Amalia froze at the mention of Friedval having tattoos and/or scars. It now made sense, in a way, if the Garrison was covering up the kidnappings, but why would they? They were incompetent at times, but would they actually be actively malicious? Maybe it was just Friedval. No, he couldn't hide it alone, probably. Derrick might be in on it. Better to play along for now.
The green haired girl saluted, almost sincerely. "Sir, we have reason to believe that Friedval may be in danger. Do you know where he is, right now?" It was even somewhat true; if it turned out the Friedval was responsible for the kidnappings, then he certainly was in danger of getting the s**t kicked out of him, courtesy of Amalia Stern.

Sorry about the wait! I'll reply quicker this time promise! XD
Derrick went silent and gave Amalia a long, doubtful look. The purple-haired man sighed and then changed to a lighter expression. "Hahah! I see, I see. My partner's got a penchant for getting mixed up with trouble people, I'll give you that..." He paused and turned to reminesce, looking back towards the small building meant to supply this post. "The tattoos and scar come from a part of his past he's left behind and buried. It took a lot of effort for him to cut those ties, and he hasn't had anything to do with them since. It would be best to keep it that way." Back to Amalia, he crossed his arms and spoke almost apologetically. "That's exactly why you need to give me a good reason not to send you away if you're trying to stir something up with him. Why do you think he's in danger?"

No worries, stuff happens!
Amalia held her salute, as well as her disdain. "We were just passing by the slums, and we heard overheard someone talking about a hit." She lied quickly, still unsure whether or not Derrick was trustworthy. "They said to be on the look out for a member of the Garrison with tattoos and scarring on his face. When we went to confront them, they ran away, but I fear he may still be in danger."

Larisa followed along behind the others quietly, shaken by how their investigation was going. The way Niklaus had spoken to them, dismissing their concerns and harshly misjudging their motivations, had thrown her so far off base she hadn't even known how to react. If she'd been there alone, that would have been the end of it and they wouldn't have achieved anything. She'd have left with tears in her eyes, not fired back the way Amalia had. She'd been appalled at the time, but now she just felt useless and more than a little betrayed by the fact that her chosen branch could be so uncaring about this terrible situation.
Sighing heavily, the blonde glanced up to tune back into their newest source of information. Would this Garrison soldier be more willing to help? Jeong had kept his questions basic, probably to avoid the level of backlash they'd gotten from Niklaus, but she wondered what he would say if they admitted they were trying to help with the missing children. What if it prompted him to share more instead, what if it would make him remember something else he'd seen on patrol, or maybe- Her eyes widened. Friedval had scars and tattoos like that?
The trainee gasped despite herself, realizing what that might mean. Amalia was pushing on with a cover story about the man being in danger and Larisa wasn't sure Derrick was believing it at all, but she needed to help somehow. Even if it had suddenly become so hard to trust in the soldiers of this district, she wanted to believe, just for a few minutes more, that Derrick really was concerned for a friend and not covering for an accomplice. And if he was, maybe he would respond more to a softer response.
"Please, Sir, the sorts of things they were saying..." Larisa was nervous, but maybe the shakiness of her voice would sell her worry. "We just want to check in with him to be sure he's alright. I couldn't bear it if something had happened that we might have been able to prevent."

[ knocking on the door of the supply building ; talking with anyone inside ]
"You don't mind if we take a look around, right? Thanks." Derrick had glanced back towards the small supply building on the post and Hwan started towards without waiting for an answer. Amalia and Larisa were doing a good job keeping him engaged and he trusted the two girls to hold his attention or hold him in place should he try to interfere with their looking around. Jeong would hopefully back him up and prevent anyone from fleeing the scene.
The purple man seemed wary or distrustful of them as the others had all been and the twin was riled up enough to no longer care about politeness or pleasantries. Honestly, with how little information they were finding, he was starting to wonder what the hell was going on. Was everyone in this city so incompetent that they either refused to share what they knew or on the flip side paid so little attention they honestly knew nothing?
The idea that perhaps the military was involved did cross his mind. Old Barb's hesitance to talk to them could've come from their jackets, proudly displaying their military allegiance. It was starting to look like a grim but probable possibility with Niklaus's strong protests at their involvement as well as Friedval's description. Knocking on the supply door, he called out to see if Derrick's partner was inside. Supposedly they were both here so it shouldn't be too hard to find him, right?
"Excuse me, is Friedval around? We'd like to ask you some questions." He left it vague what the questions were about to avoid scaring anyone off if there was a shady past involved. If pressed, Hwan would simply lie and pretend he was interested in shadowing Friedval as a Garrison officer and in search of advice.

[ knocking on the door of the supply building with hwan ; backing hwan up ]
'Scars from a past left behind...' Jeong listened to Derrick with a pensive expression, shutting up and letting Amalia take over from here. She'd given them the most new information last time and seemed to have a good handle on how to lie, something he appreciated in an ally. A smooth talker himself, he tended to stay from her louder style for himself but appreciated it none the less. It was good to see a woman not intimidated by the superiors around here too.
"Yeah, we'll be right back." Following Hwan to the supply building, he wondered if Friedval was hiding inside. It sounded like someone was lying about the night time activities around here and if Friedval had really turned over a new leaf from his possible past involvement- he might just be the person finally willing to tell them some information. They were still going blindly around without any clues to connect and it was hard to try and think up anything they could do to help. This Friedval guy was their second to last lead and he really hoped it would pay off.
They still had no clue where Saga had ridden off to, after all.

The more Amalia spoke, the more suspicious Derrick was. With a palm on his face, he shook his head, unimpressed by the obvious lies. "If someone's the type of person to be talking about murder, how could they run away after seeing a cute little girl like yourself?"
He leaned in and pointed a finger at each of the girls."That's right, what am I thinking? You two are DEFINITELY up to no good, but you're just trainees. What harm could you do? You look pretty well off if you ask me, no way you're in with the gangs. I'll bring you to see Friedval, sure, if you'd just have the common courtesy to tell me the truth."
He straightened up and crossed his arms again.

TRIGGER!

TRIGGER!
Noticing too late that the twins had walked off to the supply building, Derrick turned towards them in a hurry- but in vain, for he struggled to find the words for this situation. Finally, his shoulders slumped. "Aw, man..."
It wasn't hard to figure out that the two Garrison partners were close as brothers, from the way they would talk about each other- so indeed, it isn't difficult to envision that one of them might be covering for the other. When the knocks were met with nothing but silence, Derrick trod up to the supply building and turned the handle. In a deliberately silent motion, he held the door open for the trainees, annoyed. "Fine. You want to look? Go ahead and look all you want."
Inside, there were stacked wooden boxes, against the walls, and tin buckets full of tools gleaming in the dim sunbeams filtering through marred windows. Heavy dust hung in the air.
There was a paper note folded on one of the boxes. For anyone who picks it up, it read: "Dear Derrick, I had a big fight with my girlfriend last night... I'm just not up for work today. You really wouldn't want to see me like this. Help a friend out, alright? Don't let anyone know I'm skipping my shift. Not like anybody ever comes to our post, it should be easy. I'm gonna spend the day soul searching. See you later. Don't miss me!"

[ examining the letter ; questioning derrick ]
"I don't understand. We were told you both had patrol duty last night, when did he have time to fight with his girlfriend?" Jeong frowned, re-reading the letter suspiciously. It was possible that Friedval had fought with the girl before his shift but wouldn't he have told Derrick in person then? Or skipped out on his evening shift too? It was incredibly improbable the guard had argued with his girl after his shift because it would've been fairly late when he got off and most people were in bed. It was possible that this letter was telling the truth but Jeong was not inclined to believe anything from the people of this town right now. Frustrated by the long goose hunt, he wondered if they were really going to get to the bottom of this mystery at this rate.
"How about you tell us what you really think is going on. We could go check on him if you're worried." Jeong looked back to Derrick, his patience clearly starting to thin. He tried to keep a semi-polite tone to his voice but didn't expect much. Derrick had deceived them once now, it wouldn't be a surprise if he tried to do so again.

I wasn't sure what the night patrol hours are so I assumed they're from around 5pm-1am at least. If Jeong's suspicion over the time stuff is wayyyy off the mark let me know and I'll edit! I just wasn't sure!

Amalia's eye twitched as Derrick easily saw through her subterfuge. Just as well, she thought, this lying s**t isn't for me. Balling her fists, she glared at the garrison soldier. "You want the truth? Fine. Truth is, I think your partner is involved in a kidnapping ring and I want to kick his a** if he is. Truth is, there's a little girl whose friends are all going missing, and not a single ******** person in this town seems to give a s**t. Truth is, I think that the garrison might even be covering this s**t up, and I want some <********> answers!"
Her fists shook with fury at her sides as her voice rose with each sentence. At the end of it, she was nearly yelling, a rage completely overtaking her. In that moment, she didn't even care what would happen to her. All that mattered was Roxy and her friends. Everything else was secondary.

Larisa had never been any good at lying, it made her nervous and she always jumbled it all up somehow, but she'd thought for sure that supporting Amalia's lie might have been a different case. She didn't have to make up the story, just agree with it, and it would fall into place because Amalia was so determined that it should. But she'd been wrong and Derrick had seen through them, and now there really wasn't anything else to do but just tell him the truth, was there? They'd finally see whether what she'd been thinking before was true, that he might be the one soldier in this horrible district to care enough to help.
But then the supply building and the note and he'd been lying too. While the blonde struggled with the surge of complete frustration she felt at this revelation, Jeong began to question the letter and Amalia....Amalia got angry. She was good at that, Larisa was beginning to see. The trainee took a deep breath, calming herself before she got anywhere near that level of anger, and then narrowed her eyes at the man. "A few moments ago, you said you could take us to him if we were honest. We're being very honest now."
And with this kind of honesty, there was still one more truth to throw at him. They hadn't just come here on their own just to bother the two soldiers, they'd come by the word of another Garrison soldier. "We were sent here by Niklaus Dumitru, and if you don't help us, we will be reporting back to him fully on just why we were unable to question your partner." Derrick didn't really need to know how unlikely Niklaus was to take them seriously, but she thought this might get the point across.

Aaand sorry for going fast u gaize, I'm running out of time 8'D *shot xD*
Derrick crossed his arms as the trainees read the note left on the table, expecting them to be satisfied and leave him be for the rest of today- but no, it seemed they still had a lot to ask about. Since they were so hell-bent on investigating his friend, however, the tall man's curiosity had been piqued and he listened with interest to what Jeong had to say.
"Hey, a lot can happen in the early hours of the morning. He lived at his girlfriend's, after all." He offered, tilting his head. It did occur to him that it was an odd hour for a big argument, though.
Amalia's outburst had him wincing. Ouch. But his eyes also widened at that admission about the kidnappings. So, these children really were investigating, and not just trying to mess with his friend... Still, it wasn't any reason for these two to take it out on him. Well, all right, maybe he deserved these pangs of pain in his heart. He felt guilty enough to decide to help them out, whether or not a scary girl with a scar was yelling at him and a pigtailed one was making threats. He was thankful, even. He finally had someone to talk to.
Derrick attempted a pacifying smile, holding up his hands in a casual motion. "There, there, that is no language for a lady. And hey, don't do that, I don't know what Friedval might do to me if he gets punished because I couldn't cover for him against a bunch of kids... but," he paced into the room, joining the others, and looked at all of them with a determined expression. "-I admire people like you. And something has been bothering me as well. You want the truth?"
There was a kind of thrill to setting out for a cause, and so the Garrison soldier's voice dripped with anticipation as he placed his hands on the table and leaned forward. "Friedval's been skipping more and more frequently of late, always with his girlfriend as an excuse... and with only one night guard on patrol, you can imagine..."
He stopped, struggling to meet the gazes of the trainees. As if being suffocated by what he was saying, he picked up again, less steadily. "Well, you... can imagine all of the blind spots that open up." He sighed, staring into the table. "Ever since I heard about the kidnappings, I couldn't help but feel at fault. Most of us think they're just lies made up by poor children, but imagine if they were real? Then wouldn't the kidnappings have escaped our notice by taking advantage of the gaps created by faulty surveillance?"
After remaining silent for a few seconds, he broke into a grin and chuckled with embarrassment at having unloaded all of that just now. "Honestly, what is this place, a confession booth? Well, kids, I agree that Fred needs to be spoken to. However, I can't leave this post and don't know where he is. His girlfriend is your best lead. I met her a couple times, but they always seemed to be getting along fine. Here," Producing a pencil from his coat, he scribbled a map on the piece of paper left by Friedval and marked it with an X. "It's a wood cabin north of the dingy little bakery a couple streets away. You're looking for Matia."

Larisa let out a sigh, crossing her arms. She'd wanted someone to act like they cared, and she supposed she'd finally found that. Derrick sounded guilty, like he really honestly felt bad about the situation, but she couldn't help the bitter thought that he hadn't done much to make things better. Feeling bad wasn't helping the children, it just wasn't enough, not when there was a gaping hole in patrols that he couldn't be bothered to fix because of his partner. "They're not lying," she challenged quietly, "you don't have to imagine."
The trainee opened her mouth to add more, but then paused and shook her head. If he didn't already know what he needed to do to take responsibility, nothing she said was going to change that, not really. Instead she took the map he'd drawn them, scanning it and then nodding. "So we're looking for a woman named Matia, then." She glanced at the others, knowing they were probably still so angry and frustrated, and reached out to tentatively touch Amalia's elbow to get her attention. She'd been the most angry of them all, or it seemed so anyway, and Larisa was a little worried she wouldn't let this go and move on to the next lead. "Let's go find her, alright?"
She waited a moment, glancing at the twins as well to see if they were ready, and then turned to lead the way out. She thought belatedly that it would have been more polite to say goodbye to Derrick, but she was honestly just so disappointed in him. If nothing else, though, he'd managed to give them directions that were easy enough to follow. It wasn't long at all before the wooden cabin he'd described came into view before them. She hesitated a moment, then, with another resigned sigh, moved forward to knock insistently.
"Excuse me! We're, um, we're looking for a Friedval or Matia! Is anyone home?"

Amalia seethed quietly Derrick spoke. At Larisa's touch, the green haired girl nodded quietly and turned to leave, but not before flipping Derrick off. ******** him.
At the cabin, Amalia crossed her arms, still angry, but not as much as the walk over had given her time to cool off. For now, she simply waited, although a small part of her wanted to just kick the door down.

[ talking to anyone inside the cabin ; trying the cabin door ]
The mention of a bakery caught his attention and Hwan wondered if it was the one he was familiar with. But no, Derrick had said dingy and the place he knew was very clean... Following behind the girls, he and his brother also traveled to the remote cabin where Friedval's girlfriend lived. Somehow, after the way the current events had been playing out, he had an inkling that the fight last night had been a break up and the damn b*****d had moved out this morning.
"Friedval! Open up!" After a few seconds of silence from Larisa's first knock, Hwan leaned forward and banged on the door loudly. He wasn't sure what they might find here. If the man really was involved with the kidnapping ring, what kinds of messed up s**t would be in his house? Was this Matia girl helping him or not? Impatient and tired, by this point his mood was closer to the green hair girl's than the blonde's.
"Screw this, we're just going in. Amalia, cover me. Jeong, watch the windows and listen for anyone going out the back." He tried the door handle to see if it would open. If they accidentally broke into someone's house, it would be bad, yeah, but he figured reasonable people would hear their story and also want them to catch the bad guys, right?
