With a roll of gauze in one hand, and a roll of tape in the other, Oliver looked like he was ready to patch up anything the island would throw at him. It was almost comical how seriously he brandished the infirmary supplies.

"Oh... Um." He set his stuff on the little counter inside the room, next to the usual, normal supplies like a box of gloves, and tongue depressors. Oliver evaluated the skin around the tattoo until it was re-covered, but there was no redness beyond what one would expect from recently being poked with a billion needles. "I-it looks like it's healing fine, but did you want me to put on a new bandage?"

Oliver had been so fixated on the 'wound' that looking at Chance's older tattoo came second. "I-is that- wow, it looks like paint."

Chance just smiled benignly at Oliver, swinging his legs a little as he waited patiently for what he'd said to catch up to the other trainee. After a minute it seemed it did, and the bandages were set back down, Chance smoothing out his own shirt.

"Sure," he said easily, "That'll probably help a little with the stinging."

He let out a little hum and then added, "Thanks. That one was less painful than the one now, but it still kind of ached a little. I'm pretty pleased with how the colors came out."

Chance's eyes flickered towards Oliver again. "Got any tattoos?" he asked lightly, though he was pretty sure he knew the answer to that without ever even needing to say the question.

"It's really amazing, I didn't know tattoos could look like that..." The kid stared for a minute. Then he snapped back to action, grabbing gloves and the wide gauze. "Is that normal? For one to hurt more than another?" Oliver asked, giving the healing tattoo a suspicious glance before placing the gauze over it.

The trainee was remarkably deft with the medical tape, finding the cut edge and peeling it up with one hand.

At Chance's question, he paused briefly. "Ah, n-no, I could never, um... do something like that," came his reply, along with a self-depreciating smile. "It looks... too scary for me."

"Tattoos can look like anything you want," he said mildly. "I tend to like the simpler ones, hence the constellations. But there are some that are pretty intensive. And yeah, it's normal," Chance added, his lips quirking upwards in a smile. "Location is everything. The skin over the ribs is more sensitive, so it's more painful, but shoulders and backs are stronger and more muscle, so it's easier."

He rolled his neck a little, unsurprised by Oliver's reply. "If you did ever get one, what would you get?"

The gauze was taped in place.

"You are going to get more?" Oliver asked, his tone of voice surprised. But also a little curious. One tattoo was about the limit for what he had ever considered.

"I-I don't know, um..." Pale eyes glanced away. Oliver stuffed both hands into his pockets. The expression made him look even more like a hesitant kid, and not exactly someone to confidently entrust one's health to. But the next second the stethoscope had returned to break the illusion.

Oliver seemed thankful for the distraction. "Um, I'm gonna listen to your lungs for a second, take a deep breath in, and then let it out slowly, okay?"

Chance shrugged. "Why not?" he said, glancing skyward in a contemplative sort of way. "I like tattoos; they're a form of art and expression. Not all of them have a meaning, granted, but I don't think that they do. Sometimes I just get them because I like them, like the one here," he added, gesturing to the watercolor one on his shoulder.

Chance swung his legs back and forth again, watching Oliver carefully. He was so young and small; idly, he wondered how a kid like him had managed to survive for so long the way he was.

"Yes, yes, doctor," he said mildly, and took a deep breath. "You didn't answer my question."

"If it hurt, wouldn't you want to avoid it?" Oliver asked, writing down something on the clipboard. "I don't know, I mean, you could do something else for self-expression too. Like dying your hair green or something, it wouldn't be as painful..."

He was starting to sound distracted, concentrating more on the task as he leaned around to place the chestpiece of the stethoscope against Chance's back. "I-I'm not sure I have an answer... Another deep breath, please?"

"I'm not a fan of pain," Chance said with a slight smile. "But I'm a fan of things that interest me, and tattoos are one of those. I like the way they look, and I like the way they look on me.

"I also might dye my hair blue, if I can," he added, with a little bit of cheek. "Something dark, a little subtle. But self-expression comes in many forms, and I just happen to like tattoos. I've never been a fan of needles or blood, though." Chance made a face, shaking his head. "I can tolerate well enough with some things, but not others."

He took another deep breath, as per Oliver's instructions, and idly twisted his fingers together. "What about a doctor's insignia?"
