This guy was learning quick, and that was good, because they really never did know when s**t was going to hit the fan around here. They were never safe. There was never a moment when Finn felt that he could actually rest easy.

Wait. Jack? This time Finn did more than just scoff a laugh. He full out chuckled in great amusement. "Oh my ********, are you serious? Freakishly tall b*****d? Reading glasses? Stick up his ******** a**?" Finn asked, though he was pretty sure he knew the answer already.

"Naw, he's just a professional douche bag." Finn chuckled some more, giving his head a small shake. What were the chances? The chances that a Chance would just chance to happen upon being woken up by he who just happened to be Finn's best friend (supposedly)??

Okay now he just felt like a dork for even thinking that....

Moving on, he quickly got straightened back up, only to be hit by another arrow that sent him staggering back, his balance not quite set. In response, he turned his spear so that it was facing the other man, and used it like an over sized pool cue, jabbing it towards Chance's mid-section.

"Thanks. I try."

Not that he should really be all that proud of beating up a newly awakened trainee or anything.

Chance had already determined that his survival banked on him being able to take care of himself, so learning how to adapt quickly was essential, regardless of how he felt about it. He needed not to die, and if that meant fumbling through learning how to defend himself, then so be it.

"That's the one," said Chance mildly, sliding his hand against the shaft of an arrow to pull it against the wire, notching it carefully and quickly into place. "He was somewhat less than enthusiastic, but that professional douchebag sort of s**t doesn't really bother me too much."

He flashed Finn a brief smile that was still on his face even after Finn's next jab caught him straight on in the stomach, sending Chance collapsing to the ground. He felt as though he'd been punched in the stomach, gasping a bit for breath as he staggered to his feet again, one hand on his stomach.

"Holy s**t. That's impressive," he said, and then, without warning, he launched himself forward, an arrow in his hand; only instead of shooting Finn with it, he had driven his shoulder into the other's chest in an attempt at knocking him down, the arrow between his fingers aiming for Finn's torso.

"Good, because I can tell you right now, this island is full of them." Professional douchebags, he meant, "And only the strong will survive, while the weak will likely sit in their rooms crying, menstruating, and eating tubs full of ice cream."

It was with a satisfied smirk that Finn sent the other man to the ground, though he was at least polite enough not to follow it up with a second attack, waiting instead for Chance to get to his feet again. Weapon still up and held at the ready, he awaited the moment when the next arrow would take flight.

Except that it didn't. Chance's willingness to adapt and think up a new strategy was commendable, and frankly, completely unexpected. He took Finn totally off his guard, not expecting to find himself so up close and personal, the shoulder in his chest sending him staggering, legs crumpling beneath him as he fell onto his back, wind knocked out of him, arrow stabbed into him, eliciting a grunt of pain.

Well, if that's how it was going to be....

It wasn't the best position to do it in, the angle awkward, but while one of Finn's hands was still clinging to Trynt tightly, his other was free to ball up into a fist, which he sent hurting towards Chance's face, followed quickly by a slightly angled (as much as he could angle it, really) upward stab with his lance.

"Good thing I don't PMS when I'm working, then," said Chance lightly, a teasing glint in his eyes. "Though I do like ice cream, not gonna lie."

He supposed it would have been the nice thing to do if he had kept going with the shooting arrows; but like Finn had already said, only the strong would survive, and if that meant taking the low road, then Chance was already prepared to go right ahead and do that.

Which was why he didn't have any hesitations about slamming into Finn full force instead of shooting him like he'd been doing.

His strategy had apparently worked, however, because the other gave a grunt and fell back, Chance following on pure gravity and momentum as he stumbled down half on top of him, pressing down on Finn's legs. The arrow in his hand had managed to scrape into the other, and then it had dissipated, and something heavy - Finn's fist - collided with Chance's face, sending him reeling back. The jab of the lance followed, and he didn't have time to react fast enough, Chance giving a little hiss of pain.

"Holy s**t, that hurt."

"s**t." Finn managed to sit up, his chest still hurting both from the stab, and having the wind knocked out of him. His word came out in a low his, rough, his hand shaken out from the punch and then pressed against his chest as he relearned how to breathe. "Sorry about that. As you advance, and create a better bond with your weapon, you'll become stronger, and so will your weapon. A better Fear shield, and more powerful attacks." He winced, slightly, his teeth gritting.

"That was quite the move." Finn had let his lance drop to the ground now, and it didn't appear to look like he was going to pick it back up again at that moment.

He was lying on his back a few inches from Finn, one of his legs lying across the other's foot. Chance pushed himself up onto his elbows, looking somewhat winded, a bruise beginning to form just beneath his left eye; but otherwise, he seemed quite at ease, slowly easing up into a sitting position as well.

He pressed a hand to his stomach and winced slightly, the frown flickering briefly across his face before disappearing as quickly as it had come. "Asher's already pretty good, I think," said Chance, sounding a little out of breath, his voice a little rough. "They're already pretty supportive."

{ - I'm glad to hear you find me appealing. - }

A smile tugged at his lips again as Chance pulled his legs in toward himself and sat cross-legged beside the other man, exhaling a breath and running a hand through his messy curls.

"Is that a good thing or a bad thing?" he asked, with a slight laugh. "I figured I would just...go with my instincts."

Finn felt like he could easily keep going in this situation, and Trynt growled his approval at the thought, but it also seemed like there was really no need, not unless he was planning on teaching the other man what it felt like to be beaten down to within an inch of his Fear shield breaking on his first damn day, which he was not. Gradually his lungs were able to fill with air without aching, and he slowly pulled his legs towards himself as well, smiling though the warmth of it never reached his eye in the slightest.

"But they get better." He repeated. "And trust me, there will be times when you wish you were stronger. There's some nasty s**t out there that no amount of training will prepare you for." Like being bitten by an infected hunter and practically vomiting up a gallon of blood, only to turn cannibal a few moments later.

Fun times.

Finn made no move to get up from where he sat on the ground, and Chance didn't appear to be in a hurry either. "Well, it took me completely off guard, so I guess I would call that a good thing, in your case. Bad for me." He shrugged his shoulders, and then frowned a little, though that cold smile never left his face.

"Instincts...." He paused, and when he spoke again there was not an ounce of amusement in his tone. "Tell me, then. What do your instincts say about me?"

For a split second, Chance thought that Finn might deal him one last blow; but thankfully he seemed to be finished as well, the other drawing his legs in toward him. Chance eased out a breath that was slightly winded, but he seemed mostly relaxed.

"Good to know," He replied, already mentally taking notes, filing information away for later. Mostly, he was just glad that people seemed to be giving him the truth, straight and flat and without preamble; there was no unnecessary sugar coating and no making everything sound better than it was. "Thanks for the advice."

The smile on his face widened a little, the corners up his lips quirking upwards slightly. Chance ran a hand through his hair again and gave Finn a contemplative look, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he scrutinized the other man.

"That you know what you want and you like to get what you want," said Chance, after a long moment. "The fact that you were willing to risk your life to stand up to the bosses means that you're determined, and probably stubborn. And that you're probably kind of an a*****e," he added, a slightly amused tone in his voice.

But then he shook his head, brows raising a little. "And that you like to just tell it how it is, which I appreciate. There's no s**t from you, you just give it to everyone straight."

He didn't balk under the scrutiny, instead keeping his cold gaze level with Chance's as the other man contemplated his answer (or so he assumed that's what Chance was doing during the small stretch of silence that followed Finn's question). However, once the other man began to guess, the moon intermediate's lips began to slowly rise. He was most definitely the astute type, Finn could tell immediately, especially given the fact that he managed to nail a lot of Finn's personality quirks right on the head. Mind you, Finn felt like he had given away a great deal of it, though the stubborn and a*****e were damn good guesses.

He let out a light chuckle. "You forgot something." He began to lean forward, his knee's going under him, his hands moving in front of himself, before he pushed himself up into a crouch, his arms resting on his knee's. "I'm also really, really good in bed." He would have winked, had he still been capable of the motion, but instead his smirk widened into a grin, and he finally straightened up back to his feet.

"You should give me a call sometime, or text. We can hang out, have a drink or two. My number will already be programmed into the phone that they gave you."

It was true that Finn had given away some of his personality through mere words and actions, but the guessed part had been deduced through careful observation of the other. Chance was by no means an expert, but growing up in the homes he had, and having to deal with the types of people that had been in his life had meant that he'd needed to be someone who could read people as best he could. And while it wasn't an exact science by any means, and while he most definitely got things wrong about people, he liked to think that it was something he could do better than some of his other things.

"Oh?" said Chance, with a flicker of a gaze towards Finn, raising his eyebrows. The smirk was stretched across the other's face, and the corners of Chance's lips quirked a little, dark eyes filled with a sharp sort of amusement.

"Good to know," he replied mildly. "If I ever need to test that theory, I'll let you know."

Chance didn't follow Finn's lead, but instead stayed where he was, sitting cross-legged on the training field. He leaned back on his hands and looked up at the other man, a smile on his face as he said, "Glad to see that you're the charitable type. I'll probably be needing a drink soon, if this island is the same as everyone says it is."

"You do that." Finn's voice went a notch or two lower, the smirk never leaving his face. He would, clearly, be more than happy to prove his own incredibly immodest words.

Arms crossed over his chest and his head cocked slightly to the side as the other man stayed seated on the ground, looking up at him.

"Ah yes well, don't spread it around too much. We don't get paid very well and I'd prefer my supplies only be shared with very few." Namely, the small collection of friends he had made on the island in the last year.

"Oh, and rest assured, it's probably a lot worse then what you've been told."

He thought about offering Chance a hand up, but the other guy looked like he was pretty settled in on the ground. Instead, Finn dug into his pocket, and pulled out his phone, checking the time, before letting out a long, though very insincere sounding, sigh.

"Infirmary duty." He explained, pocketing the phone with a smile. "I'll see you around." He gave the other man another brief flicker of his gaze, up and down, tongue gliding along the inside of his teeth, before he graced him with another cold smile, and turned to leave, his weapon desummoning back into totem form in the palm of his hand as he exited the training field.
