Ayotunde
Comes from a secret tribe of Aquatics, traveling to learn more about "Outsiders", considered a great warrior. Headstrong, loves a challenge, protective of and loyal to whoever he considers "tribe". (Family and friends get lumped in that definition, even if they aren't part of the tribe itself.)
My idea/s are that---
So given how afraid Cherry is of most people and Ayotunde's odd face, definitely not a love at first sight thing XD I picture their first meeting being something of a surprise (and probably scare) to Cherry. For example I don't know where Cherry lives, but Ayotunde's home is located in a swampy marsh. Fog, trees, and moss everywhere, soggy ground, quicksand, and water all over the place. People see his glow and it's like a will o' the wisp. She could happen upon him in a similar setting (I'm guessing she lives more woods than marsh though) while scared and upset and looking for a place to hide. Another scenario is when he hunts he goes deep in the water. She could be swimming, see the light, and go to look. Or another scenario would be them in a town, Cherry taking quiet back ways to avoid people, and running into Ayotunde who also wants to avoid all the people. In pretty much all those scenarios I see him making eye contact with her and then just vanishing into the gloom. Basically they just get glimpses of each other.
Second meeting would be when Cherry's in trouble somehow. Someone harassing her, some kind of critter giving her trouble, lost/scared/really needs help/probably injured, or any combo of those. Something where Ayotunde helps her out, and sort of goes from creepy monster to maybe good guy in her mind.
By the third time they meet maybe she's a bit curious? Ayotunde would be. Conversation (or swimming in the general vicinity of each other, if underwater) happens. I'm hoping from here they can sort of nudge their way into friendship. Friendship would eventually grow and strength to love, but how long that road is and how many events happen along the way would, I think, depend mostly on Cherry and how much/how long it takes for her to really trust Ayotunde.
I'm not sure what exactly you want for her. Ayotunde is a protective person and would become so with Cherry. How protective really depends on how Cherry acts. He is willing to be a defender, but if she wants to be a bit more independent he won't hover. She sounds like she can take care of herself just fine, she just doesn't like meeting new people.
Lemme know if you like him for her. And it doesn't even have to be that plot, that was just the first thing that came into my head.
