He had plenty to say to the first part of that, the anger rising, a need to scathingly pour out on Kostya everything that he wouldn't on America. These hopes were derailed, however, by the rest of it, which earned another long, stoic-faced silence.

"It is not going to tear her in two to cool the ******** off for awhile. Would that it ******** did," he added with a sudden flair of bitterness. "Don't be histrionic."

Kostya scoffed in return. "Is not cooling off that I am vorry about."

America was lost, and he lacked the ability to truly express why and how. But he had more context now, at least, of the limits that Taym had wanted to impose upon her. It was as he'd thought, in some regards: Obadiah wanted to bottle her lightning, to catch the storm and press it inside walls. Kostya had assumed that had been the reason for not wanting her anymore-- but the truth was much sadder.

It meant that he recognized the flames, and wanted them to change to suit him.

"Ok, Mister Backslide."
