Jordan nodded. "I prefer to be honest with my friends," he said, and wondered quietly if Melvin would pick up on all the potential implications and complexities inherent in the statement. Melvin seemed to realize how much of his thoughts Jordan usually held back, at least. "Your curiosity overrides your consideration sometimes. Maybe your friends in college were like that too," he suggested. "What did you major in? I don't think you've told me." He sipped his tea. "I'm not surprised. She's pretty protective about her sister." Family could be a sensitive topic anywhere, and particularly here. Jordan's mouth tightened a little as he thought of what Harrison had said about his family. He kept the thought to himself, though, not ready to talk about that to anyone, not really ready even to analyze it. He was tired, physically and emotionally, and that particular subject was a complex knot of conflicting feelings. "She's got some opinions on morals and ideals that don't fit well with how Rep sees the world, and she doesn't always think a lot about what she says before she says it. But she wants to do the right thing." He half-smiled at the not-a-question about tea. "Got a kettle and some boxes of tea for my birthday," he explained, and left out that the gift had been from Harrison, because every conversation was a minefield still and Melvin was trying very hard not to ask overly personal questions. "There's a certain amount of technique to brewing different kinds of tea. Water temperature and steeping time play a part in how it tastes. I've been learning how it works. I'm sure a chemist could tell me more about how the heat interacts with the compounds in the leaves, but that's not my field."

"Hmm, I guess my friends were." Just not enough to ask him questions, which had been vital to a few of his friendships.
"I was studying biochemistry to later work in parasitology. I was only ending my first year...when I left." He looked at his tea and the little flecks of leaves at the bottom. "I still wonder what my roommate thought at the note I left...or anyone else." Had it come off suicidal and did thy always believe this was how it would end for him?
"I still miss school. It's nice to work on the field sometimes or do lab work, but I wosh I was more on a team sometimes."

"I left toward the end of my second year in college," Jordan offered. "Didn't have a roommate. I don't know how long it took them to notice ... " He trailed off, sighing. "Not more than a week, probably. I was going to school in my hometown, so I saw my family pretty often." They'd almost certainly thought it was suicide, so soon after the accident. In a way, sometimes he thought it had been an attempt. "You don't really think school's a forgiving environment, and then you leave," he said, and puffed a breath of air that wasn't quite a snort.

He had to smile at that. "Yeah, I remember that before I left my dorm, I was still thinking about how terrible it was that I was leaving my lab group to work their assignment without me. I also thought of my textbooks and wondering if they would go to someone and if I should have left a not to give them to my lab partners. Just stupid things like that. That and grades. All that for nothing." He sighed and leaned back, looking up.
"But I guess stressing over midterms still beats waking up at 5 am to be thrown into a mission you know nothing about. It puts the rest in perspective. That the books and classes weren't as bad as you thought compared to dodging fireballs and demons. That when you complained that they didn't have a movie for you to rent that at least you could watch movies regularly. That you could go anywhere really….talk to anyone. There was just so much freedom that you didn't realize before."
And so much potential to your life.
Somber, he continued looking up. "Do you….still think about them? About your family?"

"Knowing you see things that other people don't see doesn't prepare you for what they really are," Jordan agreed. "Not sure there's anything that can. Not the way things work now." Maybe an extended training program, started early; but that wasn't this world, this place. "I do," he answered. "I've toyed with the idea of sending back money to help the family out, but I haven't been able to figure out a way to do that that's not traceable or suspicious. I won't put them at risk just to ease a little of my own guilt." He shrugged, looking troubled, and debated a moment before adding, "Candace said my aunt looked like she was doing all right when she was in the area." He sighed. "What about you?"

"I thought the same thing to, in being a mysterious benefactor. Even if it's just to make myself feel better for what I did. I worry about something happening to them and I'm not there to help. At least work here might feel better when it's paying to help them out."
But that wasn't the case. Interaction in any way was a no go. He asked, and ten he asked other questions of what other things he might be able to do. All of them were answered wih a no, then soon with exasperated sighs, and then frustrated shooing out their office door.
"Thought about making up a fake name and pretending to be some forgotten friend of my sister's just so I could hear how they were doing. To just talk with her again. Could even continue pretending and send her presents during Christmas. Ya know, just to feel there again."
He sighed and finally looked down at his tea. "But then I think, 'I'm dead to them. Why hurt them twice?' Why want somethin I made the decision to leave?"

"I think it's human nature to want what you can't have." Jordan sighed and finished off his tea. "Even if it was you yourself that decided you couldn't have it." He got up, rubbing his free hand across his eyes. "I think I'm going to go to bed," he told Melvin. "I'm just worn down. You want any help with the sheets, or would you rather get that yourself?" He nodded toward the pile of bedding at the end of the couch.

He looked over to the sheets and back. "Oh no. I'm fine. You can go to bed. This is your place after all. Thanks again for letting me stay ..I mean, even if I have my own place and everything. Not that I'm like, against it." He wasn't sure what he wanted to say. He just hoped he wasn't coming off as creepy or weird for taking Jordan's offer if it might have just been a courtesy. Then again, Jordan let him in, had the place prepared and even offered tea.
Why did he feel so guilty for being a guest?
The worn look of the other answered him. Jordan had had just as rough a day as anyone else, and it seemed like he hadn't helped the Sun look any more relaxed.
I probably made it worse.
The best thing he could do now was be a good guest, be quiet, and let the man go to sleep. Lord knew they all needed it.
"Good night, Jordan." He said as he held his tea, the warm now lukewarm in his hands.

"No problem," Jordan answered. He paused a moment, avoided looking at Melvin, decided what he was going to say. "It's sort of selfish, I guess. Didn't want to deal with an empty apartment in the morning, thought you might not either." He shot a brief sideways glance at Melvin, something unreadable. "Good night," he said, and disappeared into the bedroom, closing the door quietly behind him.
