Irridian gave a pleased dive-twist, resurfacing before the Kelpi mare with a grin and a toss of his mane. "Why I thank you deeply for the compliment, for I am most flattered that you noticed. I am sure that your skills are not unremarkable, so for you to pay me a compliment is flattering indeed."
At her mention of meeting those that live in this land, he glanced toward the shore once again. He certainly lacked her ability to travel inland and make friends, though perhaps there was an inlet or a river he could travel down, it was something worth exploring at a future date in any case. "I think it would be most interesting to speak to some of them, it must be quite interesting to see the land from the air, for example."
He smiled at her laughter, dipping his muzzle just beneath the surface of the waves to blow a stream of bubbles. "I will make you a counter-offer, oh lovely Sahaena. If you make any friends of interest on land, I would very dearly like to meet them. So then, if you can talk one of your legged friends into wading in the ocean for awhile, I will trade them a shell and the friendship of a Mer in exchange for their troubles."
He laughed at her smile. "That sounds fair indeed."

"You are most welcome, from the bottom of my heart. And please know I meant every word." She shifted a bit to adjust and avoid the brunt of the next incoming wave.
When Irridian looked past her to the shore, she followed his glance to land. With the rapidly flowing tide, she mentally noted that with the inflowing tide she would be better off retreating to land. Besides, she was getting hungry and she certainly didn't want to keep her new friend too long. "So I shall put a winged Soquili on my list of those I should meet and greet, and we can trade stories from under the ocean for those from above the ground. That way, everyone wins, hmm?"
The bubble stream made her laugh, shaking her head fondly at him. "I accept your counter-offer gladly, Irridian. Consider it a deal then, when I find someone interesting enough to befriend, they shall find themselves with two aquatic associations instead of one. And be all the more fortunate for us both."
Her smile softened, and she waited until he circled back around in front of her. "Though this has been a fine meeting, I think it best to bid you farewell for now. I have kept you long enough, and must be seeking something to eat myself. I trust I will see you soon, Irridian?"

"Of that I am most sure, yes." He agreed easily enough, and noted that the inflowing tide was making things more difficult for her, though it didn't seem to trouble her too deeply and her light remark made him laugh. "I think that would work quite well for all of us involved, to trade sea stories for sky stories. It would certainly ensure that we all received a much more well-rounded outlook than that which we already arrived with."
He grinned at her laughter and her bright-golden eyes, and inclined his head faintly. "Good, then the deal is struck, you may say. As soon as you make a friends with one of those interesting land-walkers, winged or otherwise, you'll enrich all our lives by inviting them to the ocean to meet your Mer-friend. With a little luck and some careful timing, we'll all leave wiser than when we arrived.. And lighter-hearted."
He sighed softly at her remark, and nodded in understanding. "Yes, it appears the tide is making itself something of a nuisance, and if instincts are correct a storm is rolling in. It would be best for you to be elsewhere when it made landfall, as I would hate to lose my new friend to an unkind wave. As for seeing me soon, I challenge you to try to avoid me. It will be a sincere pleasure to visit the coast and know my friend is waiting for me."

"I look forward to the chance for us to exchange such stories then." She agreed with a slightly more-subdued smile. "Let us hope the opportunity presents itself soon, and that you have interesting tales to spin when it does arise. Not that I doubt you, of course."
She nodded faintly, mutely agreeing with his words.
"If you are sure of the storm, then I think it is indeed time for me to take my leave. I do not wish to be caught out here to test my strength against a storm-tossed sea. I trust you will be well until our next meeting, and that it is not too far off?"
With a final fond glance she moved toward the coast. "I hope to see you soon, Irridian. Until then, may the waves hold you and keep you well."

Irridian smiled as he watched his new friend retreat to the safety of the coast. As it stood, he would have to swim quickly to reach the cave at depths that the storm would not reach. When the crimson mare reached safety, he gave a faint nod and then turned back to the sea. "Be safe, my new friend. Until we meet again."
And with that the Mer dove deep, swimming quickly to safety in the face of the arriving storm. He would see Sahaena soon enough, of that much he was sure.
It was good to have a friend.
