Hmmm...I think maybe having the first few seconds be the thorns would be best; forty five seconds of firing thorns could do a lot of damage, even if they are only doing a little damage at a time! So maybe for the first ten seconds of her attack, anywhere she aimed, some thorns would fly out? (Maybe if she fires about ten per second, that would be fair? She has a hundred chances to hit her targets--which is good since they would probably try to run after that first thorn!) Then, for the next 35 seconds, anyone who was struck by them would feel the stinging sensation?
Let me know if that is something like what you have in mind!
