The sudden enthusiasm from the boy would have encouraged a chuckle from the lad if he felt it was appropriate. However, he stifled the sound to simply ask a question.
"Do I have permission to call you 'Briar,' or would you prefer 'Mr. Mackenzie?'"
Considering how the child had been earlier, Howl had a guess as to what the acceptable name would be.
Before he got the answer, the clerk returned with two bags, one quite large, and the other about the size of a lunch sack.
"Ah! If you could give me one moment, Mr. Mackenzie!" Releasing the child's hand, he went to tend to the matter of payment. The clerk and the lad spoke softly, their voices just sounding like murmurs in the bakery. A single cookie was pulled out as Howl grabbed onto the larger package.
"Well... it has been a pleasure, young sir! Perhaps we will meet again!"
Taking up his large package, the lad made his way to the door, exiting the establishment.
As the clerk would explain in a few moments, Mr. Wickham had paid for the dozen cookies and left all but one for the child.

"Briar" Briar said decisively in answer to the mister's - to Mister Wickham's - question on what to call him. "Mister Mackenzie's way too wordy and 'sides that's what everyone calls Dad." Okay not everyone everyone - but lots and lots of people did.
Bakery guy had come back though whilst he'd been speaking though and Mister Wickham had gone to talk to him so Briar wasn't sure if he'd heard him.
Briar waited with all the patience he could muster, knowing that it would be his turn once the bakery guy finished up with the other - but it was hard because he could almost taste the cookies - and he could certainly smell the tell-tale smell of cookies that had been recently baked from where he stood.
He had gotten as far as deciding that he would eat one once they were paid for and his and save the second for later when Mister Wickham finished up with the bakery guy.
He called out a "Bye" of his own as Mister Wickham took up a large package and departed before turning his attention to his much smaller order of cookies...
Only to find himself staring at the bakery guy in surprise when the other explained that Mister Wickham had already taken care of his order.
He was was even more surprised when he opened up the bag that the bakery clerk handed over, his reddish eyes wide in stunned surprise as he took in the contents of veritable awesomeness that lay within.
Eventually however he managed to get out "When you see the mister - I mean Mister Wickham can you tell him thanks from me?" A pause and then he added "Because this is really awesome - really, really awesome."
He fished out a cookie for himself - the one he'd promised himself - and headed to the door, precious cookies to hand as he decided to skip the library and head in the direction of home instead.
The gift had been an unexpected one - but it was really, really good unexpected and definitely one for his bestest list.
