Run? Heck yeah, he was going to run. And this time he’d find a way to turn the tables on her. Ignoring the fire burning in his side, he shifted out of his feral form and into his larger, horse form. With longer, more powerful legs, he could escape faster. Just then that was the priority. Though the idea of running away from a fight rubbed him raw, he knew better than to try and stay and fight her. Much as he hated to admit it, today was not the day that he would manage to exact his revenge from the creature who had brought him into this world. He had to run to fight another day. It would come, he knew it would. But not today. He lurched into the trees, racing away from Kali.

Kali paced the small clearing at the base of the tree that had, moments ago, been housing her useless progeny. She would give him a few minutes head start, and then begin the game again. Maybe, if he had any ounce of learning capability, he’d realize what had happened.

Xanatos ran, crashing through the trees. Everywhere he went, birds and small animals fled. For a moment, the thrill of power washed through him. The fled him out of fear, and that fear was tantalizing. He almost gave in to the desire to chase them. But then he remembered, with no little bitterness, that HE was the one being chased just now. He couldn’t afford to stalk prey when he was prey. No, he had to put as much distance between him and Kali as he could. Maybe he wasn’t strong enough to kill her today, which was obvious by the blood soaking into his fur. But if he stayed under her paw, he would never be strong enough. This he knew as certainly as he knew his own name. So he ignored the scampering prey in favor of trying to find another hiding place. Maybe.. .just maybe… he should finally leave the forest entirely. If he just took off, would she continue hunting him? Would she even be able to find him?

The minutes passed far too slowly for Kali’s patience. When she finally deemed that enough time had passed, she began to follow the smell of blood. The fool hadn’t bothered to stop and tend to his injury, nor had he finished cleaning the blood from his snack from his fur. This was going to be far too easy.

For no real reason, Xanatos took a sharp left then began to bob and weave. If he made his path as random as possible, maybe he could buy himself some time to rest, eventually. It was a possibility, one that he was going to need soon. He was losing an alarming amount of blood. More than he had expected, considering that he had thought the scratches weren’t that serious. Soon, he’d have to stop and tend his injuries. But not yet. He could hear her coming…

Kali moved silently through the trees. She paused when Xanatos’ scent took a sharp turn. What in the world? She frowned as she scouted around to find the reason for the abrupt change. But she found nothing. Was the little idiot just being random now? That was… new. She wasn’t certain what to think of that. Well… it was something new at least. Maybe this round would be more interesting.

The crashing was growing louder, and it wasn’t coming from Xanatos. He stumbled, knowing that it was his enemy, that it was Kali. Never mind that she had never created so much noise before in any of their games. Never mind that Xanatos was the one who had always bumbled through the forest while the older, far more skilled skinwalker was as silent as a shadow. He was trying something new, surely she could be too. The point was that SOMETHING besides him was crashing through the trees, and the only thing that really concerned him was the female skinwalker.

There was no denying, there was something else in the forest. Now that she was getting closer, Kali could hear two distinct sounds of crashing. One was her idiot offspring, she was sure. The other… what creature had been stupid enough to wander into a known skinwalker forest? Whatever it was, she would deal with it once she had dealt with the boy.

Xantos was so busy looking behind him that he didn’t even notice the rocky wall until he ran head first into it. He stumbled back and could have sworn he heard little birds chirping around his head. He most definitely saw stars. He quickly shook away the spots in his vision and lurched to his feet. A quick glance left and right showed him that, not too far away, there was an opening in the wall, more a crack than anything else. He could slip through easily enough, but then, so could Kali. And yet, maybe it would give her pause. She might not chase him into a narrow area where her movements would be restricted. He shifted to his feral form and slipped into the crack. The sides of the wall brushed against his fur but he ignored the pressure, just as he was ignoring the pain. He limped his way into complete darkness.

Kali slipped out of the trees and to the caves at the same time as the source of the other rustling. A boar burst from the trees and glared at her with insane red eyes. With a snarl, she pounced on it, before it could even think to charge her. With a well placed slice of her claws and closing of her jaws, she slit its throat and snapped it’s spine. The maneuver didn’t kill the creature right away, but that was fine. She left it to bleed out and followed the smell of her preferred prey… to a crack in the rock cliff. Fool…

Darkness swallowed him. Some creatures may have felt it pressing in on them, may have been worried about the rocks caving in on them. Without being able to see where he was going, he should have been nervous. But there wasn’t room in him for concern. He was filled with purpose, and that purpose was to escape. The darker it was, the narrower the path got, the less likely he’d be followed by Kali. Of course, if he had been even a bit smarter, or maybe a smidgen less arrogant, he might have realized that Kali was sleeker than him, smaller. He would run out of room far sooner than she ever would. But it didn’t even occur to him that he would be more restricted or vulnerable. Of course, one could lay the blame to the bloodloss. As it was, he was going to keep plowing forward until he ran out of room or until he broke free from the dark tunnels.

Kali slipped into the caves and followed the scent of blood until the light went out completely. She could sense that the tunnel continued onward. Doubtlessly, Xanatos would keep going until he found a way out… or died. There might even be other exits to the caves. But Kali had no interest in hunting in the dark. The game bored her, and he was a hopeless case. After a moment’s thought, she decided to wash her paws of him. She backed out of the cave and went to the dead boar, filling herself with her kill and dismissing her offspring from her mind.

A breeze ruffled his fur. Fresh air. Or maybe he was hallucinating. The world was beginning to spin a bit, which was impressive considering he couldn’t see anything. He leaned against a wall, panting as he tried to get a fresh wind. Hallucination or not, he would go toward the freshness. If he was going to die, then at least it would be in the illusion of freedom. With a small burst of strength, he pushed toward the breeze. With almost jarring suddenness, he burst free from the tunnel and into a forest that he had never seen before. He found a small clearing where he collapse to tend his wounds. He’d keep moving soon…. Once he was feeling better… and then he’d be back… stronger. And then he’d kill Kali.
