Chris rolled to his feet and took after Jack, but he must have been wearing a particularly enticing cologne that day because the shadows were on him like a fat kid on cake.
He didn't even wait a moment to reorient himself before he jumped back to his feet at the beginning of the course.Status

Chris paid attention to what he was doing as the shadows came for him this time, managing not to get swallowed up again. He'd probably have to pace himself a little.

Okay, maybe he was being too cautious. But was it more embarrassing to lose, or to be knocked out of the course a third time?

He slowed down again to look back for Jack, but couldn't find him amid the chaos.
He returned to slashing and bashing, but with a smug smile.

Chris hung his head with the ******** greatest of shame. He wanted to make himself feel better, saying he was only moon, but Jack was a lifer. He was pathetic. He was awful.

He just continued to grin. Chel would be told. Gloating rights, remember? "Good thing they only need you to cover people," he said with shoulder pat of feigned sympathy. "Worry about not letting people die and leave everything else to the professionals." Because Jack was of course better through some indescribable quality. He rolled his shoulders until they popped. "I think I'm going to see how far I can go on this course. It's kind of fun, killing things."

He straightened at the prospect of continuing the course, though. "Yeah, I'll keep going too. See if I can at least get a more respectable count..."
