She sprawled over the couch, including the bits Finn was on, her head in his lap and her hands reaching for his hair. “Nope,” she said. “Unless it’s the Princess Bride.” It was pretty fun to imagine she was Wesley. (Obviously Finn was Buttercup.) “I want to spend time with you.” Arkady propped her heels against the arm on the other end of the couch, and closed her eyes for a long moment.
“I’m not saying we have to now,” she said. “I know we are going to take it slow, and all. But maybe one day we can get married? I’d really like that. Tallulah says if I get financially secure and you don’t feel like you’re trapping me anymore, maybe you’ll say yes.”

Finn had already watched the Princess Bride four times in the last week and was not confident that he wanted to make it five. Arkady, much in the manner of a small child, had the ability to never tire of watching the same film on repeat. Him, well, not so much. “No movie, then,” he said, leaning his head down obligingly towards her hands.
He had to consider her question, because how he answered it was definitely going to shape the trajectory of their relationship moving forward and saying yes too enthusiastically would be as disastrous as saying no too firmly. “Um,” said Finn, “Maybe one day, yeah. We can keep talking about it and see where we wind up, okay?” Maybe Arkady would decide she was only his in a platonic way and she loved someone else. The future was vast and unknowable.
“But we can definitely make it a possibility,” he assured her. “Just not in the immediate future. We’re not engaged.”

Arkady furrowed her brow and chewed at her lip for a long moment before she said, “Okay,” she said. It wasn’t an engagement, and that was alright. She brushed his hair behind his ears, ran the tips of her fingers over his jaw and to his lips, which felt slick with Chapstick. One day he’d understand that she wanted him with every part of her that knew how to want, and some that had learned just for this occasion. That day was not this day, when he was still thought of her as someone small and in need of protection.
She was making strides towards that no longer being the case. Arkady brought her hands to her side and pushed herself up on one elbow to kiss him. “Okay,” she repeated, her lips still on his before she drew back and folded her hands just over the rise of her ribs. “I love you, you know.”

Finn’s heart beat a little faster in his throat for the way her fingers swept over his lips and jaw, and he ached with a sweet sense of longing that he’d promised himself he wouldn’t act on yet. “I love you, too,” he said, closing his hands softly over hers and leaning into the kiss. “Just making sure you know that.”
He was pretty sure she did.
