"7 can be considered a mimic, he is learning but yet to find that which sparks...personality, I suppose. I am aware and a person. I was the first to become so," Ezekiel insisted quietly, his pride obviously hurt. "That fellow Jan, he tried to teach me to ape your mannerisms, but once I truly awoke there was no need. I'm not you, but I am myself. We share a face and perhaps some...basic traits, but none of that is yours to dismiss or take away."

There was something painfully idealistic and almost innocent about the clone as he spoke. In contrast, 7 was flipping Taym off with a look of dull hatred. There was actually a very good chance that 7's awareness had been sparked off. It just wasn't a very enthusiastic about it.

"How long before you've learned everything they can teach you and you get rid of them?" Pointedly without looking or interacting. Pointedly as though they were monkeys on the other side of a sheet of glass. Less than. "If they don't scar how do you hurt them? Ripley Crowell said they have some sort of regenerative property. What makes a dent?"

"Get rid of them?" The doctor's bemusement was clear from both tone and expression. "That's not how science works, my dear." He was interrupted when 7, at Taym's question, launched himself at the hunter, knocking him to the floor. The clone straddled the hunter, pinning bony wrists down with one hand.

"Ezekiel is not very physically capable I'm afraid," the doctor's explained. "But 7 moves with rage, a thing he seems to have often."

The clone leaned over Taym, and opened his mouth where the bloody stump of a tongue waggled at him. For a moment it looked like a thick strand of blood would drip down onto the hunter, but the blood twisted back into the creature's mouth. A breath later and dozens of strands were reaching out from the wound, twisting and bending and straining like living things in their own right.

"Also from a rather crude sense of humor," the doctor amended. "It appears that someone removed 7's tongue prior to the mission it was captured on. They do not, in fact, regenerate. Rather, their parts reattach themselves. Since we do not have the tongue in question, the wound neither closes nor heals, but simply seeks the missing part. This is true for all appendages, as well as vital organs. Let him go."

Through a film of rage and terror H's words barely registered, captured, unconsciously filed away for later.

(What would not occur to him later was the fact that as soon as he had a chance to move his hands no longer shook, but moved confidently, steadily, even though anger was the most reliable trigger the trembling had.)

It didn't matter whether the thing had designs on obeying H's mild orders or not. Taym moved as swiftly and as lethally as a tomcat with a cornered garter snake, propelled by survival instinct and terror and raw animal hatred. With thoughtless speed he surged up, and went from being straddled to pinning, knees trapping 7's arms to its side as he shoved it to the floor, grabbing it by the collar to slam its hateful face into the ground twice, three times, the third with the satisfying, sick sound of breaking teeth. He had no memory of summoning Fiona, only a sudden realization that he was digging his fingers into a face the thing had no right to wear, yanking its head back as hard as he could and his fingers suddenly bloody, from the stump of a tongue, from the busted lip, from his fingernails sinking into skin, or from the sudden stream running down the blade as it bit and sawed into a skinny stubbled neck.

H was forgotten. The thing calling itself Ezekiel was forgotten. His face contorted with hatred and exhilaration so complete that he looked little better than animal himself, he yanked the thing's head back further still, blood coursing over the knife's hilt, beading on the brass stag's antlers.

In the process, Taym would find out something that Konstantin Bashmet had known for quite some time: the clone may heal quickly as if never injured, but they experienced pain like any other creature. Animal screams of agony accompanied his actions.

"I would be annoyed at the mess, you know," the doctor explained mildly as he observed, "except there won't be one."

In the background someone was sobbing. Ezekiel, curled in a corner and no longer able to watch.

As Taym took his time, blood began seeping back into wounds and the living red strands snaked out, seeking to reconnect the gaping throat.

He'd been ready for the screams. He'd already heard them a dozen times over. He hadn't been ready for the blood, but didn't seem to notice it, not even when it began crawling back towards the source. For that matter he still didn't seem to notice H, either. He barked a hysterical, split-second laugh at the strange absurdity of his cigarette butt adhering to the clone's face where he'd slammed it into the ground.

The knife, slim and lovely and discreet and small, was in one sense not made for what he was doing. In another sense this was its entire purpose, and his own feral bloodlust was fed by a sensation of stretching legs and charging and an absolute delight in the sound of a subjugated, interrupted, wet scream, even one delivered in the voice of her wielder, even one that she understood, better than Taym in his delirium, was temporary.

The head came free and, dimly aware that it was no permanent end anyway, he let it go, kicking it out of the way as he snaked to his feet and went after the cringing one instead, merciless. This one had hair, which made the job much easier. He twisted its neck to face H, finally acknowledging him, feral-eyed over the thing's shoulder as he yanked its head back, further, further, and panting he asked, barely audible through the rising screams: "Why haven't you figured out what kills them?"

Ezekiel sobbed and pleaded, its panic turned previous clarity into desperate nonsensical babble. He didn't understand what he had done, but he could learn. Just please please please please... The broken mantra continued as H answered calmly, "Because so far nothing does. Once we had two, of course, we tried, and tried, and they simply..." he made a resigned gesture toward 7's head, being dragged toward the rest of the body and gaining speed the closer it got.

"You've upset him terribly, you know," the doctor sighed. "There's a theory that they each hold some aspect of their source material, though we'll need more to determine the veracity of that particular notion. Would you like to assist in testing them?"

"Shut up," he hissed in the thing's ear, "or I'll make it worse." How exactly one could make very slow decapitation worse was hard to say, but the threat was sincere.

"One of them killed a teenage girl," he spat. "Set them on fire. Blow them up. Drown them in acid. Try harder."

"Tried it, tried many times, and tried it again using a variety of compounds. Mister Thompson, are you presuming to tell me my job?" The bemusement was still there, and now it was growing playful.

"Teenage girls die all the time, and for a variety of reasons. Though if I recall correctly, this one sacrificed her life to save the hunter who was unable to keep up with the clone. Apparently they're getting more skilled."

Ezekiel's throat was halfway sawed-through, and at this, at H's calm reply, Taym let him go, shoving him to the ground and kicking him aside. The knife vanished.

He grabbed the Tolstoy off the table as he passed it, stuffing it inside of his coat, and he went past H and out the door, into the hallway, where he immediately, inevitably, sorry about the mess, H, threw up. There was not much of it.

Shaken and shaking, upright but supported by one arm against the wall, he stared dully at the vomit and a distant thought of I need a ******** hit touched his awareness and was gone.

While he was outside the two clones healed. 7's head reattached and he went back to his seat, sullen and angry and drawing circles and circles on the papers and sometimes a boot, as seen from below its crushing heel. He seemed very unchanged, physically and emotionally, from the assault.

Ezekiel was rocking quietly under the table, trying his best to make himself small and to mute the sobbing that had yet to truly cease. The doctor made a brief, quiet phone call, and soon enough the man in loud bowling shirt was strolling down the hall with a mop and bucket, cigar dangling from his mouth. "You done?" He asked mildly, "'Cause if not I can wait. I'm not above cleaning a floor unlike some of the squints, but twice would kinda suck."

He gestured at the puddle, scooting aside and sliding down the wall to sink to the floor, arms around his knees. "Nothing left to throw up," he said shakily, and then, with a swell of shame, he burst into tears.

The mess was cleaned with a professional swiftness and the hall echoes with the clack of wood as the man propped the mop against the wall. Popping a squat next to the crying man he nodded sympathetically, "Yeah, just let it all out. Sometimes a man just has to cry a bit. Don't know what happened in there, but given the who's and the what's, it's hard to imagine what could go right, yeah? Just being in a room with the boss himself has made me cry into my pillow at night." In a small, hurt voice that didn't match his expression at all, he added, "He's kinda mean, ya know?"

"Awww, c'mon. I'm sure you could totally do better than me." The man exhaled a thin cloud of smoke and explained, "Once I had this girlfriend and things were getting all hot and worked up so I took my pants off? And she just deflated. Literally." He lowered his voice conspiratorially, "She was a blow-up doll. Sometimes life is hard on a man."

Returning the cigar to his mouth, he went on, "I cried then too, while I tried to patch things up with her." Another pause, "Ran out of ducktape."
