Jake stared back.
"It's not one I hear often, no."
He totally wasn't thinking... a literal chip nope.
Jake responded to Gale's smirk with a frown, and tried to even the playing field a bit with a charge. Even if he was going to lose, he wouldn't go down without a fight.
At least, that was his thought until Gale's attack made him stumble and lose his concentration, and the charge vanished. Drats.
"I'd say. We're screwed if we don't step up our game."
Though he was somewhat out of it during that fight, he had noted that the horsemen seemed... more bloodthirsty than usual, and the fact that even hunters fell prey to their corruption... it was a little worrying.
"Hey, wasn't your specialization something to do with horsemens? Has Caelius assigned you anything yet?"

There was a long pause in which Gale tried very studiously to look as though he were concentrating on the fight. He swung towards Jake and drove the butt of the gun into his side, or at least attempted to, before jumping backwards, pushing a few stray locks of hair out of his face. A sigh escaped past his lips.
"I was...demoted."

Part of him wondered if he had said something wrong, as Gale stayed silent. He didn't seem the type to be irked by things so easily, and was confused when the other death hunter seemed to be pushing him back with the strike. He hadn't even fired his gun once yet. Not that... he was complaining. Still, Jake took the opportunity to deliver a quick counter because, well, this was still a fight after all.
When Gale did speak, Jake's eyes were wide, and then he went silent.
"I... I'm sorry to hear that."

He gave Jake a wan smile, but in truth he was slightly surprised by his reaction. Gale had expected a snort of laughter, a sarcastic, "So who did you kill to get demoted" or something of the alike. But the astonishment and apologies on Jake's behalf was something different.
He really had changed for the better.
"It's fine," said Gale, trying to brush it off with a wave of his hand. "I pushed His Majesty too far. I knew it was useless, and I still did it, so it's really my own fault. I've just gotta learn when to keep my mouth shut and all."
Gale pushed the rifle around. "I'll get it back."

Perhaps a year ago, he would have done just that, and told him it was his own fault for getting demoted. But he knew better, and perhaps... he had changed for the better, though it wasn't something he'd likely admit. Besides, it was probably more like "who didn't he murder to get demoted. Caelius seemed rather impartial to the life of hunters. Everyone was considered disposable to him anyways.
Still, the shock of Gale's words prevented him from hitting back, and has distracted him enough that he left himself wide open, wincing as the blow hit his shield hard. It wasn't enough to shatter it, but at the rate this battle was going, it wasn't hard to see who the winner was. Of course, he could still keep pushing, but knowing his luck, he's probably end up getting himself knocked out from over-exerting himself, and he really didn't feel like gracing the infirmary with his presence.
"You're lucky he only demoted you and didn't try to, well, you know."
He sighed and desummoned his weapons, holding his hands up to show that the fight was over.

He desummoned Jinhai, who disappeared in a flash of white light, reappearing a second later as the silver banded ring on his left index finger. Jake had already desummoned his own weapon, and Gale gave him a small, slightly weary smile that clearly showed his unhappiness with having lost his specialization title.
"Yes, well," said Gale, and waved his blackened hand. "I suppose you're right, since I've already faced that side of him, as you can see. But..." He shook his head, sighing. "Same thing I always want, y'know? For him to actually recognize me as someone capable."
He gave a short, hollow laugh. "But it's stupid; he never will, except I keep trying to convince him. It's like trying to convince a tree it can fly."

Jake frowned, sympathizing with Gale.
Caelius, despite his "I'm better than all of you and all of you are just trash" demeanour, was a smart and formidable leader, and if it weren't for the fact that he'd probably decapitate you within the first 5 words that came out of your mouth as being "insignificant and a complete waste of his time", Jake probably wouldn't ask for any other leader. Probably.
"Hey, you never know. What we're doing kinda defies logic as is, so it's only a matter of time."
He had the nerve to grin, reaching out to ruffle Gale's hair.
"At least..." his voice grew quiet. "he didn't make someone else do it for him."
Shaking his head, he laughed, and let his hand drop to his side again.
"Well, enough of that. A deal's a deal. What would you like to eat?"kuroopu We can probs wrap this soon if you want! :>

He scowled slightly as Jake ruffled his hair, but let it go, because it was Jake and he was one of the only people that could possibly get away with it. Gale shoved his hands into the pockets of his pants and gave a small sigh, scuffing the tip of his boot into the grass.
"Good point," he said resignedly. "I suppose it was the best outcome I could hope for in that sort of situation. He didn't try to kill me for once, and he didn't take it out on anyone else, so I should be clicking my heels in excitement and in gratitude, right?"
The last part of his sentence was clearly said with a certain dose of sarcasm, Gale lifting his gaze to meet Jake's again, a smile playing at the corners of his lips.
