She was blushing, and it was easy to notice, and also easy to see that it was very cute, and very Lydia-ish. Arorangi felt his own face color, just a little, and he shifted his hands on the spear, trying to get a better hold on the weapon. She had stumbled slightly, and automatically he reached towards her, forgetting they were supposed to be sparring, and instead grasping her arm to keep her from falling on her face.

"Are you all right, aroha?" he asked, brows drawing together in concern as his hand dropped away, and he stepped back again. "You are doing very well this fight, I am very impressed! You seem to be working well with your weapon!"

Flicking a few dreadlocks off of his shoulder, Arorangi smiled, readying the spear again.

"Okay, well...coconuts are my favorite foods," he said brightly. "Anything coconut flavored I like very much. And I especially like all seafood, mostly lobster, but crab and shrimp and fish are delicious too! Salmon is probably my favorite fish to eat, or haddock and chips!"

The spear grazed her side as he lunged; Arorangi's face was still faintly pink.

Lydia wasn't used to seeing Arorangi blush. She wasn't sure she'd ever seen him blush, actually! She gazed openly at it now, the faint hint of color tinting his cheeks almost mesmerizing in a way, distracting her from his question regarding her well being. Of course, that only made her own blush continue as she realized that he was asking her something, and she cleared her throat before speaking, her voice coming out a little bit more shrill than usual. "Yes, of course I...Just lost my balance a little." She let out a small laugh from behind her whip wielding hand, before biting down on her bottom lip. "But thank you!" Because she appreciated his warm words of encouragement quite a lot.

He was telling her about what kind of foods he liked, and she listened while again trying to concentrate on what he was doing with his weapon. She nodded her head and smiled, and when he lunged, she leaned over, and the spear grazed the side of her stomach.

Lydia flicked the whip a little haphazardly while he was still near, one of it's tails just barely lashing out at Aro, who it appeared was still blushing, if only still faintly!

She wondered if maybe she had done something wrong, and she knew that niggling feeling would likely stay with her no matter how much she tried to ignore it, so before he could counterattack she blurted out just what she was thinking. "You...you're blushing, Arorangi. I didn't upset you somehow, did I?"

Her own face was still bright red.

Maybe it was because, even though he had told her multiple times that he thought of her as pretty and cute, that it was only just now that he had actually really and truly seen it. He knew it, instinctively, just like a fact of life, but right now Lydia Stiles was very cute, and it showed.

His spear barely made a dent; she was moving quickly, but her next attack only brushed him, one of the tails sliding over his forearm. Arorangi readjusted his steps and then moved in a wide circle around her, spinning the spear and almost dropping it when he heard her speak again.

"Oh!" he said, looking horrified. "No! No, not at all, aroha, you have not upset me in the slightest, please do not think so! I was just..." Thinking you were cute? "I was just thinking about something," Arorangi finished, flashing a smile in Lydia's direction, though the blush still hadn't abated entirely. "About, er...well, a few things, actually."

The spear grazed her arm again. Arorangi's expression softened a little.

"Do not worry, aroha," he reassured her gently. "You have done nothing to make me upset at you; I think that is actually impossible."

While Lydia was curious to know what a great many things could be, she stopped herself from asking, again reminding herself that people generally had private thoughts that they didn't always wish to share. So, instead, she simply grinned, and she could actually feel the heat from her own cheeks begin to fade finally, though they were just quite a shade of pink now instead of red. "Oh! I see! I am sorry for um...assuming." She again attempted to dodge the spear, which this time grazed against her arm, and took the opportunity to crack her whip at him again.

It seemed that her once good aim was now completely all over the place.

"Oh goodness you shouldn't say that." She smiled. "Now if I do ever upset you, I'll feel like I didn't quite live up to your expectations!" She laughed, though now of course, now she was actually actively thinking of ways that she could upset him, even though it was all theoretical ideas in her head, ideas that would likely never be put into practice. Salt in his coffee? Yank on one of his dread locks?

.......Fake her own death?

No, she couldn't do any of those things to him. Not just to test a theory. If she ever upset him, it would have to be in a genuine moment.

For some reason, she really really hoped that moment never came. She didn't want to let him down!

"Soooooooooo, seafood?" She was back to all smiles, "I really like seafood too! Well, as long as it's spicy. Spicy anything really!"

She was still blushing; he tried not to notice.

"Do not worry, aroha," Arorangi said reassuringly, as he waved a hand in her direction. "It is not you that is assuming, please do not think that I think any less of you. You have been a very good friend to me, you have not yet shown me that you are capable of upsetting me, and that is a good thing."

(He wasn't going to mention now that he still thought she was cute when she blushed, because he had the feeling it would make her blush even more, and then it would just be a big cycle that would never end. Arorangi decided he would tell her later, when they were not poking and prodding at each other with their weapons.)

He smiled at her, his face brightening. "Yes, seafood, though I am not a huge fan of too much spice! I do not mind it, though, I will try almost anything as it is. There are many strange foods in New Zealand, after all, and many of them are from the ocean. Sea anemone is a particularly strange food!"

Shifting his feet again, he lunged forward, swiping the spear towards her legs.

Lydia was practically beaming at him now, his compliments, as always, giving her a complete boost in spirit and confidence. "I will try my best, then." She laughed, though she was also happy to go back to the previous subject about favored foods. She loved to learn new things about people, and Arorangi was special in that she actually enjoyed hearing it from him instead of her following him around and taking notes on his activities to gain a clearer picture.

"I have never tried sea anemone" She admitted. "Though I would love to!" New things, new experiences, Lydia was never one to balk, no matter how strange it might seem!

This time she was woefully unprepared for the strike from Arorangi's spear. It swiped against her legs hard enough to elicit a small gasp, the pain sharp, and she was aware that had she not had a shield, she would likely have deep gashes along the fronts of her legs. As it was there were sure to be bruises. Lydia instinctively clapped one hand down on top of her leg, and bit down on her bottom lip.

"Ohhhhh ouch! Wow, that was really great!" She rubbed at her leg while hobbling backwards, hopefully out of range, before she straightened back up.

....And realized that she was now out of range of striking him back.

He gave a laugh that echoed around the training field. "Sea anemone is a strange thing," said Arorangi, as he readjusted his footing yet again. "Most people either find it very appetizing, or they find it awful. I personally find it very awful, it does not taste appealing at all."

He jabbed at her yet again, though this time it was near her side.

His swing had had more force behind it than he'd intended; Lydia had yelped and leapt back, and Arorangi immediately backed off, looking sheepish. "I am sorry, aroha!" he said hastily, lifting his hands in front of him. "I did not mean to hit so hard, are you all right?"

Lydia laughed, though it was more of a nervous sound then a cheerful one, even if she continued to smile, taking her jab with a wince that crinkled up the edges of her eyes but with a flash of teeth that refused to diminish in the slightest.

"I'm fine!" She insisted. "You are just doing so great! It's so impressive to see how well you can handle your weapon." This time, instead of stumbling back, she closed the distance between them that she needed to in order to strike back, though again her aim was much further off then it needed to be.

"You know what? We should go for dinner sometime! Oh, or we could go in a group? Invite some friends?"

Not that she really had many friends.....

"If you are sure, aroha..." he said, but he didn't sound entirely convinced.

He didn't like hurting her, as much as Arorangi found sparring to be a necessity. His brows drew together, a worried expression passing across his face as he watched her, Lydia's whip smacking against the side of his arm. It didn't hurt much, but it stung slightly, the reverberations going up and down his arm in light tingles. He retaliated with a quick strike to her torso, near her hip.

There was a pause, and some of the tension eased from Arorangi's shoulders. He stuck the tip of his spear into the ground with a little thunk and surveyed Lydia with a strangely scrutinizing expression, his dark eyes resting on her pale face.

"Nah," he said, after a moment, and smiled. "Just you and me, aroha. That sounds good to me."

The strike hit her hard enough to send her spinning around nearly backwards, and she clenched her teeth lest she cry out from the sharp jab of pain that reverberated along her hip bone. A hand pressed down against the struck area, and she bit down on her bottom lip for a moment before turning, a full smile stretching across her face once more as she hid just how much that hit had actually hurt.

But she noticed that Arorangi had stuck his spear into the ground, and while her own weapon wielding arm had not been raised to strike again, she still blinked in surprise, before looking up into Aro's eyes, which seemed to suddenly be boring into her. It actually made her feel suddenly quite nervous, and her own smile slipped away for just a moment.

But then he was smiling again, and feeling of relief swept through her. He still hadn't drawn his weapon, so she kept hers down at her side. So relieved was she, that at first what he said next didn't quite register with her.

And then she remembered that she had just invited him to dinner....and she guessed now that this was his acceptance to that invitation. She was suddenly beaming, quite happy, though there was a small, niggling part of her that spoke up in the back of her mind, a question about why he had paused before answering, but she paid that voice little mind.

"Really? Great! I mean, I've actually only been off of the island once since I got here..Oh, but I guess we don't really have to go anywhere. I'm sure we could have a meal right on the island...." It honestly didn't matter to her, she was just happy to have made plans with somebody who's company she greatly enjoyed.

He desummoned the spear a moment later, the weapon disappearing in a gust of pale light. Lydia may have been good at hiding how much he'd hit her, but it didn't stop Arorangi from worrying anyway, and the expression on his face was concerned as he took a step toward her.

"I have only been off the island for that one mission," he said, sweeping his dreadlocks off of one shoulder and letting them fall against his broad back. "And that was not really very pleasant, I must say. So I think that we should have a good dinner off the island."

His smile widened, and Arorangi reached for Lydia's arm, wrapping his fingers around her thin wrist so that he could examine it for bruises.

"Just you and me," Arorangi said, "It will be fun, aroha."

And then frowned slightly. "Did I hurt you? Do you need to go to the infirmary?"

With his spear gone, Lydia dismissed her own weapon as well, it's shape transforming in a flash of bright orange-red much like the flickering flames of a fire, before it relocated itself back to her wrist in totem form.

A pale face full of bright eyes and a cheerful smile was all Arorangi would get from her, with not a single complaint about the parts of her body that were sure to bruise from his wickedly effective spear attacks. It would have been silly to complain, after all, given that it was a spar and a little pain was to be expected!

"Mmm, same! Well, two missions now, in my case, though the first was more of an accident." She made a hand waving motion as if to brush it off.

But just as her arm was beginning to lower again, warm fingers were closing gently around her wrist. For whatever reason, an almost electric sensation jolted through her, her stomach flip flopping, and she gasped in a breath without meaning to.

Just you and me.

For some reason, she could feel her face warming up again. It was inexplicable, there was surely no reason! And yet, there she was, blushing for what felt like the millionth time.

"N-no. No no no, I am fine, Arorangi." She suddenly felt a longing need to slide her wrist away from him, if only to slip her hand into his, her eyes now fixated on where he held her, as if unable to look away.

"Rorric has no substantial healing skills, but he does what he can. I believe that the few bruises I will have sustained are no cause for alarm, and a trip to the infirmary is entirely unnecessary." She was feeling a little flustered, but in order to calm herself down, she focused entirely too hard on not sounding like a complete fool, and lapsed into the type of speech patterns she normally associated more with her work and research than when socializing for pleasure.

"You and me should go on one of those missions," said Arorangi, letting out a little hum as he looked down at her arm, inspecting it carefully. "You know, the ones that are listed in our files that can be done on our own time. We can take Oliver with us, so that all three of us get more experience."

Her gasp gave him pause; he looked up, brows drawing together in concern, and immediately Arorangi loosened his grasp. "Sorry, aroha," he said quickly. "Did I hurt you? I did not mean to, I just wanted to check to see if you had any bruises."

Lydia's cheeks were pink, and he wasn't sure if it stemmed from pain, the exertion of their spar, or something else. Arorangi's own face warmed slightly, and for a moment he just stood there, holding her wrist, a silence sliding between the two of them.

When she spoke again, it was very professional, calm, and collected, and somehow this made him relax a little, a gentle smile spreading across Arorangi's face. He let go of Lydia's wrist, and lifted his hand to her face, gently chucking her under the chin affectionately.

"All right, aroha, I will take your word for it," he said with a wink as he dropped his hand, and then he turned around, so that his broad back was to her instead. "Climb on, then, and I will at least carry you back to your room, since you have done so well in our spar."

A mission with both Arorangi and Oliver? "That would be lovely!" She smiled, realizing that now that the idea had been presented, that she actually did miss getting out into the world, travelling, adventuring, learning....

Slowly her flush began to fade away, and she gave her head a small shake. "No, it's nothing you've done, or need to worry about." She said, in response to his fear that he had hurt her by taking her wrist. "Besides, I don't believe that you would ever hurt me intentionally, Arorangi." A small smile now, and when he lowered his hand, she slid her arm away, freeing it of his gentle grasp.

And then all seriousness was set aside at the offer of a piggyback ride. Her eyes widened, and she grinned in absolute delight, clapping her hands together under her chin. "Oh. Oh yes, please!" She took a few steps back, readying herself with a small wiggle before running forward and launching herself at his back, legs going up to wrap around his waist even as arms clutched tight around his shoulders for a moment, adjusting herself on him comfortably, slipping a bit with a slight shriek of amusement, and resituating herself once more before her grip finally loosened, one arm lifting to point in the direction of the dorms.

"Onward!" She called out, before sucomming to a fit of giggles and soft snorts, ducking down so that her arms could wrap around Aro's chest in a hug, her smiling face pressed up against the side of his. "And thank you."

He smiled, reassured by Lydia's enthusiasm. "I will figure something out, then," he told her. "And then I will text you and Oliver and we will go on a grand adventure, the three of us. I consider the two of you my closest friends, after all," he added, grinning at the girl.

She seemed to be less flushed now, which was also reassuring, because some of the concern that he had hurt her faded away. "No, aroha," Arorangi said, in a surprisingly serious tone as he leveled a look in her direction. "I would never hurt you intentionally - or unintentionally, if at all possible."

For a split second there was a strange look of fierceness in his eyes, but then it had gone, and he had turned around to offer her his back. Lydia's shriek of excitement ringing in his ears, laughter bubbled from Arorangi's throat as she flung herself against him, and his large arms immediately lifted to tuck beneath her thin legs, careful to hold her in place. She was very light, very easy to carry, as though she hardly weighed a thing at all, and her face was warm where it pressed against his cheek.

"Of course, aroha, you are worth it," Arorangi said, with another wink, and he squeezed Lydia's ankle before starting off toward the dormitory building, laughing and smiling the entire way.
