Sasha was at the portal within a few seconds of Evan. She pulled behind her leather luggage on wheels, and the tall Sun was given a quick smile as she relayed the coordinates to the tech at the portal. It did not take but half a breath and they were in Los Angeles.

"We're going shopping first," Sasha informed Evan, "before we confirm our reservations. Because you are wearing boots, and you are wearing a t-shirt, and you are wearing.. what are those even called?"

She gestured blindly at the pants he wore. Sasha was still clad in the dress and heels she'd worn in to see the doctor. She paused very briefly and took a few moments to braid and pin her hair up.

"We're staying at the Ritz-Carlton, and the dossier suggests that you are going to stick out like a sore thumb, mon Soleil. I will admit to you now that I much prefer you looking the way you are now, but I also believe you will look absolutely divine dressed in a fine, tailored suit. My treat, Evan, so long as you promise me that we will have more dessert in the very near future."

Braid finished, Sasha grasped her luggage again and moved out of the alleyway they'd stepped into.

"Cargo pants," Evan answered, "and they're useful and practical." It wasn't an argument, not really. If this had been a simple smash-and-grab, his choice of attire probably wouldn't have mattered, but standing out when they were trying to blend in could blow their cover right out of the gate. Besides, this was Sasha's op--if she said they were going shopping, they were going shopping.

He would just have to find some other way to store his munitions. Big pockets, maybe. Whatever. He could be creative. He was more disappointed at seeing Sasha's endless fall of hair bound and restrained. "You don't have to do that," he protested, following after her. "You can have dessert any time you like. All you ever have to do is ask." Even that wasn't a requirement; she had been on his thoughts often enough lately that he'd been tempted, more than once, to seek her out and offer.

Without prompting, he stepped in close to take the handle of Sasha's luggage from her. She looked damn good in those heels and that dress--certainly not like the type of woman who carried her own luggage--and maybe Evan liked looking at her without the burden of a suitcase between them. "So, where to?"

"Pantalon cargo, l' apogée de la mode," Sasha actually chuckled and allowed him to take her luggage from her. "And you still owe me dinners, Evan." She grinned up at him, an apparent pep in her step and excitement fairly radiating from her. "You should surprise me with dessert sometime. Do you remember the time in the labs? Spontaneity is something I am coming to appreciate as I grow older, Evan. Besides, allow me to buy you a suit. A gift, from one friend to the other."

Sasha took a moment on her phone to coordinate a route for them to take, one that would begin with a nearby designer store where they could purchase a suit for Evan only to end at the hotel.

"Do you ever sometimes pretend that you are normal and that perhaps this is just a normal day for you and I, walking along the boulevard on vacation and shopping like normal people can?" The question hung in the air between them as they walked to the shop, which was a short enough distance away.

Evan shrugged, smiling contently down at Sasha. He hadn't understood a word she said, but he was glad to see her so happy. "Yes, plenty of dinners. Something to keep our energy up for dessert," he agreed. His eyes glazed over a bit as she brought up their quality time in the Life labs the day they had agreed to try friendship on for size. So far, it had been a good fit. "I'll keep that in mind," he said, already thinking up places he could surprise her. The beach immediately came to mind and was just as soon discarded as too cliche, but the kitchen, maybe, late at night. One of the libraries. H's desk.

"I'll allow it," Evan said, "on the condition that you let me take you somewhere that warrants wearing it. Somewhere nice, at least one night." They would have the better part of the week to order room service--and, perhaps, the entire dessert menu--but dinner was nice, too.

Evan considered Sasha's question with a contemplative hum. "Sometimes. Sometimes it's hard to remember what normal's like," he admitted. This type of mission was certainly not the normal he had become accustomed to; no sand, no immediate danger, no overwhelming wave of blood lust--too easy, he thought, and then tried to unthink it. This was nice, regardless of how abnormal it was. "Is this what you do with your time off the island?"

"It is a deal," Sasha grinned over at him, feeling rather delighted by him. "I think once we purchase a suit for you, we will check in to the hotel and then begin our recon."

She was not going to let the doctor down. Not this time. Sasha would do whatever it took to please him, no matter what. Her jaw tensed just briefly before she shook herself free from the dark thoughts.

"No, no. I buy frogs."

It sounded ridiculous even to her own ears, and she gave a rough laugh.

"For my collection."

She did not mention how hideous they were.

"Sounds good," Evan agreed, eager, now, to get this shopping over with so they could move on to the good stuff. He hadn't had much time to review the file before Sasha had gotten them out of H's office, but he was looking forward to seeing how she would have them proceed.

Mostly he hoped he had an opportunity to use some of the shiny, explosive toys he had brought along, but he always held out hope for that.

Dimly, he remembered the fluffy pink and green robe Sasha had wrapped herself in that time she had dragged him away from Tuck's pod. He had thought it was a strange thing to see her in, but he hadn't given it much consideration at the time or anytime since then. He hadn't known it was a thing. "Chocolate and frogs," he said, humming contemplatively. "I'll have to keep that in mind. Chocolate I get, but why frogs?" She hardly seemed like the frog type.

Sasha cleared her throat.

"Because I couldn't think of anything else that I could collect. I have never really had a collection before, and frogs seemed like something that a normal person might collect. I don't really have a strong.. well, there is nothing special about frogs, I suppose. They aren't graceful and they aren't useful, really. But you can find many kinds of frog figurines and to be quite honest with you, Evan," Sasha finished as they drew up to the shop that Sasha had chosen, "they're all rather hideous."

The inside of the store was as plush as anyone might expect - leather couches, dark wood tables, and well-dressed mannequins were placed throughout the store. They were approached by a small, rotund man, and Sasha gave him specific instructions as to what she wanted -- something well-fitting in black, not too formal but not too casual.

And then she took a seat as the man led Evan back to be measured.

That was actually kind of sad, and not at all something Evan had expected to hear from Sasha. She didn't seem like the kind of woman who would do something just to do something. He thought he could understand, though, a little; with the far from normal lives they led, any shred of normalcy helped.

Frogs, though? And it didn't sound like Sasha liked them much, either. He didn't know whether helping her collection along--because frog figurines were everywhere--would be helping her or hurting her.

He didn't have time to question it, though. He heaved a resigned sigh as he placed their luggage next to the chair Sasha settled in, shooting her a not-quite-pout as he was led away. A few minutes later, the tailor came back out, fussing with the racks as he looked for things in Evan's size. Evan chose to use that time wisely.

Text to Sasha:

I don't know how this is supposed to work but I'm pretty sure that guy's hand got way too close to my crotchal region.

Text to Sasha:

Yes that is a weapon in my pocket, I'm not really that happy to see you.

Eventually, the tailor wandered back towards the fitting area. Another handful of minutes passed before he came back out, content that he had given Evan enough pairs of pants to try on.

Text to Sasha:

All of these look exactly the same.

Quote:
Text to Sasha:

I asked him if I could put grenades in the front pockets and he said it would ruin the line of the pants. What does that even mean? I don't think he was taking me seriously.

Quote:
Text to Sasha:

I think the zipper's stuck on these, I might need help with it. But your help, not his help. He's got way too many pins and I don't want to take any chances with sharp things near delicate areas.

She did not bother texting him when he mentioned the zipper being stuck - instead, Sasha rose to her feet and asked the tailor to keep an eye on their things. She did not anticipate being gone long, quite honestly, just enough to get Evan on his way so that they could take a short taxi ride to the hotel they were staying in.

The tailor did not fuss at her but nodded his head as Sasha slipped past him.

"Evan, you cannot be serious," she whispered as she peered into the dressing room in search of which spacious stall he was in. Thankfully they were the only ones there so he was not difficult to find. Sasha knocked lightly on the door. "Delicate areas," she snorted indelicately. "Open the door."

Evan was actually 100% serious. The zipper of the pants he was in the process of trying on was stuck halfway up and Evan didn't want to risk tearing the delicate fabric. He hadn't expected Sasha to actually come help him, but he greeted her with a wide smile as he opened the door for her. After quickly peering out to make sure the tailor was nowhere in sight, he reeled Sasha into the fitting room with an arm around her waist and closed the door behind her.

"Hi," he whispered before leaning in to give her a long, thorough kiss.

The kiss was delicious, and that smile of his...

Sasha broke the kiss long enough to lean back with a shocked look on her face. The corners of her lips twitched.

"Evan Roberts," she began with a whisper, sounding thoroughly scandalized, "are you attempting to make out with me in the dressing room of a prestigious custom suit shop?"

"Yes," Evan admitted, completely unashamed. "I'm being spontaneous. And if you have to ask, I must not be doing it right." He tugged her close and proceeded to try harder.

Almost thirty minutes later, Sasha stepped out of the dressing room as she smoothed her rumpled dress over her hips. Her hair was loose again, and she left it that way because it seemed to please Evan. It had been an arduous task, but they'd finally managed to fix his zipper.

The tailor said nothing as Sasha waved her hand in his direction with a curt, "He's made a decision. We'll take two of whatever he's chosen."

A small, private smile toyed with her lips as she waited for Evan.

Evan was suspiciously amenable for the rest of the trip, even agreeing to a couple of ties. Subtle, neutral colors, because the entire point was to blend in. There was room in the pockets of the jacket for his phone and wallet, but nothing big enough for the runic grenades he had brought or the bayonet that lived in the side of his boot, and all of the clothes he had walked in wearing clattered as he packed them into the bag he had brought.

He felt, despite the well-made clothes he was wearing, utterly naked. He moved stiffly and hesitantly, too aware of the fine fabric he wasn't at all accustomed to wearing. This was, by far, the nicest thing he had ever worn, and he really, really hoped he didn't embarrass Sasha. He could do this for her. It was all just a part of the mission, he told himself. At least it wasn't the desert.

(He wished, very briefly, that it was the desert, but that wasn't a place he wanted Sasha to ever have to visit again.)

It was a relief once they got outside, and Evan took a deep breath--but not too deep; the shirt and jacket were well-fitted, and he he could feel it tighten around his chest. "Thank you," he said on the exhale, grinning softly down at Sasha. "A lot. Seriously. This is...do you think you can expense it? It's for the mission, after all." Though he had to admit that they matched a little better now, less like a woman and her muscle and more like a woman and her...friend.

"You look stunning," Sasha tugged him down so that she could kiss the corner of his lips as they walked. "And I will not expense it, because it was a gift for a dear friend. That is the last I will hear of it," she added, narrowing her pale eyes just briefly before smiling.

It would not take them long to reach the hotel, and thanks to the efficiency of the staff only minutes would pass until they were secured in their room - Mister and Missus Blythe, please do enjoy your honeymoon - and Sasha kept a tight lid on her mirth until the door was closed behind them.

And then she burst into laughter. It was not a full-throated, sultry laugh, but the wild giggles of a girl. Sasha felt foolish, but at the same time she felt utterly safe around Evan, and perhaps it was beginning to show.

"Mister Blythe, darling," Sasha's words trembled as she fought laughter, "do be gentle, you know it's my first time."
