Blossom wasn't sure exactly why she had chosen that particular story except that it was both familiar enough to settle her nerves and exciting enough to maybe please Synder who normally didn't enjoy such things. It seemed that she had made a pretty good choice though as Pembroke spoke up and she gave her brother a slight smile before turning her attention to trying to get comfortable.
It was certainly easier to do this now that they were in the old familiar grove but it still took her a few moments to really settle in and she had to get up and down and turn around a few times before she finally decided she was comfortable. Laying her head on her mothers side she sighed slightly. Surely once the story started she would be able to relax even further. "Okay." She finally told her mother "I'm ready."
Since the two younger foals seemed perfectly happy with the story choice Synder made herself as comfortable as possible so that she could listen to the story as well - it would probably be good for her to actually pay attention to the herd tale for once, it was an important part of the herds history and her father had often impressed on her that such things were important to know..though until this incident Synder hadn't put much thought towards why that was so.
Given the current circumstances however the older foal was starting to think it might be a good idea to actually make sure she knew the herds history - after all this attack had come with no warning and who was to say that something similar might not happen in the future? Everyone should know the herds story so that they could tell others if something terrible like this happened and the herd was otherwise lost. It was a dismal reason to learn your families history..but that didn't mean it wasn't an important one. "I'm ready too." She told the older mare.

Hearing that all three of the foals were ready to hear the story Whisper took a deep breath and began. "Well your father was about your age when it all happened, perhaps a bit older. He loved looking for bugs and other neat things around the meadow that he could learn about but rarely did he venture off alone to do this. Well one day he wandered off, we still don't know why he did this without telling anyone but he did. The meadow was his home after all and he knew it well enough to know where to go and where not to go. He made his way down to the stream, a place where he had played many times before, but always under the supervision of a herd member, but today he was along." She paused for a moment to glance between the three foals before continuing with the story. "Into the water he went, it wasn't deep where he entered but that didn't mean it was truly safe. At first everything was fine, he was playing and swimming in the water like he had done many times before, but before long he realized that the water was flowing faster than he had first realized and he was being swept down the stream. He hadn't told anyone that he was going to the river and he feared he may be swept far enough away that he would not be able to return." She paused once more to ensure they were all paying attention.
Pembroke flashed a smile at his sister before turning his attention back to his mother as the story began. He knew the story well and could, perhaps, tell it himself - though a few details may be missing or different. Just listening to his mothers voice was so relaxing, he let out a soft content sigh as he listened to the story.

Blossom's ears flicked slightly as she listened to her mothers voice, it was soothing and she was so very tired that before lone her eyelids began to droop slightly. She let them close, far to exhausted to try and fight the inevitable - besides she actually wanted to sleep. If she was asleep then she wouldn't have to face what was happening all around her and despite the tiny chance of it actually happening a part of her still hoped that when she woke up all of it would be over.
Lulled by her mothers voice, the rising and falling tones of the well known story and the scent of her brother and family around her Blossom finally drifted off to sleep, her tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically.
Synder listened to the story with an intensity that she never had before, it was a good story and she wondered briefly how she had never noticed before. Along with listening however the older foal kept her eyes on the younger foals, Pembroke was still awake but it looked like Blossom was on the verge of falling out.
Good.
The little foal needed her rest, even if she hadn't had a complete meltdown earlier it was important for foals her age to get enough sleep, if they didn't they could get sick - Lapin had certainly warned her about the dangers of not getting enough sleep often enough when she was younger that it was a danger she was willing to somewhat believe in. With Blossom asleep and Pembroke looking more and more relaxed Synder turned her attention back to the story.

"Though he tried to swim to the shore and get out of the water before it was too late the current was too strong and the water was too deep. But he kept trying, knowing he had to escape the water. Just when he was reaching the point where his body was too tired to keep fighting a pair of full sized Soquili stumbled upon him. They had been traveling and decided to take a short break and explore the land. Luck was certainly on Oloneric's side since their decision meant he would be saved."
Pembroke listened as the story progress. His eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier, but he didn't want to fall asleep, at least not until the story ended. He loved listening to stories, and this one was one of his favorites. His head bobbed for a moment and then came up, he tried to focus on the words of the story, words he knew very well, but his concentration was failing. Now that he was in a safe place, with his mother, sister and cousin, and with the soft calming voice of his mother he could only fight sleep for so long. But still he tried. He tried to hold out just a bit longer, the story was close to being done after all. Finally he reached the point where he couldn't fight it any more, his body and mind were ready for sleep. Pembroke's head slowly lowered down until his chin was resting on the ground, his breathing was slow and steady and before he knew it he was asleep.
Whisper paused in her story when she felt Pembroke lean a bit more on her. She watched as her son finally succumbed to sleep and a smile crossed her lips. Now there was one final foal left, though she wasn't sure if Synder would actually sleep or not. Either way she would finish her story. Turning her attention to Synder she continued. "Jarita and Eversong certainly hadn't been expecting to find a foal fighting for it's life in a stream when they landed, but that is exactly what happened. Eversong hurried into the stream and with only a little bit of effort he was able to pull Oloneric free from the water. But by then poor Oloneric was so tired he collapsed on the bank, he couldn't even talk he was that exhausted. Jarita and Eversong worried over the small colt but eventually with a little rest Oloneric was able to recover enough to stand and thank them for saving him. After a few questions the pair discovered that Oloneric lived not far away. Wanting to make sure the foal got home safely they followed Oloneric to the meadow and was quickly swept up into the herd. They were obviously very happy to hear they had saved Oloneric and were invited to stay the night. They accepted the offer and were able to get to know the herd a bit. Though they did leave for a while, Jarita and Eversong came to love this area and the herd, after all they had practically been adopted into the family after saving Oloneric, so they decided that they would live among the herd, and while they do occassionally leave to travel the lands, this has now become their home - all because of a small foal who was swept down the stream." She finished the story with a smile. Of course there was a second half to the story, the one where Eversong and Jarita finally got the family they were hoping for, but that was a story for another day.

Blossom wasn't aware of the story progressing around her, the little foal was thankfully caught up in the rest that she terribly needed and while one might think her dreams would be fraught with danger and frightening images the truth was quite a bit different, nestled between her mother, sibling and cousin Blossom felt safe and secure and her dreams led her down far happier path's.
In her dreams Blossom found herself prancing happily in the families meadow with her siblings, there was not a care in the world, the sky was blue, the air was warm and butterflies flitted here and there between the flower blossoms she, herself, was named for. It was a wonderful dream and it was a welcome relief from the horror of her current situation. It was too bad really that the little foal could not simply sleep through the entire ordeal.
Synder didn't think that she had even been so happy to see her playmates take a nap in her life, both of the younger foals needed their rest, both of them had been pushed well beyond their limits, even she was on the verge of yawning now and then as Whisper finished her story.
"I'm glad that they decided to stay here after saving Uncle Olo, I don't think the herd would be the same without them.." Synder told Whisper in a soft voice, of course remember the large Soquili made her glance in the direction they had been, of course she couldn't see anything from this sheltered grove but given the way things were going she wasn't sure she wanted to anyways. "I'm sure that things will be okay...somehow." She finally stated with a slight sigh before lowering her head and letting her own eyes drift shut.

"I agree." Whisper told Synder with a nod. She couldn't imagine the herd without Eversong and Jarita in it. They were part of this family now. She couldn't help but follow the foals gaze as she looked out towards the tree, trees that currently hid them from view of the guards but she knew they were out there and that they were watching. "Everything will be fine...I know it will be." She assured Synder and then watched as the older foal too finally fall asleep. Whisper too lowered her head, but she would remain awake, watchful over the foals and more so the guards who lurked not far away. It was good to know they had fallen asleep with little fuss and once these three had a good nap she would tend to the others, unless by chance they had taken to sleeping out in the meadow. It was possible, for when sleep called it was hard not to answer.
The foals had been asleep for quite some time and Whisper knew they couldn't spend all day sleeping, not if they wanted to remain in the good graces of their captors. As much as it pained her to do so she nudged each of the foals to rouse them. "It is time to get up." She said softly. They needed to get up, get some food in them and then return to where the others were. Then they would continue to wait until they were rescued.
Pembroke had had a wonderful nap. When his mother nudged him the colt let out a tiny snort, not quite wanting to get up quite yet. His legs stretched and he let out a yawn as his eyes cracked open. He closed his eyes again and let out a content sigh. He was well rested but that didn't mean he wanted to instantly jump into being awake. Another stretch and then he opened his eyes fully. His gaze swept over their little grove and eventually settled upon his mother beside him. He could see Blossom on the other side and his cousin Synder as well. "I'm hungry mama." Now that he had slept it was time to eat, it had been a while since they had eaten anything.

It was far to soon to wake up as far as Blossom was concerned and really it wasn't much that she was still tired - the nap had been more then sufficient to see to that - but that she didn't want to return to the reality they were now living in. "Can't we just stay here a bit longer?" She begged her mother as she cracked her eyes open. "I like it here, I don't ever want to leave." The little foal expressed though even she knew that was an unrealistic request.
Shaking her head slightly she stretched out her legs and with a long drawn out sigh pulled herself to her feet, hearing her brother mention food all other thoughts fled from blossom's mid as well. "I'm hungry too." She chimed in. "Can we stay here and eat before we go back?" She asked with a hopeful look in her eye
Synder was actually surprised when she found herself nudged awake from Whisper, she had not really intended to fall asleep so much as just rest her eyes but obviously she had needed her rest just as much as the others. "How long were we asleep?" She asked the older mare. What she really wanted to ask was if anything had happened, had they missed anything important? Of course she didn't want to ask that in front of the younger foals - not while they were still somewhat relaxed and focusing more on getting something to eat rather then on the bad things that might be happening elsewhere.
In any case she herself was a bit hungry and she realized with somewhat of a start that she hadn't really eaten anything since very early this morning. That was unusual but with the way the day had gone she supposed that it wasn't all that unusual.
