Satisfied by Oliver's timely silence on the matter, Finn used his lance to deflect as much of Arorangi's blow as it came, before stepping to the side to allow Oliver to retaliate, and then jumping in again. The two of them were chatting, and that was fine with Finn, who found he had little else to say and would rather concentrate on what he was doing. < Charged. > His weapon hissed at him in his mind with the undertone of a deep growl and the raspy sound of scales brushing together. Be that as it may, Finn still owed Oliver a second round of defense, if only to keep it even between the two men. HP: 50 Defending: Oliver for 3

"What is- AH!" Oliver yelped as Finn leapt in front of him. Couldn't he at least give some better warning? The kid wasn't used to working side by side with someone, this was his first spar that wasn't strictly one-on-one, and he was hesitant to use the wide swing range the axe required while Finn was even temporarily inside that radius. He knew his friend was fast, but he didn't want to misstep and accidentally hit him instead! The kid's nerves were starting to get to him, now that he had someone on his team, even just temporarily. He didn't want to mess up, he couldn't mess up, having someone defend you meant you had to be a person worth defending. Even though it was merely a means to an end here, a way for Finn to get his full charge, Oliver couldn't help but feel a little jittery. The next strike was ill-coordinated and weak, the axe having lost a great deal of momentum. It was a good thing it was such a giant axe or Oliver might not have landed the hit at all. HP: 20 DMG: 2

Finn was defending Oliver now, which Arorangi thought was a much better idea. Not that he thought Oliver was weak, but because he was a lot smaller and that weapon a lot more difficult to wield than the spear in Arorangi's own hands.
"What is what?" asked Arorangi cheerfully, stumbling backwards as the next swing of Oliver's axe grazed his shoulder. Oliver's face was flushed and he looked somewhat frustrated, but Arorangi didn't press it, instead taking a step back and then leaping forward again, swinging the spear.
"You are doing so well little bird!"
He was so cheerful his next hit may have been a little too enthusiastic.

It was when Arorangi swung again that Finn gave up, the other mans strength, powered by muscled arms that the moon intermediate might have found attractive under different circumstances, breaking through his defense like it were nothing. Finn couldn't help but think that if the large, tanned man was this strong now, he was going to be a ******** tank by the time he got to full hunter. Stepping to the side, and reaching up to wipe sweat from his brow, Finn gave them each a nod and waved a hand in their direction. "Continue on, I've got the charge I needed. I'll just be over there waiting for whenever you're finished." Which would likely be soon, if the larger mans attacks and Oliver's weak counters were any indication. Making his way back over to the where his medical gear was sitting in wait, Finn bent down to pluck up a bottle of water he'd also brought with him, twisting it open and raising it to his lips for a long sip.

Oliver yelped, his feet slipping in the sand as Arorangi's spear made it past even Finn's defence once again. And with a great deal of force still in it. The larger trainee was so cheerful, optimistic even now when Oliver was being completely beaten down. His own axe once again barely clipped the other man. "Wait, what?!" Oliver exclaimed, just barely recovering his balance. He was starting to tire now, and the axe seemed to pull him around a little bit more after each swing. How Arorangi could still compliment him was a complete mystery. He glanced over in Finn's direction, for once thinking very much the same thing. They might not keep him waiting very long at all. Now that Finn was defending neither of them, it made it a little easier to maneuver - though Arorangi still felt somewhat guilty about having hit Oliver as hard as he had. The poor kid was yelping and dancing around, the axe swinging towards him and missing by several inches, the tip of it barely grazing Arorangi's torso.
"You are holding your own!" he said enthusiastically. "You have done very well, you could have given up long before now, but you held on! It is impressive, little bird!"
His next lunge, however, overshot a bit, Arorangi missing by a mile.

By this point, Finn had hunkered down in the pale sound, knees bent and elbows resting atop them as he sat, crouched, waiting for the spar to reach it's conclusion so that he could fix up whatever bloody mess was left behind. He already had his money on Arorangi coming out the victor, the mans size and strength, and apparent skill as well, against Oliver's much more subdued and, let's face it, weak approach seemed to really hold no contest. Oliver's glance was met with a hard, emotionless stare, and without speaking, Finn shifted his position a little, then looked away and towards his supplies, reaching out to adjust the position of some of the items, to make sure they were within easy range of grabbing should he only require a couple of things.

Oliver knew that stare. Finn was very good at it, the message meant to express ranging from "I am so tired of your s**t" to "Try harder, Princess, or you're gonna die." Yet for some reason, it's use was never able to change Oliver's belief in Finn as a good friend. Perhaps it was because Finn didn't mince his words, or try to soothe everything, and that honesty could be appreciated in it's own right. This time it had a bit of a motivational effect on the kid, interpreting it as an "I'm getting these ready for you," sort of stare at least reminded him he didn't have to be afraid of the outcome. He would get hurt, maybe hurt a lot when his shield broke. But Finn was there with those supplies, so it would be okay. With his courage bolstered, his axe began it's heavy swing. "I-I couldn't just give up," He said in reply to Arorangi. It seemed like a weird thing to be praised for, he really had no choice in the matter. Giving up hadn't even crossed his mind, despite the potential for serious harm. "Finn asked me to help," Oliver offered, a weak explanation that didn't quite express his reasons for continuing. The axe swung high, and then crashed down... In what would have been a heavy blow if the sand hadn't shifted so unpredictably under Oliver's feet. The impact of the blade striking the ground instead of his target was enough to send grains of sand flying. HP: 14 DMG: 0

Finn was still sitting off to the side, getting things prepared, and Oliver was attempting to swing his axe again, though it wasn't a very well-aimed blow. The entire blade shifted as it moved towards him, and Arorangi easily dodged it, sidestepping so that he could feel the swish of displaced hair against his face.
He smiled a little. "You are doing well, little bird! See? You are not giving up, like you said, and that is a good thing!"
Arorangi readjusted his footing and jabbed his spear heartily in the direction of Oliver's torso.

"Finn bribed you to help." The moon intermediate decided to correct the young man, internally wincing as the life trainees attempted attack failed horribly, leaving him open for another jab with the spear. This Arorangi seemed to be a natural, where Oliver was quite the opposite. "Atta boy, princess. Just keep him thinking that you're no good at this and than get him at the end." Finn mock cheered, giving his head a small shake.

Oliver moved fast, mid-swing, and deflected the stab. Painfully. With his arm instead of the weapon that would have resisted taking damage. But he had succeeded in one regard, the attack didn't throw him off balance or prevent the large axe from gaining momentum. "It's... not like that!" Oliver squeaked. "I thought the food was... um... a thank you or something!" Finn was never very straightforward with things like that, so naturally the kid was going to assume the best of his friend. Whether Finn deserved it or not. Thankfully the axe was able to pick up speed even when Oliver was unable to focus entirely on the battle, and when the blow actually hit home it was almost a shock. "S-sorry!" He stammered, for a second forgetting that hitting Arorangi with the axe was the point of this whole exercise. HP: 9 DMG: 4

One last swing, and -
"Okay," said Arorangi, as he pulled his spear back towards him, planting the end of it on the ground and smiling brightly at Oliver. "I think that is enough for now, my friend. You have hit well, see?" He held out his arm, where a bruise had started to form from Oliver's last swing. "You are stronger than you think, so do not believe that you are weak, mate!"
Hearing that Finn was bribing the poor kid made him glance sideways at him, eyebrows raised, but Arorangi said nothing, merely offered him a pleasant smile as well.

Finn simply shook his head at Oliver's response, because he knew that the kid likely wouldn't have even gotten out of his room that day if not for the promise of junk food at the end of this little exercise. Still, he opted to keep his mouth shut on the matter, standing back up straight and crossing his arms over his chest, with Trynt stabbed back into the ground nearby. And then, for no apparent reason what so ever, Arorangi seemed to have...stopped. Well, his weapon was still summoned but he had taken on the stance of somebody finished. "Woah, woah, wait a second. You're not finished." Finn narrowed his eye at the larger man, "Nobody is meant to be finished here until somebodies shield breaks. Are you volunteering?" He asked, with a raised eyebrow, before his lips pulled up into a smirk. "Because I can help with that." kuroopu okay now these two should totes be bffs rite?

The gentle insistence that he was stronger than he thought was lost on Oliver as he shook his head. "Finn's right, it's not enough yet." He sounded nervous, like he was trying to hide his fear. "Y-you have to break it." Oliver swung the axe again. His shield had broken once before, and it had been terrifying. That time it had been under the safety of the barrier, where there was no danger of being killed by his opponent's weapon. But he realized it was easier this way, being the one who's shield was going to break. Now that it was down to that he didn't think he could have kept going until someone else was hurt. It was a good thing it turned out this way. It was good practice. This time he didn't apologize when the axe hit, hopefully making it easier for the other trainee to finish it. HP: 7 DMG: 4

He'd forgotten about the original rule, which was to break the shield purposefully; and now Arorangi gave Finn a slightly scrutinizing look, though a faint smile still remained on his face. He swept a large, tattooed hand over his face, wiping away a few beads of sweat, and readjusted his hold on his weapon, swinging it around so that it rested on his shoulder.
"All right," he said, shaking his head. "All right, you're right, I will continue until his shield breaks and all is ready for you to step in. But I will not break it too much because I do not want to hurt him." Arorangi cast a reassuring smile in Oliver's direction, shifting as the blade swung towards him, the axe catching him about the shoulder.
(He hadn't decided whether he liked this Finn character or not.)
Lowering the spear, Arorangi readjusted his footing and then lunged, the tip of the weapon grazing along Oliver's side.
