would just “take it into consideration”.
Shenra turned down the street she lived on and broke into a run as she saw her large house at the end of the circled street. There was a small park across from her house that was tucked at the back. Her house was attached to her mother’s tinker shop were people came through to do business with her. Her house was a three story house but was as narrow as it was tall due to the tinker shop next to it taking up a lot of space
She ran up the steps and entered the door with her usual flourish, but as she went to slam the door shut, she caught it in time to shut it softly. She had to remember that now there were babies in the house, she had to be quieter since they tended to sleep a lot.
She went through the house and placed her books on the old scrubbed wooden table in the kitchen, and as she went upstairs, she shed her coat, hat, and shoes in her room as she made her way to her parent’s room where the babies were at the moment.
She opened the door slowly and saw her mother holding one of them as she fed it from a bottle. She looked up from her job and smiled at Shenra.
“Hello love.” She whispered as Shenra came over to her mother.
It was her baby sister Reinka her mother was feeding. She could tell by the tuffs of blue hair on her head, and her sky blue eyes that were sort of peeking open. Apparently the little one was almost finished with her meal and ready for more sleep. Shenra placed a finger on her soft cheek then went over to one of the low cribs and peeked in on her baby brother, Ralina. She placed a finger on his soft cheek and he moved a bit, then settled down still asleep.
Shenra smiled and beamed at her baby siblings.
“How was school?” her mother asked softly placing the bottle down and putting her sister over her shoulder to burp her.
“It was ok.” Shenra said softly as well. She didn’t want to wake the babies. She went over to her parent’s bed, laid on her stomach, and watched her mother as she waggled her feet in the air. She scrunched her nose and said, “We did art today. I don’t like drawing without a reason. And the colors came out wrong…”
“What were you drawing?”
“We had to do a ‘Picture of Serina’. And we couldn’t draw the Ashen City.” Shenra said as she watched her sister begin to drool. She smiled at the action and continued, “So I did hills with flowers with a lake… But the flower’s colors came out all wrong…”
“Nothing has to be perfect,” her mother said wiping Rei’s mouth, “Will you bring it home tomorrow?”
“Yes.” Shenra said as she heard her sister burp. She giggled and said, “It had to dry.”
“I can’t wait to see it.” Her mother said smiling at her. Shenra smiled as her mother placed her sister in her crib, “Ok Rei, time to sleep a while.”
Shenra pushed herself up to see her sister in her crib and saw her yawn as her mother patted her softly. Her mother then shooed Shenra out of the room and down to the kitchen.
“What’s your homework for today?” her mother said going to the counter and pulling the meat buns out of the warming oven.
“I have to write about what I want to be when I grow up.” Shenra said sitting in front of her books, “I don’t really know what I want to be…”
“It’s alright.” Her mother said smiling at her and placing two buns in front of her, “Just pick something you enjoy doing.” She kissed the top of Shenra’s head and said, “I’ll be in the shop, come and get me if the little one’s wake or you need me.”
“Ok Ma!” Shenra said smiling after her mother.
She looked back at her books and scrunched her face up. She didn’t really know what she wanted to be. But she took her ma’s advice and thought about the things she enjoyed to do. She loved to take things apart and make things better. But she enjoyed making things too, not just take things apart.
She took a meat bun off the plate and chewed in thought about what she would write about.

Shenra was helping her mother with dinner when her father came home. He currently was a tutor for three boys who lived in a well to do neighborhood across the city near the Citadel. It didn’t take him long to get to the house, but he was tired every day he came home. But every time he had a smile on his face, only saying that his greatest joy was being at home.
Shenra greeted him with a hug and after putting his things away, chatting about school.
“And we had homework where we had to write about what we wanted to do when we grew up.” Shenra announced as they entered the kitchen, “I’m still not sure what I want to do, but I finished it.”
“Oh?” her father said with a kind smile, “And what did you write about?”
Shenra bit her lower lip and studied the floor.
“Nothing really.” She said.
She looked up at her father and he had that look that said he didn’t believe her, so she went and got her paper that she had tucked into her books. She joined her father in the kitchen and gave him the paper.
She sat back at the kitchen table and then began to study the patterns on the top of the table. Her father was quiet as he read the short paper. Shenra waited nervously to see what he had to say.
“You really mean this?” he said looking at her. Shenra nodded shyly. Her father smiled and said, “I see no reason why you can’t do this. Though, you should let your mother know.”
“Know what?” Shenra’s mother said wiping her hands on a towel as she moved towards the kitchen table.
“What your daughter intends to do with her life.” Her husband said smiling brightly. He handed Shenra’s paper to her and said, “Read it for yourself.”
Shenra felt even shyer as her mother read it aloud.
“What I Want to Be. By Shenra Silverleaf.”
“I want to be a tinker, and builder like my Ma. She gets to create things that people need and want. I want to help people too with things I can create, even if it’s just for their enjoyment and it doesn’t really serve purpose. My Ma said I should do something I love and enjoy, and I like to do these things a lot. I even get to spend time with my Ma in her shop, and that’s fun too.”
“You feel this way Shenra?” her mother said placing the paper on the table. Shenra nodded, feeling rather shy that her ma had read that. She smiled and said, “If you really want to, I can teach you a bit.”
“You can?” Shenra said excitedly. Her wings popped out and she smiled happily, “I would love to!”
Her parents laughed and her mother bent down and hugged her daughter.
“I would be honored if you would like to be my student.”
“Yes!” Shenra said hugging her mother back, “I want to be the best tinker ever!”~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date Posted: March 20th, 2015 Words: 1,822

~Tinker’s Manual~ ~"Safety First"~ ~A Solo Master Teaching Requirement~ Shenra opened the door from the house into her mother’s shop slowly.
Today was the first day of lessons in her tinkering. She wondered what her mother was going to teach her. Having followed her mother into her workshop since she could toddle, Shenra knew most of every inch of the shop. She knew the names and places of the tools her mother used the most and some of the less used ones as well. What was it her mother could teach her that she didn’t already know?
“Shenra, is that you?” she heard her mother call from the back of the shop.
“Yes Ma!” Shenra said happily stepping into the shop, “I pulled my hair back as you asked!”
She shut the door and went into her mother’s workroom. She found the woman looking at an order slip and in deep thought. She smiled and waited for her attention.
“Oh, there you are.” Said her mother looking down at her. She smiled and said, “Ready for your first lesson?”
“Yes!”
“Good.” Her mother said smiling. She put the order slip down and then sat Shenra in a chair and said, “We’ll go over basic safety today… But you know most of it already.”
Shenra sat happily as she watched her mother bring out her sheron hide apron, and her goggles that she wore.
“You know why we use our apron and goggles.” she said as she held them out, “So that in case something spills it doesn’t ruin our clothes, or if a tool misses its mark it doesn’t tear them either. And our goggles help protect our eyes when dealing with metal shavings or we use the welder.” Shenra nodded and her mother continued, “We also pull our hair back or pin it up so that it’s not in the way.” Her mother put the apron and goggles away and then pulled out the little leather hood she wore too, “Sometimes I wear the hood when I use the visor so that my hair doesn’t get caught, but it’s practical for any other use too.”
She put back the little hood and then turned to her workbench. Shenra turned the chair towards the bench too and looked at the array of tools that were lined up all neat in their holders or cubbies.
“Keeping your tools put away is another way of staying safe, as well as maintaining them. A clean tool will not only work better, but it will last a long time too.” Her mother then stepped over to the welder that she used and said, “You know my welder is a special tool, and I keep it maintained all the time so that I don’t have an accident while using it.” She looked at Shenra with a sad look and said, “The one accident I did have with this was not from lack of care, but lack of paying attention.”
“It’s ok Ma.” Shenra said jumping from the chair and going up and hugging her mother, “I know you didn’t do it on purpose.”
Shenra remembered most of that day, she didn’t remember the explosion, but she remembered her mother being scared and then in pain. But what she did learn was that she should take care of her machines and tools. If she did this and checked the welder often while she used it, then she wouldn’t have any problems with it.
“Thank you my love.” She said hugging the little girl back. Her mother broke the hug and smiled at her daughter, “Just remember that you should be careful while you are working, not just with the welder. A lot of accidents happen to tinkers and engineers because they weren’t taking precautions or care with their tools.”
“I know Ma.” Sherna said smiling. She then looked at the welder and said, “When do I get to use it?”
Her mother laughed and said, “Not till you are a bit older my dear, and that’s because I was only older that you were when my father introduced me to such things.”
Shenra nodded. She understood she would have to wait to get to do some things she wanted with the welder because she was still small. And she knew that even though she had the right amount of respect and caution with such tools, she still probably couldn’t control it as much as her mother, or an older person, could.
“Shall we get started with naming tools and how to care for them then?” her mother said.
“Yes!” Shenra said with a smile.
Because the first thing a tinker learned was safety before any actual work.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date Posted: March 20th, 2015 Words: 772

~Tinker’s Manual~ ~"Plan of Attack"~ ~A Profession Learning Requirement~ For most of Shenra’s short life, she had been enamored of her mother’s drawing board. It was filled with papers waiting to be taken down and used in plans to create the most beautiful things. Ma said she helped design the house they lived in on this board, along with her cradle, and also the extra cradle Ma had made for one of the twins. When Shenra wanted to be with her mother, she would come into the shop and sit either at this board or on her mother’s lap as she drew.
Many things had come to life on this board.
Ideas were not stuck inside someone’s head when it came down onto paper with the help of the oddly shaped stencils and rulers that helped draw a plan out.
“Today I’ll introduce you to drafting.” Shenra’s mother said as she sat on her tall swivel chair. Shenra sat in a similar chair next to her mother. She felt so tall in this chair whenever she sat in it. Her mother took a hold of the strange arm like thing the drawing board had and moved it down so Shenra could see. “This is called a drafting machine.” She flexed the ruler thing and said, “This is the protractor, and helps create smooth lines while still having the freedom of motion around the drawing.”
She introduced other things like the stencils that had all sorts of curves.
“Sometimes I have to make my own curved stencils.” She said lifting up a wooden one, “Having the right curves in a picture can make the difference in the finished product.”
Shenra took the stencil and ran her finger along the curves. It felt like her fingers were flying though air. Did the right curves really make a difference?
Then her mother brought out the box that contained her pens.
“Each pen can make different size lines.” Her mother said opening the box. There were many pens in there, some had a nob on the side, and some didn’t have an end, yet there were ends in their own slots near the sides of the box. Each end had a different size tip. “Each line has to help convey your ideas to the person who is making the object.” She pointed to the ends with different sized tips and said, “And each line you draw means something.”
Her mother put away the pens and then showed her some of the drawings on her drawing board. One was a drawing of a fountain plan for a noble family. When finished it would be marvelous.
“You will learn what lines mean what as time goes by, but see how thick some lines are compared to others? That’s why you need different size tips sometimes. I need to tell the people who make the part I need what I want, and if I use the wrong size tip it gets misinterpreted. It’s why I need to be sure what I wish to 'say'.”
“So you tell people what you want just by drawing something?” Shenra said. She could do that it seemed easy enough.
“Sort of.” Her mother said smiling, “But I still need to write some things down on them as well.” She pointed to some numbers and writing that pointed to one of the lines, “I need to know math, a lot of math, and common abbreviations and symbols.” She then patted Shenra’s head and said, “You will come to understand it all if you study hard at the work I give you. Tinkering and engineering is a lot more than just creating. You have to be patient and think it out.”
Shenra looked to the drawing board and nodded her head. She would work hard with what her mother gave her so she could be as good as her Ma.
“Don’t worry!” Shenra said smiling, “I’ll do my best!”~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date Posted: March 26, 2014 Words: 647

~Tinker’s Manual~ ~"House Calls"~ ~A Profession Learning Requirement~ Watching her mother from her parent’s bed, Shenra peeked at her mother’s reflection in the floor length mirror as she tugged and pulled on her nice clothes, and moved strands of her bright yellow hair. Her father always teased her mother about her hair, saying it was a wild as she was. He would always end the teasing with a kiss and saying he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Shenra looked at her own blue hair in the mirror and scrunched her nose. It was just like her father’s, it was straight and blue. But his hair was cut short, while hers was as long as her mother’s. She went to reach up and tug at a few strands, but remembered her mother’s warning not to mess it up after it had been brushed and pulled back in a long braid.
She huffed and squirmed in her nice clothes that she always wore to the temple. She did not like their confining tightness and she couldn’t move or play in them because they were nice clothes that her parents only replaced when necessary.
Today was not a day her family was going to the temple, but Shenra was accompanying her mother on a house call to the Dovva ambassador’s residence. She had been contacted by the citadel representatives to look over the house and see if it could be up graded with indoor plumbing, much like this house was. Ma was famous across the town for her skills at getting renovations done, so it was no wonder that the citadel representatives had written. Or at least it seemed that way to Shenra.
“There!” her mother said tugging her shirt one last time, “That looks about right!”
Her nice clothes consisted of a yellow shirt that had tiny flowers on it, and a brown colored vest. She had on some brown leather pants that were almost new, and hugged her mother’s figure. She had on nice boots too that had brass buttons in a row on the side. Shenra’s own outfit was a blue dress that had lace on the colors. She had on shoes that buttoned along the sides and were pinching her feat because they were almost as new as her mother’s pants. She did not like them one bit, but such was life when one had to go on a call to an ambassador’s house, even if it wasn’t formal.
“Ready Shenra?” her mother said turning around with a wide smile.
“Yes!” Sherna said hopping off the bed, “Let’s go!”
Soon the two were on their way to the fine houses near the citadel and heart of the Ashen City.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shenra looked around the marble facade of the ambassador’s mansion. It was huge for such a place! But what she had heard about the place was that the Dovva family who was assigned the task of forging relations with the Orderite people were rarely the same people for a long period of time. Whoever was elected to the task was to live here in order to stay in close contact with Aevah Avi in case their advice was needed.
According to her mother’s letter from the Citadel, the current ambassador had a wife and two small children, a boy who was older than Shenra and a girl about her age. Perhaps they could become friends?
“Don’t gawk.” Her mother whispered to Shenra as they entered the front door.
Shenra abruptly faced forward and closed her mouth. She was here to learn the trade, not snoop around someone’s house.
She saw movement around the upper floor’s landings, maids and footmen going about their business, Dovva and Orderite alike. The butler, a tall, imposing, grave looking Dovva had shown them in and taken the letter that her mother had produced and read it silently.
“You are Ms. Orina Silverleaf?” he said. He looked Shenra’s mother over, lifted his nose and then said, “Yes, Lord Peiyova said he would show you around personally.” He then looked down at Shenra and raised an eyebrow. Shenra stepped closer to her mother and tried to hide from the gaze of the older man.
“My daughter, Shenra.” Her ma said, “She is learning the trade and I brought her along to see how I conduct house calls. She will be by my side the entire time.”
“I’m sure.” said the butler with a loud sniff as he looked back to Shenra’s mother, “If you will follow me Ms. Silverleaf.”
As the butler turned, Shenra went to stick her tongue out at him, but her mother caught her and gave her a little nudge and a warning look. Shenra sighed and followed her mother and the butler.
They entered a dark paneled room with lots of books on shelves, not only on one floor, but the floor above as well. It smelled of old books, leather, and smoke from cigars. Shenra scrunched her nose at the smell, but stopped as she saw a tall Dovva looking out the window next to a desk.
“Ms. Orina Silverleaf, my lord,” the butler said, then he looked at Shenra again and sniffed, “And her daughter Shenra.”
“Thank you Daymic,” said the tall Dovva turning from the window, “I’ll ring if I need you.”
“Very well my lord.” Said the butler as he bowed and retreated quietly.
“Lord Peiyova.” Shenra’s mother bowed at the waist. Shenra dipped in a curtsy since she was wearing a dress. Her mother straightened and said, “A pleasure my lord. I was told you wished to talk to me regarding the modernization of this house?”
“Please sit down Ms. Silverleaf.” He looked at Shenra, “You as well Miss. Shenra.” He sat down across the desk from Shenra and her mother. He looked formidable from that place, as if searching for some secret weapon to use against Shenra and her mother. His white eyes and horns offset by midnight hair that had sprinkles of white ones mixed in. It looked as if his head was a starry sky. He looked from mother, to daughter, then to mother again. “You brought a young one with you I see. Surely you have… older workers that could help you?”
“My daughter is learning how to be an engineer like myself, my lord.” Said Shenra’s mother with a smile, “This was a special house call I was making, and thought what better way of teaching my daughter how to work with high ranking nobles than starting at the top.” She chuckled, “I am sure that only Aevah Avi herself or her aides would be higher ranking people other than yourself.”
Lord Peiyova only lifted an eyebrow, and a hint of the corner of his mouth curving was all that showed his amusement from her mother’s statements.
He nodded and said, “To teach one’s young is a fine thing.” He then smiled at Shenra and said, “Surely you possess as much talent as your mother to consider becoming an engineer?”
“I just like to make things better.” Shenra said quietly. She didn’t know how to speak to a noble… She’d rarely even seen one let alone talked to one.
“That is good enough to start with.” Said Lord Peiyova with an approving smile and nod. He then turned to Shenra’s mother and said, “Now, let us speak about what I wish to be done in the house and then I will show you the rooms to see if it can be done.”
Shenra’s mother and Lord Peiyova then stood over his desk looking at the blue prints of the mansion. Shenra stood on a stool Lord Peiyova had brought out of the library shelves, and watched as her mother and the Dovva lord traced lines with their fingers and spoke about what could be done. Shenra knew how blueprints were made.
There was a special way of making them: First you had to go into a dark room where there was little light. Then you coat the paper with a solution of two chemicals, and then put the print that you want to record over the dried piece of paper and put a large sheet of glass over it and clamp it down, and then set it down in the sun. Then you had to wait a few minutes, then you washed it in water, and you had your blueprint.
“Do you mind if I take this with me when I leave?” Shenra’s mother said as they ended their discussion. “I can use it to make my own layouts of the house and figure in the systems of pipes. I’ll bring it back with a new blueprint for yourself if any repairs to the house are needed in the future.”
“Very well then.” Lord Peiyova said allowing Shenra’s mother to roll up the blue prints, “If you would follow me then, we will go and visit the places I wish to be converted into… Bathrooms?”
“Yes, bathrooms.” Shenra’s mother said smiling, “It’s a little strange at first, but you will get used to the term.”
The Dovva lord chuckled and led the way out of the library, and shut the door behind Shenra as she exited.
Finally! They would explore the house!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once on the second floor, Shenra looked out one of the tall windows and out across the back grounds. Everything was beginning to bloom, and looked inviting. Her attention was drawn back by Lord Peiyova’s voice.
“I want one across from the nursery.” Said Lord Peiyova, “It would help immensely where the children are concerned.” He opened a door that showed a medium sized room for a house so big, “The nurses and tutors could use it as well if anything happened in the nursery and need a room to clean up.”
“Excellent idea.” Her mother said. She stepped into the room and looked around. “This will do well. I will direct you to an architect that I work with. He is a fair man and works hard.”
“Good.” Lord Peiyova said, “Money is no option.”
Shenra noted her mother said nothing after that, but introduced the subject of the placement of the next bathroom. Shenra was about to follow when she heard giggling coming from her left. She turned and saw a crack from a door and saw lavender eyes peeking out at her. She heard a gasp, and the door shut quickly.
Her attention caught, Shenra went over to the door and opened it. Inside was a room full of toys and a rather large bed.
There was also a little Dovva girl sitting in the middle of that bed, and an older boy sitting at the head of the bead, leaning back against the headboard. The little girl had lavender eyes and black hair, but white horns. The boy had deep red eyes and horns, with a red tint on his hair, but held shades of black. Both looked at her as if she would burst into flames at that moment.
“Hello!” Shenra said smiling. She looked to the little girl and said, “I saw you peeking!” She stepped closer and said, “You really have pretty eyes.”
“T-thank you.” Said the girl as she blushed.
“She’s just a baby.” Said the boy with red eyes, “Still can’t make up her mind what clan she wants.”
“Papa said that I can wait as long as I need.” Said the girl closing her eyes and lifting her nose up to the boy. She then turned and looked to Shenra, “My name is Maldya, and this is my brother Tayre.” She smiled and said, “You have pretty eyes too. But you are not Dovva.” She turned her head in question, “Why are you in the house?”
“My name’s Shenra. Shenra Silverleaf, my Ma is going to work on the house!” Shenra said smiling, “You’ll have running water and won’t have to wait for servants to bring your bath, or to wash up.”
“Really?” Maldya said her eyes widening, “That sounds amazing!”
“Not so much.” Tayre said under his breath.
Shenra rolled her eyes and said, “Well, it is to me!” She looked at Maldya and said, “I’ve got to go, but maybe I will see you around the house when ma brings me here.”
“I do hope so!” said Maldya smiling, “It gets so boring playing with only my brother.”
Shernra watched as his brother mocked his sister behind her back. She looked eschew at him, but smiled back at the girl. She waved goodbye, and exited the room. A good thing too since her mother and Lord Peiyova were just outside looking for her. After apologies and explanations, the lord expressed that it might be a good thing for his daughter and son to have a playmate while they were in the Ashen City, and extended an invitation for Shenra to visit whenever she wished.
Shenra was delighted!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shenra and her mother left the mansion in the late afternoon. Shenra’s mother took her to a small restaurant as a treat for being extra good, and thus ended the day by stepping up her house steps just as night was falling.
Tuckered out, Shenra washed her face before climbing into bed and falling asleep before her parents could come and tuck her in.
Both parents looked over their small girl, both smiling and imagining their little girl’s future.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date Posted: March 28, 2014 Words: 2,223
~A Tinker's Project~ ~The Older Brother~ ~A Solo RP~ The spring afternoon sun warmed Shenra as she lay on her back on a blanket in the back gardens of the Dovva ambassador’s mansion. Next to her Maldya did the same and both girls were trying to make sense of the clouds passing by above them.
“It’s a bowi!” Shenra said.
“No, it’s a huge bouken!” Maldya said thowing her arms wide into the air. She then pointed to a bigger, shapeless cloud and said, “And it’s running across the sky trying to outrun the larger bowi!”
Shenra giggled then sighed placing her hands on her chest. It was fun to be at the mansion and play. However, when she came with her mother, it was all work. The Peiyova family was nice, but a little snobbish at times. Well, all except Maldya. She was very sweet and loved to have adventures in the back gardens of the mansion, even if they were pretend. She wasn’t allowed to leave the house because of her important status, so Shenra came here to play with her.
Though, sometimes her older brother spoiled the fun.
What was it about that boy that made Shenra want to pull out her hair? He would always be interrupting them! Shenra and Maldya had only a short time to play when she came over as she had a governess that gave her lessons in the afternoon. It was a short time for Shenra to play, but it was nice having a big yard to run around in.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a flame of fire passing over her rather closely. Shenra gasped and lay still until it went out. She sat up and glared at the laughing Dovva boy. Tayre Peiyova was sanding some distance behind them rather amused by his trick on his sister and her friend. Apparently he didn’t notice Shenra, and just kept laughing. Shenra looked to her friend and saw her sitting up hanging her head. Shenra knew she was trying not to cry.
Tayre and Maldya were different as night and day. Tayre was unpredictable and rowdy, where Maldya was calm and serene. She would make a fine lady one day, and Shenra hoped that she would get to see her friend outside the plane again when they were grown up.
“You two are priceless.” Said Tayre as he calmed down, “Both scared of a little fire.”
“We are not Firani like you!” Maldya said. She stuck her nose in the air and said, “We can get burned easily, then what would papa say?”
Tayre looked a little hurt at that statement, Shenra said, but then he stuck his nose in the air and said, “At least I’m not a clanless baby like you!”
Maldya turned her head away and waved her hand in dismissal, then took Shenra’s hand and marched off with her to the far wall of the gardens. Shenra turned and watched as Tayre scowled and, as he kicked at the ground, turned and went back into the house.
“Will he be ok?” Shenra asked turning to her friend. The boy just looked lonely she thought.
“He’ll be fine.” Maldya said assuredly, “He generally gets over it soon enough. He keeps saying he’s a big boy, so much better than me. I know he won’t be upset too long."
Shenra took one last look at the back of the boy walking into the house and thought that he seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. Pity for him did not come, but the feeling she should do something to make him smile entered instead.
Shenra nodded, turned back to her friend to play some more, and felt the resolve to put the plan into action! Plan: Happy Dragon!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Date Posted: March 29, 2014 Words: 624
