Forrest discovers the bitter taste of love and loss for the first time at a young age, when his mother and father's long time companion and most trusted guard dog Montgomery- informally known as Monty- finds himself beneath the tires of a truck. Distantly, the young boy can remember the sour feeling that had grown in his gut like a bushel of rotted fruit when he first found the old dog's form, lying still in the middle of the road; eyes staring straight up at a summer sky so blue it made the moment Fortest realized that his old friend would never again be able to wake him with his low hhhhurrruff of a bark even more devastating.
Still, the sour things he had felt during Monty's burial couldn't quite compare to the torrential downpour of emotions his mother and father's funeral provided.
He stood, stoic; little spine poised so straight it was a wonder the thing didn't snap. He's staring straight ahead from his spot in the very front pew, eyes wider and blanker than they've ever been. He's still, too, and perhaps that is the most worrisome thing of all as- until that very moment, Forrest Q. Blair had never been still for more than a few minutes and now... his muscles seemed to be constricted, as though he were a snake- coiled so tight and so small, one was left only to wonder just how exactly it was possible for another being to be. so. still. His parents pass him by in matching black boxes. The first of the sobs begin, as his gran had warned. Forrest sees the procession from only the very edge of his periphery.
He wants to shrink away from all of this, to envelope himself in shadow and disappear from life just as his mother and father had. Everywhere, there is sorrow; everywhere, there is despair. Every memory of his parents brings pain, heartache, loneliness.
