Vasile's ear's pricked at the sound of raised voices. There was hardly any drama in their lazy little hamlet, so the scared and concerned whinnies of Xandir and Sequoyah were enough to get his attention. He looked up to where his daughter Seibel was flying and noticed she had also gone over to the herd elders as well. "There's a fire?" he asked, picking up a few words. "What should we do?" Unlike the others, he didn't have any immediate family up in the Thunderbird Herd, but he wasn't comfortable with just standing back and letting something happen. "We should go warn them? Someone with wings maybe?" Then he felt a bit stupid for suggesting that, because he himself didn't have wings.

Louvre felt for a moment that perhaps his prayers had been answered. Something was happening!? He as quick to his hooves and met where the group of Soquili were gathering and tried to butt his nose in and listen. There was talk of a fire up on Thunderbird Mountain, and sure enough, even as they talked the think black smoke was getting more and more visible over the trees, and the orange and red flames were licking over some of the tallest trees. He swallowed, suddenly feeling tremendously guilty for hoping for some excitement. He obviously didn't want anyone to get hurt - even those distant and snobby Soquili who lived on Thunderbird mountain - and even worse, he was suddenly very worried about fast the fire would spread with the drought going on. "I wish I could help," he offered, smally. He didn't have wings either, and to be honest he didn't find the idea of rushing into a fire very appealing.

Versaille's eyes went to his mate, Dahlia. He wasn't prepared for emergencies - he had lived a fairly easy-going life. The idea of a fire was foreign to him - what did they expect him to do? He didn't have wings, like Vasile had suggested. Additionally, he didn't know the whole scope of drama and history with the Thunderbird Herd that many in his herd did. But looking at his wife, the masculine pride in his chest swelled; he had to do something? Anything? "What can I do to help?" he chimed in, joining the others in the impromptu meeting that had started. He nudged his way to the front, wanting to show Dahlia that he was being brave and proactive; that he considered this herd his home, just as she did. She knew her parents had strong ties to the Soquili up on Thunderbird Mountain and he would march up there on foot with Sumi-e and Sequoyah if that is what they asked of him.

 (Wicahpi)
At the suggestion that ponies with wings do something to help, Wicahpi felt his heart flutter; it was a mix of fear and excitement. It's not that he didn't want to help, and if having wings meant he was the best pony for the job he would do so, but he didn't know what what expected of him. What did they expect hi to do? Wicahpi was still a young stallion and not very strong with flying.
"What should I do?" he asked his father, looking over to Sequoyah. "Do you want me to fly up here?"
He tried to shake off his nervousness, pawing at the ground and tossing his mane as the other Soquili spoke around him. He was the newcomer, the young one. Ultimately whatever they decided to do wouldn't be up to him. "Father?" .

It was Ami's turn to be nervous, and antsy. She was horrible with confrontation and drama. She couldn't stand to see anything hurt - not Soquili, not animals, not even plants if she could avoid it. She didn't even step on much grass if she could help it - and she preferred to ear bark and fruit and leaves than anything that would kill the plant.
But now the thick smoke from the mountain was getting impossible to ignore, and she just new there were going to be Soquili and forests alike that would be in peril.
But she had no idea what to do. What was she supposed to do? She barely spoke a word to anyone but Sequoyah and her son, Wicahpi. When he volunteered to fly up to the mountain her heart seized up. She was proud of him for being so bbrave, and she didn't want anyone to get hurt, but she was terrified that her only true son would hurt himself. He was so young!

She got closer to Amitorlin and Wicahpi and the others discussing the fire. Her blue eyes looking up into the shy and her mouth pulling down into a frown as she watched. This was bad. This was really, really bad.
She had no wings, so she couldn't be of any help there. But she knew she had to help somehow. She gave a little whinny of worry - were her parents going to storm up onto the mountain? Getting hurt? Maybe getting killed? She wished there were more unicorns around - maybe even an alicorn? There was Candy Striper but the Gods bless her - she was still learning.
She immediately went to father up her family. She trotted around and pressed her nose up against Versailles soft muzzle. "Are you going to go?" she asked, trying to keep her voice low and not to alarm the others. She didn't want him to, but she would understand why he needed to.

Calligraphy stayed silent, she was nearly as silent and quiet as her father. But she knew if Sequoyah called on him he would go - march straight up into the mountains and into the fire.
Worse yet, of course, was Calligraphy's great secret. Her lover and lifemate, Onibi Storm, lived on that mountain. They kept their relationship secret, even from the other members of the Valley Herd, because they both knew that if Stormwild or Balrog got wind of their romance, there would be hell to pay. She had no desire to take Onibi Storm away from his family... but at the same time there was no way they would understand; that they would accept her.
She wondered with Onibi Storm was all right, but she had to bite her tongue. She closed her eyes and sent up a little prayer for his safety - the Thunderbird or whoever would listen.

Candy Striper looked at the blackening sky, and her heart was seizing in her chest. "I want to help," she cried out quickly, trotting over to Sequoyah. "Are you going? Can I help? Please!" She stopped her feet, her tiny little hooves, in determination. She didn't have wings, so she would have to take the mountain on foot - but so would Sequoyah and Sumi-e.
She also wasn't exactly the best at healing. She was a unicorn, so of course she had some natural ability - but she never had anyone to train her. She instead focused her healing on the more mundane acts; herbs and poultices and the like. That was always something she was working on.
And of course, her bedside manner. She was a ray of sunshine. She had a heart bigger than any of her ability and she wanted nothing more but to be a hope for anyone who sought her help.
"Please," she said, looking directly at Sequoyah. "Let me come with you."

"I'll help," Mirari said, standing up next to her friend, Candy Striper. "I have wings, maybe I can scout ahead or something?" she suggested, looking around. Her father didn't look very pleased about her announcement to help; she was so young, only a few seasons older than Wicahpi, and she knew they thought she was being foolish. But she couldn't just stand around and watch.
At the very least, they needed to make sure that their valley was safe from the Cataclysmic fires. Maybe they could somehow put out the blaze? Drop water from the river over the flames? They could use baskets, maybe, the ones that could fly? Maybe some kind of barrier - some kind of way to divert the flames from coming down the mountain. She had to protect her family at the very least. Her eyes darted back and forth as the thoughts ran through her head.

"I want to help, too," Siebel said, stepping up with the rest. "Please, Xandir, I have wings, too!" Since neither of Siebel's parents had wings, flying had been something very slow-going for her - but her "Uncle Xandir" had been her favorite and most dedicated teacher. She still wasn't the best perhaps, but she could get along just time. And with Wicahpi and Mirari offering to help as well, she was sure she could at least do something.
Siebel was brave, too, and sounded perhaps the most sure out of any of them. Like Mirari, she was rapidly trying to think of ways they could help, or at least divert the fire.
"We should dip cloth in the water," she said, looking over to the lowered river. "There should be enough to get them wet - if we tie them over our noses that will help us get closer."

Sequoyah's eye's narrowed as he assessed the situation. This is what being a Herd leader was about - he would have to make some calls. He looked over his herd - most of them his direct family - and his heart ached for every single one of them.
Did he turn and run - after all, he knew his mother and the Thunderbirds were quite formidable.
But how he could he live with himself?
"Okay," he said, trying to sound commanding. "Sumi-e and Candy Striper, you guys are coming with me. We're going to see how we can help. Candy - get your healing herbs ready in case anyone is hurt and stay close to me."
He looked over the rest of the group.
"Siebel, Mirari, and Wicahpi, you guys scout ahead. Do what Siebel suggested and cover your muzzles with wet rags. Keep an eye on us as we make our way up the mountain and warn us if there's any danger up ahead."
He turned to his lovemates. "Xandir, Amitorlin - you make sure the others are safe here. Barricade the valley any way you can and get stores of food going, just in case."

His Alpha spoke, and he would obey. Sumi-e wasn't a stallion to argue, or even question; he would do as he was told. Especially for his Alpha, Sequoyah. That stallion was one of the few that ever showed kindness to him when he was a colt, and his loyalty ran deep.
He stepped up and gave a solemn nod. His gaze went to his daughter, and he felt a floor of relief over him as he realized she would be left behind to seek shelter.
He reached out with his muzzle and nuzzled her affectionately.

Vasile nodded at his leader's orders. He couldn't deny that he was a bit relieved - he wasn't exactly and adventurer or warrior. He didn't know how much help he would have been. Hell, he would have probably been in the way. It wasn't like he wasn't worried for the Soquili that may be hurt, but he felt more comfortable staying behind, especially with most of his family. But his eyes flickered over to his daughter, Siebel, with a mix of anxiety and pride.

Louvre pawed at the ground, conflicted. A part of him was a bit indigent that he wasn't called to come alone with Sequoyah, Sumi-e, and Candy Striper. But at the same time, he didn't really want to throw himself into the line of fire - literally. But it was exciting. He could probably help in some way surely - he was a unicorn but he hadn't ever really pursued his medical abilities. "I want to come," he spoke up after a moment, looking to Sequoyah. "I can help with Candy."

Versailles was happy to stay behind. He wasn't ever one to get tangled up in other people's business. That wasn't to say he would ever wish ill on anyone, but this was his home, finally, and he wasn't anxious to leave it. He nodded respectfully to his leader, and immediately went to Dahlia's side. He would have helped if he was called to - he had offered afterall - but the relief flooded over him as he looked over his beautiful mate. He was surprised by Louvre's eagerness to throw himself into the turmoil. "Are you sure, Louvre?"
