Raemos had explored and patrolled but apparently they hadn't been out. Hmm. “Well.” clearly she was prepared. “Good, then.”

When they returned to the farm, Raemos excused himself to find his old, well-loved copy of Fauna of Magesc. He flipped through the pages as he returned to Sueno.

“The Olrawk feeds upon fish, live small creatures, and will occasionally deign to sup on seeds.” he read aloud as he approached. It was an old edition, but he had checked it against the newer version in the library and there was something about scrawling notes and updates in it's pages that felt... authentic. Perhaps devaluing it as an object, but he felt his book, old and archaic as it was, had character. He closed it to keep the pages safe from the humid air.

“I was unaware that they could be trained as couriers...” he said, observing it.

the fae hid from you :p

Sueno, when Raemos went to grab his book, took the bird to the small building she called a coop. It was not a real coop; those were small and usually for lyru or uruu's to nest in. This was an old barn re-purposed for her use in non-violent animals. Which meant her faes and Videe for now, most of whom were nesting in the rafters. Soft cheeps and some shrill whistles greeted her as she entered.
She smiled up at them and walked over to the fenced off area. Opening the door she let the olrawk loose inside it before quickly closing the door. Mourlor, the largest of her faes and a deep brown and red color, hopped down and coasted over to land on Sueno's back, his tail twinning about her waist and small claws gripping her shirt as he growled curiously at the new creature.

"That's an olrawk. Ye all be good and make friends."
She said as she scratched his head. The faes all hissed when Raemos entered, though they didn't attack or hide.

"Fish and small critters? That's easy... Got the river right there so Ah'll go fishing in mornings and evenings and feed it that. Pa'll be happy to help there too..." Couriers? That would be something nice to attempt to train it as... though she'd have to ask for help since she didn't know how to train a courier bird.

"Let's get it calmed down and used to us before we start training...Ah'll ask the farmers about if they've got any ideas for courier training... if not then Ah'll think of something."

Over the next few days she stopped by in the mornings and evenings to let loose either a bouken (yay for the ranch hands nearby and their willingness to catch animals for her) for it to hunt and eat or a plate of fish. The faes were jealous of the attention she gave it, though since they got extra pets and cuddles when the Olrawk ignored Sueno it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Using her magics, she was able to keep the animal calm around her though she wasn't willing to attempt feeding it by hand yet. At least it didn't sit and hiss at her when she was in its cage anymore! And having the faes (and Videe though he ignored the olrawk) around was helping; she could see that. The casual way they crawled over her, demanded attention and were generally calm seemed to make the olrawk less wary.

Raemos, while patrolling and guarding the girl over the days, watched the progress of the training with interest. The Olrawk seemed to calm over the days, especially – though he couldn't imagine why – when he was nearby. Twice more, he had heard it singing to him as he passed, and he found himself passing by on his patrols more frequently than logic would have dictated.

Now that he could see the Fae's, he decided that – aside from their unique appearance – he hadn't missed very much when he hadn't seen them. They were dragons – all of the arrogance and ferocity stuffed into a little package. Something Vona or his parents might want, but not for him.

No.

He desired an Olrawk and its glorious song. So he watched what Sueno did, and learned.

He was watching it one day when he had an idea. “Sueno...” he said, “I may know a way to start training it to carry messages.” He had no idea if she had a better one, but he had one, and that was a start.

It is tamed now... so Step #3!!
Rolled 78: success!
Sueno really doesn't think a fighter's good for anything other than fighting :p

Sueno had gotten a few bits of advice from Fillarin, her ranching teacher, but he worked mostly with hastars or farm animals so he too was at a loss. At least, she thought with a smile, the olrawk likes me now! It only sang when Raemos was nearby... which sucked.... but it had finally accepted head scratches from her, which made up for it.

She raised and eyebrow and looked at Raemos; "Oh? What's yer idea?" Maybe a fighter would know something... though she doubted he'd be of much use. She was thinking of using her fae's and having them be models for what she wanted the olrawk to do, giving rewards for when the olrawk did something she wanted it to...

“Well, a good first step would be to acclimitize it” A Big word, yes, he knew - “To carrying something, either in its talons or strapped to its leg.” That made sense. That was a first step to training a kugel for baggage, if they were tame and willing to be handled already, which most on his ranch were – get them used to something like what they would be doing so that they wouldn't try to shake it off.

“Then, you train it to go to a person in the house, then a person further away, reinforcing...” And yet another big word. Raemos liked them. “With treats.”

He looked at Sueno. “What about you? Any ideas to add?”

Guess he's got some knowledge of training, she thought when Raemos put forward a good idea. Big words too.. what's wrong with simpler words? Ismene was like that....Guess it comes from reading a lot?

"That's how Ah trained Gazini... Ah was also gonna use mah fae's as examples. Like have them deliver stuff while it watches and reward them... that way it see's that there is a reward for what Ah'm asking."

“Oh!” he said, not entirely surprised that she knew what she was doing. Of course: The girl planned on doing this for her career. She had to know her stuff. “A combination of the two methods would work well.” He stared at the fae dragons with misgiving. “How can I be of service, Miss Sueno?” he asked.

He was intrigued now, and hoped that she would allow him to assist.

She wanted to say no, being around him was too weird. But the bird liked to sing near him… And appeared calmer around him in fact. She was beginning to think that the legends of them warning the Orderites were scams now: the birds just liked the Oblivinites apparently! And only warned of their presence on accident.

So she handed Raemos a bag of full of dried strips of meat. “Go over to that side of the barn. We’ll start off slowly with me having one of mine delivering something to you and you feed it. Lolak is the one we’ll use fer now. The other mostly trained ones are with Ma and Pa right now.” Lolak, hearing his name perked up and cheeped inquisitively. He was a shimmering white with pale icy blue wings and was the calmest of the bunch. She drew “:p” on a piece of paper, rolled it up and beckoned for Lolak. He gave a chirp and flapped down to land on her lap, holding out a leg for it to b tied too.

“Lolak won’t bite ye,” She told Raemos, “but Mourlor, the big brown and red one, will iffn he sees the treats and isna fed some. Just so ye know.”

They needed to let the Olrawk see that tasks were rewarded with treats. Bribes always worked

Raemos accepted the meat and bowed gravely – perhaps a little exaggeratedly, but someone had to be decorous.

In the middle of a barn.

Or, rather, on the other side of the barn. Raemos, happy to do his duty, stood in his assigned spot and waited, glancing warily at the reddish 'fae' dragon, named Mourlor apparently.

I'll have to watch out for you... he thought, checking to make sure his gloves were on securely: he was sure that they would be seeing some action soon, from sharp little teeth and claws.

~~~
The Olrawk, for its part, was intrigued. The meat bag was not new, but the two leggers were doing odd things, and the strange companions that it had found to be tolerable were also doing odd things. It couldn't be anything too bad, though: it was hard for the beast to believe so with such a soothing emptiness nearby. It watched Raemos as he moved and opened its beak, letting loose with a warbling, almost flirtacious song.
Don't go... it seemed to say, and it – consequently – seemed relieved when Raemos stopped at the other side of the barn, instead of leaving it with the twoleg that fed it...
~~~

Oh... that song... Raemos wondered if maybe message-running was the best job for such a glorious animal, if maybe its remarkable talents were wasted in this.

But, it was Sueno's bird, and his job was to assist her with training it. He could watch, and then find his own Olrawk later.

“I am...” he had to take a moment to regain his focus after the Olrawk's song, “In position, Miss Sueno.”

Sueno gave a small pout as the critter once again gave that beautiful song... to Raemos. Go bite him, she thought hard at Mourlor, not that he'd hear her of course.

"Okay. Lolak, deliver to Raemos." She gave the command and pointed in the direction he was to go. Lolak, knowing the drill gave a cheep and swooped over gracefully to land on Raemos's head. He stuck his leg out that had the message tube tied to it and gave a more demanding chirp.

She wished she could train the Olrawk to sing at any time.. but all she'd read, and heard form others, was that they only sang if an Oblivionite was near. So unless she wanted to stick around Oblivionites (Ew, no!) she'd just have to get used to not hearing the lovely song. But it was flying, and once it got used to taking directions from her, she could use it instead of relying upon her fads which could get distracted on the return trip.... She was also thinking of trying to train it to help her hunt... but that would be more for someone who actually hunted. Since she preferred to use traps to go hunting. Less danger that way!

Resigned, Raemos closed his eyes as the Fae's claws dug into his thick hair. “I think you are supposed to land on my arm.” he commented as he tried to work the message tube off, “That would be the appropriate place.”

He unwound the paper, rewound the paper, put it back in the case, and put it back on the dragon: repetition was key. “Go forth.” he said, gesturing to the Fae to return to it's master...

Time skip blurb so we can end this and I can toss Sueno into her plots I've had in mind for a while. We cna end this here if you want...

Lolak launched himself off of Raemos's head with the message to return to Sueno to receive pets and treats.

This she repeated once more before letting Lolak go and grabbing a different Fae to demonstrate other tasks. Mostly coming when called, picking up items... simple tasks that were rewarded.

The first day was merely showing the Olrawk that following orders would end in treats. In fact, that was the first week; demonstrate and then attempt!
The second week she spent attempting to get the Olrawk to like her more... she was rather jealous it got along better with Raemos, but after getting used to her presence (and a lot of bribery) it began to come when she called. Once that behavior was reinforced, she began the process of teaching it, using her fae's as demonstrations until it began to copy their behaviors.
