Hanna was distracted by her own laughter, shifting Adelphe at exactly the wrong moment. Her flirtatious partner lunged toward her, and her weapon was knocked from her hands, leaving her completely open to attack. The blow exhausted her Fear shield and felt pretty real. Wincing, Hanna stumbled backward, gripping Evan's shirt and somewhat pulling him down with her.

"This," she said, breathing hard, "was not my ideal why to be swept off my feet."

With two fingers, Hanna tapped the dirt. "So I'm out, my precious ego tarnished."

By the time Evan realized that Hanna was not braced for his attack, it was too late to do anything but mitigate the damage. He didn't resist as she pulled him down with her--only partly out of necessity--but was careful to keep his weight off of her. The impact on his knees and forearms was jarring, but didn't do him nearly as much damage as it would have done Hanna otherwise; it was worth it for that alone, to say nothing of the more obvious advantages.

"Sorry," he replied, frowning sheepishly. "I'll have to keep that in mind for next time." He gave Hanna a quick once over--as much as he could while still basically on top of her--but she didn't sound like she was in pain.

With great reluctance, Evan rolled off of Hanna and onto his feet. "Nah, you did really well," he commended, reaching down to offer her a hand up. "You're fast on your feet, you're creative, you're a quick learner--you'll get there. Practice makes perfect," he soothed.

Hanna dusted her hands off on her pants and then grabbed Evan's hand, letting him help her to her feet. "Thanks," she said, with the hint of a sigh in her words. "Though I do feel like my battle banter just increased by 5 experience points, or something." Losing so fast could really tire a girl out, not to mention that she was hungry, not to mention that Evan was cute or whatever so she felt weirdly self-conscious about the whole flirtation moments ago. In the battle, it rolled out of her alongside sweat and adrenaline. Outside of it, now she had to think about her words with a clear head, sort of like waking up after a night of drinking and retracing the events of the night with a cringe.

"I have reached my a**-kicking quota for the day, time to eat," she said, hooking her thumb back in the direction of the barracks. "You staying here or moving that way?"

Evan huffed a chuckle as Hanna managed to find the bright side of losing their spar. "That's equally important," he agreed, nodding with mock seriousness. "Any advantage you can get, right? You could definitely distract someone with your dazzling wit." Though she hardly needed it; he imagined that once she had some more experience under her belt, she'd be the one picking him up off the ground.

"I could eat," Evan said, smiling down at Hanna. "Could make you something, too, if you want." Making a consolation meal for his sparring partners seemed to be a trend, and Evan saw no reason not to offer. More than fighting together--more, even, than casual flirtation--sharing a meal was a surefire way to get to know the people he worked with better.

And he was hungry, but he was always hungry.

Hanna was very skilled at finding excuses for her failure, Evan. Very skilled. Plus, it helped that Evan made losing feel so simple. Sometimes, Hanna got down on herself, especially when she lost to people with less experience to her. But Evan had managed to make it fun? Question mark? The mere fact that she was feeling so upbeat about a loss was confusing to the Death trainee, but it was a good feeling and she wasn’t always chock full of those, so.

A grin cocked in the corner of her mouth, eyes bright. “God, I was waiting for you to finally regain your place in the kitchen, barefoot,” she said. Hanna laughed, a bark. “Which is my very classy way of saying — yes, that would be lovely, if you don’t mind. I’m not much of a cook, but I am very skilled at cutting larger things into smaller pieces and handing things to people.” She gave him a little salute, because it felt right, and then picked a few pieces of grass from her shirt.

Hanna managed to startle a laugh out of Evan. She was turning out to be a better and better idea with each passing moment, her wry sense of humor another point in her favor. She was a welcome and refreshing change from most other people he knew, neither too serious and sullen nor too fragile and excitable.

"Barefoot I can do, pregnant not so much. I do make a good apple pie, though, if you're willing to put up with me a little while longer." It may have just been a ploy to get her to put up with him a little longer, but who could say no to pie for lunch?

Gathering up her things, Hanna walked with Evan in the direction of the kitchen, rubbing some tension out of her bicep. "In the name of apple pie, I can do anything," she said.

And so they did.

Sorry I left this hanging forever. I slapped a fade-to-blackesque wrap post on it, if that works for you.
